I was a student of Joe's. I also did some drum exhibitions with Joe, Ed Shauhnessy and Louie Bellson. I do not know John Riley, but I respect him so much--just from this video alone. He is gracious to the gentleman, and John is not showing off, but really breaking it down and educating here. I am a drumming instructor, and I applaud John. Bravo, John. Superb job.
oh man, these videos are great! Thanks alot, been studying the the full stroke etc concept for a while and this is a new chapter. John Riley is great, cracks me up. Thanks again!
Excellent explanation John! I explain it the same way in my lessons ! I learned it from Joe and Dom. Both excellent! Freestrokes in the fullstroke position. I also add the fullstroke position B (also known a fullstroke exercise) in my lessons!! Awesome!
8:23, John uses most of the terms that were taught to him by Joe as they relate to this series of strokes, and were taught to me and every other student of Joe's: FULL, down, tap, up, and yes, there is the half stroke as well, though not mentioned in this clip. If standard terminology matters (and I still don't think it does), then let's call it what Joe and John called it: a FULL STROKE.
Actually I disagree that it does not matter what it is called. It does. It would be like saying your name does not matter. It is important that we standardize terminology. He is teaching the Freestroke in the Fullstroke position, because there is also a halfstroke and lowstroke position as well. It is important to keep the terminology separate or else it causes confusion. The "Freestroke" was originally developed by Billy Gladstone, and yes I also studied with Joe, Jim Chapin and Dom Famularo.
SquarePants SpongeBob sorry for the late response. there is no difference. The exercise is based on Sanford Moeller exercises. both Chapin and Morello ( who taught Riley) studied with Moeller.
Christopher Angeletti Thanks for your answer, bro. I happened to have read the blue books written by Chapin, and wondered the same names mentioned in this video that time. Appreciate it that your response make it clear (handshake
I don't know about that. Seems like you're hyper/over sensitive. If I was that guy, I'd want exactly that kind of feedback to help me improve. Grow some skin.
Well, it actually doesn't matter what it's called as long as the student understands the concept and is able to use it to their benefit. @angelettidrummer and MrJohnnyNitro. Your assumption is that I have never taught or taken a lesson in my life? I took 3 years of lessons with Mr. Morello, and they're called FULL STROKES. Maybe someone should ask Mr. Riley.
HA HA THIS IS LIKE TALKING TO A WALL .ALL A WASTE OF TIME THIS IS HOW I SEE IT FROM PLAYING WITH SINATRA THE BUDDY RICH BAND LIONEL HAMPTION AND THE COPA NY BIG BAND WITH SAMMY DAVIS JR ......YOU PLAY OR YOU CAN,T PLAY YOU CANT LEARN IT, YOU MUST BE BORN WITH IT, ASK ANY REAL PRO
I agree. But it's good a service be provided for those who don't have the "x" factor, and need school to learn how to play drums. Some of us are fortunate to be born with it. Good for them.
This is probably the most valuable single, short drum lesson video on the entire internet.

My pleasure :) ( shakes hand back)
This is like he is making stuff up as he talks with the stuttering.Riley being a pro drummer would be more prepared for the event.
This man is a "Ghost note" buster, how many times does John have to point out the man's sticking was sub par, sit down already.

Sorry, this is a freestroke.
