    Just for your info, Greenwich is not outside London it is in central London where the big dome sits.... it is where the observatory is also located (so they can't see much now thanks to all the lights) and the Merridian line which designates 0 degree's and the GMT time zone. Obviously back in the day every town and city ran their own clocks and were all out of synchronization and so we fixed that issue and simultaneously put our self at the centre of the world. I have to say I am not a big fan of these world timers, though I did see a Patek World Time in the flesh the other week and it looked better than the photo's... to me I just find them a bit cluttered looking though and I don't think I would get much utility (when I used to travel I wore an Omega which had an hour hand that would jump an hour at a time when you set it so the minutes remained unchanged and I would always know the time back home just from remembering the time difference. They are an interesting complication though, especially the ones with the pusher. Regards...

      My bad. I didn't realize that Greenwich is a borough of London. The Bronx of London! My son who lived in Brixton for several years while at LSE and Goldsmiths took me there and it seemed like a long way out of London, but now I know better. In any event, I went to the Greenwich Museum, and enjoyed it. World Timers are a trip...I had to add the Nomos (love it!) and the A. Lange .... will take a while to grow on me, but it is intriguing. Take care man, and thanks for straightening me out on Greenwich. Kindest regards, Bill

    • @Daveyboyz1978
      @Daveyboyz1978 6 лет назад +2

      Hardly the Bronx it is quite upmarket really and very expensive since its a stones throw from Docklands (Canary Wharf office district) Worth noting unlike in the states where the rich and poor seem to try and keep far away from each other, here we have expensive mansions over the road from council estates and the area's of London are good/bad scattered almost randomly, which means you can be in a nice area one moment and walk down a side street and find yourself in a ghetto. Also Brixton is also in London, but London is so big that it probably felt that way... I mean I went to Paris and felt like I was in a small village (its about 10% the size of London) and to drive around the London ring road (M25) is 118 miles Keep doing what you're doing Bill. Thanks for the good content.

    Unfortunately, you explained the functions of some of the watches wrong: The maps on the MB and the JLC are not for decoration, they correspond to the cities and therefor are projections form the North Pole. For the same reason you cannot set a reference city, London is always at 6 o clock. The map on the MB has a rotating overlay that actually darkens the map where is is night, which is super cool. The red and blue markings on the JLC is not about hemisphere but about + and - time zones and therefor about the date line. The Chopard and the JLC are the only Worldtimers shown that are really useful, because they have the markings for DST, which would otherwise mess up all readings. Breitling‘s worldtimer are also very well designed.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад +2

      Hey Martin, thanks for those clarifications. I just took them from a naive user's view point in terms of what I'd actually use when doing world travel. Kindest regards, Bill

    • @mrk131324
      @mrk131324 6 лет назад +1

      WatchArtSci Thanks for doing this list! I did research the available worldtimer last year, too. It’s a tricky complication that’s hard to get right (if it should really work and not just look good) because time zones are much more complicated then you think. From the watches shown the MB is coolest and the JLC the most functional. The VC looks best and the Patek is just a joke.
      Another strong contender is the Glasshütte Original Senator as it handles both DST and half hour time zones in a mechanical way.
      But in reality if have found that the watch I really use for worldtime purpose is a Vulcain Aviator. It has a city ring ring with 24h hour chapter ring and DST markings as a passive inner rotating bezel. No fancy mechanics at all, you have to turn it yourself. But you can use it for any time you want, not just your current time, so e.g. you want to schedule a conference call for tomorrow 2pm local - this watch will tell you date and time of all participants.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад

      Hey Martin! Thanks again man! That additional information is very helpful, and I have to tell you-I'm a sucker for Vulcain! I was not aware that the Aviator was a world timer. Ever since my wife confiscated my Louis Vuitton Time Zone (...she does wear it better) I've been using my new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Hémisphères for a world timer even thought it's probably a GMT with d/n and date indicators. Is shopwornwatches on eBay any good? There's a Bovet being auctioned off there. It seems like this seller puts a bunch of watches on auction and see how it goes.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад +1

      Hi LD4. When dealing with dealers who post on Ebay, I always go to directly to the dealer's home site. If you go to shopworn.com instead of through Ebay, you have a better chance of finding out about the dealer. In the case of the Bovet, the Ebay bid is $5,900 right now, and the asking price at Shopworn.com is $26,900 on a watch priced originally at $46,000. On Ebay, I could enter a last second bid of $8,000 (for instance) and possibly get the watch. Since I've dealt with Shopworn before and know them (all positive), I wouldn't worry about getting screwed and have an incredible deal! Don't worry about the motive of the dealer: they're all in business to make money and clear inventory. In that process, think about YOU. From your knowledge, is that a good buy or not? Remember, if it's a good enough deal, there's always Ramen noodles on the menu for a year or so... Cheers, bill

    Bill - I know little about what constitutes a "true" world-time movement. It would have been great if you could have covered this. I've heard many watches use GMT movements to mask as a world-time. Also - how are the 2892 and 2893 movements different than an in-house movement that is built as a real world-timer. I presume the ETA movements are using modular builds. Perhaps you can do a show on this sometime.

      I own the 4810 Orbis Terrarum. The map on this watch is unique in that it is 2 separate sapphire disks. The top disc is the cutout of the earth as viewed from the northern hemisphere. The underneath disc rotates under the top disc to show you night/day throughout the northern hemisphere. I love this watch! The pusher is also very useful when you travel, as you can move the reference city to where you travel to the 6 o’clock position.

