How To - install an inexpensive set of 4 wire Kelvin Clips to our new DER EE DE-5000 Handheld LCR Meter capable of 4 Wire Measurement.
The standard TL-21 Kelvin Clips that came with the LCR Meter were not long enough or big enough for use on the large electrolytic capacitors we intend to use it on so we upgraded the Kelvin Test Leads with cheap price but decent quality and value Kelvin Clips purchased online from Amazon for $14.70, see info below.

We found for precise measurements like low ESR, Ohms etc that true 4 wire was needed and I could not just calibrate my Fluke Meter leads in the LCR meter. It fails calibration (leads too long?) and the leads have 0.2 ohms of resistance which can be accounted for mathematically unless you need higher resolution hence the need for 4 wire measurement.

Thanks for the great video. You just gave me a lesson on Kelvin leads and how accurate the DE-5000 LCR meter is. Two days ago I ordered the meter, I found your video and just ordered a set of Kelvin leads off of ebay. As soon as I get the two above items I will be modifying the Kelvin lead assembly.

I plan to make another banana jack kelvin module so I can plug in different clips like the larger ones.
If you have any issues with the shields improperly terminated let me know what brand. I have read several amazon reviews and seen some videos stating that but both mine were fine.

Great upgrade. I'm going to do the same thing when my TL-21 and the clip leads show up in the mail. I'm going to see if I can squeeze in 4 bnc connectors so that I can detach the clip leads and use them elsewhere if I decide to. If I can't get the connectors shoe horned in, I'll go ahead and cut the leads like you did.

@@KTFG Will do. The reason I'm going with the bnc is not only for being able to use the clip leads on different equipment, but I've also ordered the Kelvin type tweezers for SMC and they also have the bnc connectors. that way I can interchange them without having to get a second plug in block.

Cyrustek ES51990 chipset is used in Mastech MS5308, GenRad/IET DE-5000, CEM DT-9935 and others, but the 4 Wire Kelvin Clip improve a lot the accuracy and only the DE-5000 allow this hack.
I've never been able to get a standard set of test leads to calibrate with my DER-5000. I might pick up these parts and make the same thing you did here. Thanks for the video.

min 4:25, I also have the same fail error using Fluke suregrip leads, I suppose that the Cp/Cs changes during the cal. (for large leads)
Interesting that your Fluke probes would not calibrate. I have a Fluke 8845A but it lacks capacitance and ESR measurements, which is why I have been considering the DE-5000 (and hence, found your videos). I also have the Fluke TL 2x2W (4-wire) probes for the 8845A, for making excellent resistance measurements. The wire length is just over 1 meter though, which makes me wonder if it would work. But I would need to purchase a DE-5000 to find out. Thank you for the Kelvin Clips video though. I found that helpful information indeed.
I should try some shorter leads just to see of the length was an issue with calibration. I have seen the Agilent Keysight handheld LCR meter used with long leads in videos. Granted its not 4 wire and not sure if it was calibrated.
I have some long 4 wire banana jack kelvin clips that I am going to modify another TL-21 to work with so I can swap out different 4 wire clips. We'll see if I have any issues with those.

Doesn't putting both wires on the same side of the handle degrade the performance? I would think it desirable to have the sense and current sides isolated all the way to the jaws.
Yes but in many instances it’s negligible, they are still 4 wire up to that point. Just depends on the circumstances and if that extra level of precision is necessary for your task.

I have a late question on this mod. One side of a kelvin clip is voltage the other side is current. Should the clips be oriented when connected so the current side is is towards the outer side of the lead being tested and voltage on the inner side ? Or doesn't that matter ? Sorry if I'm not clear. Kelvin clips supply current and measures the voltage for accurate measurements. This is probably a dumb question but it's got me baffled. Thanks.

I saw you mention in another comment that this meter won’t to do in circuit ESR for capacitors? But in other videos I had seen many people impressed with the In circuit testing with this meter.
Apparently the ability to change the test frequency allows user to test capacitors under their stated spec.
Not sure I understand what would put this meter above the $40 versions that test in circuit. I thought that was the whole point with all of the head-to-head comparison’s all over RUclips

Some in circuit test can me made depending on the cirtiut and frequency used but it takes an understanding of the circuit and electronics to determine that.
Just bc a $40 device advertises that it can test in circuit doesn't mean it can, its depends more on the circuit less the tool. It's unlikely to do more than this tool. One of the primary differences is that this true 4 wire kelvin test leads and this meter has more features.
If price is a factor (this is very inexpensive for what it is) then get a cheaper model and if you outgrow it then move up to this or higher.

A point I meant to add, it is generally agreed upon that its better to isolate the DUT for best results.
Think of this simple analogy: Ofter you can test for a blown fuse in circuit but the are situations were you will still read continuity (low ohm xformer etc) even thought the fuse is blown. So when in doubt we lift one side of the fuse to isolate if not completely remove.
If you are familiar with the circuit though or you have a TS procedure that allows for testing in circuit then you can so long as you know what results you should and shouldn't get and no other series or parallel device with skew that results.

Do you know which eBay seller you purchased them from? I'm interested in making a TL-24 or whatever mod using the 3 PCBs for guard, + / - and also using the 3 banana connectors below and then adding ports so things can be plugged in such as those BNC connectors... I'm thinking of buying a 3D printer which would make it easier to create a new top for it...

which use you have for this equipment? Is for prototyping or repairing?
I use it for inductance readings motors, inuductors etc. and capacitor ESR.

I tried the mod but could not get a pass calibrate. Some cheap kelvin leads wont work..

See if it has a shield terminated (soldered) to one of the wires at the kelvin clip handle. I have read reviews on amazon of that problem and have seen videos on RUclips about it.

Just went to do this and have discovered my so called TEST HELPER Kelvin leads from Amazon have NO shield. WTF?
Apparently that’s a common problem along with the two sides being soldered together on one side or even the shield being soldered to one side. I did not experience that problem with the ones that I bought and linked in the video description

I don’t know that you have to have the shield. I’m sure it’s better but I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary.

You made a HORRIBLE mistake by not showing the results by first using the supplied leads. You should have COMPARED the supplied leads measurements with the Kelvin Clip measurements that you created to show how they both perform.
Are you always so dramatic?
What is to compare? I primarily made these so that they would be longer.
The difference between true 4 wire separated on each half and 4 wire jointed on the same half is negligible as I mentioned in the video.
