Jerry Frempong, a London-based house music DJ, agency founder, and record label owner, has music coursing through his veins, a legacy deeply rooted in his late father, Anthony Roberts Frempong. In the 1980s, his father pioneered the Ghanaian 'Hi Life' sound, showcasing numerous Ghanaian artists and productions on the family's label, Asona Records.
In a remarkable turn of events, Jerry's wife, Katie, stumbled upon a treasure trove of 'lost' Asona Records back-catalogue while tidying up their family home. Amidst a pile of neglected garden tools at the bottom of the garden, she unearthed mysterious bin bags. Rather than dismissing them, a gut feeling urged her to investigate further. To her astonishment, she found a wealth of rare soul, funk, disco, boogie, and Ghana Highlife records. Recognizing the significance of the find, Katie brought it to Jerry's attention.
The news of this serendipitous discovery reached Pete Adarkwah, owner of BBE Music, who promptly approached Jerry to discuss the reissue of this historic catalogue. Consequently, Jerry inked a reissue deal with BBE, ensuring that all 11 albums from Asona Records are now accessible through BBE Music. Jerry encapsulates the excitement of this rediscovery with his trademark enthusiasm, declaring, "If you don't sweat, it ain't a set." Prepare to groove to the rhythms of Ghanaian history revived.
