    What’s great about the visually impaired RUclips channels is to scroll through the comments and (Despite having to root through the normal amount of ignorance just plain rude/dumb questions) every now and then finding a comment from someone who suddenly realizes that a visually impaired person is capable of living a “normal” life, or that we don’t all “look blind” etc. That one person who suddenly “gets it” makes it all worth it.

      Thank You for being honest. We don't fit the stereo type of being Visually Impaired. What does a visually impaired person look like? Maybe clothes that don't match
      or.............
      Messy hair and teeth that aren't brushed. Or no deodorant.

      Jacqueline Smith-Jackson I know! I’m partially sighted and I have some vision, so I’m fairly independent and at least in my younger days, was reasonably attractive so I would get the ” you don’t look blind” pretty much every day.

      Rachael Apter it’s definitely tough to break out of that shyness at first. I still have quite a bit of social anxiety but with being able to accept my disability it’s gotten to be not so overwhelming. My last biggest personal barrier for me was using a cane and a phone at the same time and being judged for it.

    • @rachaelapter4671
      @rachaelapter4671 5 лет назад +1

      JC5 Productions Thank you! I still have a lot of social anxiety about that, too. I don’t use my cane as often as I should because of it. However, I’m trying really hard to accept my disability and to stop caring about what anyone thinks and do what’s best for me. That’s awesome that you were able to break that barrier!!

    • @JuanAlcazar
      @JuanAlcazar 5 лет назад +1

      Rachael Apter I actually used the cane as a way of helping me get out of my social anxiety. Or in my case getting it under control better. O&M training did me a lot of good and it’s my being able to travel and get around that’s made me improve myself. I’m hoping you’ll be able to improve as well. Don’t let the opinions of others or their perceived opinions keep you from using your cane. Always remember that you’re using it for you and you alone. Wishing you the best of luck 🙂👍

    I am so so pleased I came across you guys. I have only recently (June 2018) been registered as partially sighted and more recently as blind... and much of what you both said on this video rings so so true for me. I used to put my walking into things and tripping as me being clumsy - people used to laugh at me being so clumsy etc - and that suited me fine. Coming to terms with my blindness has been tricky, and still is - but I am getting more confident about it and realising it really isn't the end of the world - and that because of people like You Kayla and Juan...thank you so much

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. It definitely is a process accepting your vision impairment and becoming more comfortable to not hide it. I think most of us have experienced that. I’m glad you found us and were able to relate. Good luck with the rest of your journey of becoming more comfortable with it, and remember every little bit of progress counts

LOL, not making fun of you but rather just laughing with you. Trust me, I have equally as embarrassing stories that I could tell you. It’s just funny because I would’ve done the exact same thing. Thanks for sharing your stories. I look forward to working with you in the next few months as well! Have a great day, talk to you soon. Matt

    Cayla, I sent you some tweets but I'll say it here too. I'd really love to do an interview with you for your channel because your being embarrassed is so alien to me. I had access to fellow blinks from age 2 and, as it turns out, it really helped me be confident early on in the things that are wrong with me. I'd love to pick your brain and give you the good advice that I apparently have for this situation (and I think it'd be good for struggling blinks who didn't have access like I was fortunate enough to.)
    I've never felt my problems were embarrassing. They're just... an annoying part of me. For anyone who reads this who might be embarrassed by their disabilities, don't be. Life sucks for everyone. It's just a little more noticeable for us. Take pride in every little achievement you acquire in a given day because it's one you didn't have prior. Life may suck for everyone but life is all about those moments when it doesn't suck. So strive for those.

    • @CaylawithaC

      I think it would be interesting to do an interview. I’m not sure if I would have time though. I’m so busy with grad school. This collab was months in the making, and quite stressful to get done

      @JuanAlcazar 5 лет назад +1

      Ryan that’s a good way of putting it. I always say that disability may be life altering but it’s not life ending. The shyness is definitely a barrier and was even more for me since I also have social anxiety. It’s gotten a lot better though and a huge part is due to me being more accepting of my disability.

    • @MaxAngor
      @MaxAngor 5 лет назад +1

      @@JuanAlcazar We are who we are. It's as simple as that. Denying who we are in any capacity is a recipe for disaster. That said, we should always seek to improve who we are. For VI, it's learning those tricks we use. For social anxiety, it's what you said, just getting out there. Life is all about making improvements in our bodies and psyches and making connections with others. It's not grandiose but it's true.

    • @JuanAlcazar
      @JuanAlcazar 5 лет назад +1

      Ryan agreed. It’s interesting how many times the best improvements come from doing the simple things. It’s just easy to overlook the simple things sometimes. Very well said on your part though.
