Great Review. John, I think you have one of the best presentation styles I've seen and you blend your wealth of knowledge in perfectly.
I hope we'll continue to see more videos / reviews coming from you.
    Cheers, Martin.

Just got mine delivered 2 days ago from China , about 5 days , for $150 for meter and $45 shipping .
I am saving your great review to replace manual , also downloaded the DE-5000 manual .
Now to check mine out , have to take a look at the power supply issue .
    Thanks John

+IgnitionSoundStudios Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. I am now back after a 2 year break, (see Lab Tour video for explanation) and I do hope to do more videos.

I am happy you enjoyed the video. Sorry didn't measure the R16. Seems like some great discussions going on Dave's forum on this topic. I think I might revisit this problem again in the near future maybe another very short video if I find anything.

jwrelector. Thanks for the review. I'd already purchased the meter before I saw this vid. I must say that the 10kHz and 100kHz ranges seem useless, especially with electrolytics, as the test voltage drops to the mV level. So I may return it. Seems like the designers gave up designing at that point.

Hello I have a year-old MS5308 with the same SMPS power supply, and am able to EXACTLY replicate your Resistance measurement problems on AC mains. There is a LOT of floating RF energy on the output of the supply. I have found the fix is to ground one side or the other of the 12V DC via a 0.2uf capacitor. So the MS5308 is still floating, but the power supply is (AC) ground referrenced. Worked for me...

Hi jontofly, no real change with or without batteries. Thanks for the suggestion. I did a followup on this problem and the video is posted on my channel.

I have been checking it out a bit more and mine has a lot of noise/signal from the switching power supply at its output. I am planning on now posting a followup video on the problem, I hope by the end of this week.

Just an update on the review. I have determined it is the external power supply and when I use my bench power supply the resistance readings on the LCR Tester do not change from internal battery source to external power supply. I may do a very short follow-up video on this topic.

I can watch this video again and again. I learn something new every time. Thumbs up, jwrelectro.
As I am waiting for my unit to arrive, I wonder; Did you ever measured the resistance between R16 (solder point) and GND?

Спасибо за отличный обзор отличного прибора. Одно из его достоинств - возможность замерять ëмкость не выпаивая конденсатор из платы.

Glad you enjoyed the video and as you said it is a handy tool for testing capacitors.

Trevor, Didn't see specs on the ESR in the manual. I tried the 390 uF and it measured 0.09 ohms for ESR. Putting resistors in series it went up to over 4 Mohms, (the meter really wanted to go into parallel model for obvious reasons.). With same cap and using the Rs mode I got 0.098 ohms so you get 1 milli-ohm resolution. The Rs ranges seems to be based on 2 so up to almost 20 ohms you get 5-digits. Example: 18.523 ohms so again 1 milli-ohm resolution. Not sure about accuracy.

Yeah, eevblog.com and the forum is the place to go figure out your electronics stuff. Hope to see another video on the MS5308, because you are a natural video blogger talent. I guess you have figured that out by now, regarding all the eevblog comments...

Okay thanks for doing the test. I am seriously considering this unit but the power supply issue has made me wonder what else might be wrong with it. Wonder how reliable it will be for example. Am worried it has no input protection as I can see me blowing the thing up.

Thanks for the excellent review! Mine came without the AC supply: can you please tell me if tip or ring is positive? It's supposed to be 12V/1A, right?
In addition: could the problem with the resistor readout, AC vs DC, be caused by the supply? I noticed that it is an SMPS. Does the same occur with a linear supply i.e. one with a classical transformer? Or an SMPS with a uA7812 for increased ripple reduction?

Sorry I don't have the power supply anymore and I just moved so the LCR tester is in a box... somewhere. When I used my linear bench power supply the problem was fixed.

One should know that this device doesn't measure L or C, it just measures R but on high frequency. Its a reactance meter, using the Xc or XL it calculates Cx and Lx, it doesnt measure C or L at all . And that my friend you can build your self on cheap . i share the passion for test gear but this one is not needed .400 bucks for a cheap board and LCD is a bit too much for me . If i needed such a device i would build one , with variable wide band frequency and better acc. But i dont need it

Nice review with now wasted time. I have the DE-5000 and the Mastech is basicaly identical. I didn't see any input protection on the Mastech circuit board, did I miss it?. The DE-5000 has unpopulated footprints for protection diodes on the input. Waiting for IET to respond to my question on what they should be populated with.

Thank you for a very detail oriented review! I'm looking to buy MS5308 or "DER EE DE-5000" (I have $200 budget). What would you buy today? Do happen to have "DER EE DE-5000" and you could compare them? Or should I get something different? I'm a subscriber now.

As mentioned in the video there are a few problems with the MS5308 but overall it has been useful for me over the last few years. I do not have the DE-5000 but many have given it a good review and it is a bit more portable than the MS5308. Since I only have the MS5308 I can not really make a recommendation compared to others on the market and of course there is always the budget. Glad you liked the review.

Hi. Thanks for the review, its been really helpful. I was wondering if you could tell me what the ESR range(s) and resolution(s) does it have?
    Thanks

I noticed that as well, but your criticism is a bit harsh I think. I
know a very good EE who has designed products that you are likely to own, and he says 'Hert' across the board (he's Jamaican, so at least he has some kind of an excuse ;) ).
It's funny how something like that can escape the attention of an otherwise intelligent seeming person though.

Sorry if this comes across as spam but I will soon be offering this meter for sale likely at a very competitive price. It will be at least mid January before I can get stock though. I'll post in the EEVBlog an MJLorton forums when available. Cheers, Franky.