    Great video Bill! One piece I would have loved to see you talk about is the ALS Lange1 Time Zone. This one is an absolute stunner and I've been thinking about getting a used one in platinum. My only gripe is that you can't really properly adjust it for day light savings time without other cities in the ring showing the incorrect time. Would that put you off pulling the plug on a purchase (given the hefty price) or something you could live with. Is this an issue with all world time watches?

      Hi Alex, thanks man! I really dropped the ball on German WT watches. I had planned to include Nomos as well, and I just forgot, and somehow I missed the A. Lange & Söhne Time Zone. I did check out the Habring2 World Time, but they quit making them, and GO had some dual timers but no WT. I should squeeze in both Sunday. There are different ways the watchmakers deal DLST. Some have indications like *___Bloomfield or s___Bloomfield. That and the 1/2 hour offsets like Iran and India are all handled in awkward ways. Sometimes it's just best to use an app in your mobile phone... Cheers, Bill

    I'm looking into the Dewitt Academia Hora Mundi Dual Time LE Automatic, NAC.HMI.001.RFB. But only found it new, without tags (shopworn). Was thinking it's a great price for Haute Horology? List $11,000, sale $4,600. Or a better choice for that price? And once again: GREAT AND INFORMATIVE video.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад

      John, here's the problem: that particular Dewitt is running on an ETA 2892 and that would land you in Standard Horology at 4x what you could get a watch with a rubber band and an ETA 2892 in it. However, you've discovered "Shopworn.com" it looks like. For the same amount of money, you can get a Condition 0 Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa Grande /XL . (They're high horology but not world timers.) Those Kalpas have a big 22k gold rotor. I saw 3 still available. One is like mine in blue (with a deployment strap) and the other two in more neutral colors. Offer $4k for any one of them, and you'll probably be able to get it. (Also, you'll get a gator strap instead of a rubber one.) Any one of those is Haute Horlogerie. I'll be interested to see what you do. If you still need a World Timer, let me know. Kindest regards, Bill

      The entire line of DeWitt Academia were ETA or ETA / Valjoux; however, that particular movement (DW 2021 / 2121) may not have been. I checked again at The Watch Enthusiast and all of that line (Academia) were identified as ETA-based watches. The ones with retrogrades were ETA / Agenhor (Agenhor being my very favorite movement makers!). I was unable to find anything more definitive on DeWitt movements, but if DeWitt told you that no ETA base was used in the DW2121 and it was 100% in-house ... that's what they told you. (Note that there's no exhibition window in the back.) Best of luck JD. Kindest regards, Bill

      Hi Lord David 4, that's interesting. What happened and how did you get your money back? Generally, there are so many trade restrictions between Russia and everyone else that it's very difficult buying a watch from them. Usually, all purchases are made through some other country that has no trade restrictions with Russia nor your country. On Chrono 24 the Russian sellers always tell you that you have to come to Russia to buy the offered watch. A couple of years ago I was in St. Petersburg, Russia, and I tried to buy a religious artifact for my sister and was told that I could buy it but could not take it out of the country. So while I'd like to buy from the Russians ( and everyone else for that matter), trade restrictions prevent it. Kindest regards, Bill

      I filed a PayPal complaint that I had yet to receive the watch and got a refund. We're talking simple vintage Russian/Soviet Union here. For high end brands and pieces Russian sellers always say you need to be in Moscow (St Petersburg or wherever in Russia) in person to physically collect the watch and pay for it.

      I had one Ebay deal for a Russian Vostok with an alarm for $35 + some shipping. The watch showed up exactly as advertised and worth what I paid for it, but the seller was not in Russia. It's a market I'm rarely in, but had to scratch the alarm itch, and for 35 bucks, more than worth it. So you did get a refund , though. That's great! Cheers, Bill

      I just scored a deal for a 1967 Seiko World Time 6217 7010. What do you think about the watch? I'd appreciate a reply, thanks!

      So tell us about it T&T. That one is very interesting and holds somewhat of a historical position at both Seiko and among automatic world timers.

    awful explanation. the speaker looks tired and bored and the exposition lacks motion and energy.

      Gee Waldo...I don't shout at the camera and jump up and down, but tired and bored? You know, a lot of times, watch channels get started by smart guys who really can improve the content and interest level. RUclips is always looking for new channels to better communicate, and you just might be the guy to do it. So tell me about your watch collection and what watch topics you're interested in, and take some sample videos of yourself talking about watches and give it a try. Cheers, Bill

      no offense intended, Bill. it was an objective appreciation that may be helpful for the next video. i have a large watch collection, particularly fed by Seikos and Citizen watches. i am not ready yet to make a clip on my babies. cheers Bill!

      Hey Waldo! Here are a couple ideas; check out the latest video and see if it's better or worse ( ruclips.net/video/SrGAWKQkcdw/видео.html ) , and second, take a picture of each one of your watches and send them in for a collection review. I'm a fan of the early Seiko 5 and soon-to-be-retired Alpine. As for Citizen, they're doing some very interesting things. They have a new luxury model with a movement by La Joux-Perret (I forgot the model name). Also, in the latest video, the first watch brand discussed is one owned by Citizen. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Bill

      @@watchartsci Hello Bill. I will send to you a few shots of my watches, so you could review. I mostly collect divers though. I recently got hold of the rare model SKZ329J1. This model is impossible to find. Do you have an email account you could share with me? Many thanks, Cheers! Waldo

    Vacheron Constantin Overseas World time is $38,800 and $25,995 ? what the fuck! ... that's a lot of money for a wristwatch. Just get a gw5000 gshock for travel.

      Fesal...it goes without saying that you should avoid getting watches that are beyond your budget...we all have to. (...avoid 'wtf' comments ... please.) Take care, Bill
