Infantry as a whole needs a hard buff, it's not just state troops. Which is really sad because core infantry is what defines Warhammer Fantasy in my opinion. Knights and big fancy monsters are nice in between, but it's the infantry battle line that really makes an army impressive to look at and it's what got me into playing Warhammer in the first place.
I agree with you full heardtly. If Infantry could be Step-Up to replace casualties so that all Models in the Front Rank could fight would be a gratis deal

I feel the Battalion Box would have been better if, instead of a Steam Tank, you get 8 knights and 1 cannon. It would have been more balanced, worth more points and you can get two boxes of this and have that be the center of most Empire forces.

For the guys without shoes I put a bit of greenstuff on and paint them as shoes. Another complaint about the state troops, from a painting perspective, is all the greebles they have. Bones, hour glasses, papers, they should have been on the sprue. It can be exhausting painting all those tiny details on every single model, but then again I'm doing it to myself as I'm trying to paint higher than a tabletop standard.
I would have been happier if instead of a steam tank they gave us some cav. However in fairness I play other rule sets where state troops infantry isn't all that bad. The milita kit is what I used to use for PCs in TTRPG. It is 100% best empire kit ever made
Up until the first whispers of "The Old World" came out, Empire Knight boxes (with 8 knights) were going for as much as $500 on Ebay if they were still sealed and the box in pristine condition. It was understandable. That box of knights was one of the best deals to get yourself lots of knights back a decade ago. I found one of those boxes in a out-of-the-way game store, still for it's original price Couldn't believe how lucky I was. Used those guys, with the skull faces from the chaos troops, to make a regiment of the Black Guard of Morr.
I think there’s a possibility to get the list up to about 1,500 but it’s a stretch and requires two of the state troops getting promoted to general and captain… the troops can be run as veterans and then kit them all out… however there is no way to cast magic in the box and that’s where the chaos one wins… having a sorcerer on a chariot beats this boxset every time sadly
@ I’m going with tiger jungle camo pants and dark Prussian blue armor for my Kasrkins a blend of NATO tri-color camo/ German Ambush Camo for armor, and I picked up some slouch hat heads for my Catachan mechanized infantry.
They made Pistoliers good in the form of a different troop type. They also made a good version of Greatswords. However, for the most part they really did a poor job of trying to make empire good. They basically made two neat armies unplayable because they don’t allow them to use wizards
Im not even gonna do an empire army anytime soon. And I STILL want to buy a box of miltiia. Just kitbashing zombies for my vampire coutns, unit filler parts, whatever. I love it.
When I saw Games Workshop was getting ready to launch the Empire of Man for the Old World, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I was anticipating their release even more than the Dwarves.
The biggest problem with the box is how ugly are the 7th ed state troops. It's not even a problem of them being too old, they were ugly as sin from the day they were released.

As someone who's painted more than their fill of state troopers the Battalion box doesn't really excite me. all of the weird special models like war wagon, ogre, Teutogen Guard etc. alongside the militia kit, however, interest me greatly. I'll probably buy and paint them unit by unit though.

Makes sense for them not to have shoes plenty of soldiers in real life went to battle without shoes just take a look at the confederate army before gettysburg.
For militia or free company maybe but the state troops are supposed to be professionals. Not a big deal.. sand the toes a bit and just paint them as boots, easy.
its not a good expansion for current players but its nearly perfect for new players to get into empire or the hobby/game in general. just a shame theres no characters in there?
GW is not going to focus on Empire infantry. There are far too many superior and cheaper historical minis available, they've allready lost that competition. So they create the rules to make you buy steamtanks and demigriffs and other trademarked miniatures. The community should just make their own rules for infantry heavy armies.
Why the shade towards spearmen? Is that just esthetic/lore bias? Because then I agree. Halberds✔️. I only ask because I have 50 swordsmen that need to be rebuilt as something less useless haha

Honestly, TOW is just generating more badwill with me at this juncture, I've started to call it anti-warhammer The core rules are so bad it is tragic and the new empire character doesn't even look like a warhammer figure anymore, more like something out of WoW. TOW sucks, 8th ed is king!

Yay Empire...Im actually gonna do an ancient Rome style Empire army. Gonna have to get creative about all the gunpowder units haha

I really would have wished that GW would re-release the old plastic kits for the State Troops from the 5th/6th Edition.
Agree regarding the Empire Militia kit (originally the Mordheim Human Mercenaries) is the best plastic kit GW has ever done.

PSA for any new Empire players: STank, Knightsx8, Archersx10, Artillery (2xCannons minimum + Helblaster), 2 Engineers, Lvl 4 wizard
A unit of knights instead would be a massively better start. Might be fun to convert the guys to great swords or flagellants or something

They are already available as part of the Cities of Sigmar range, though you'd need to replace the round bases.
