Nope. Sam and Cait flirt on interviews and on captured on film breaks on set for funsies. They are close friends and have each other’s backs as professional working actors, but in the romance department Cait is totally into her husband (and the father of her child) Tony. There is truly no secret, hot amour going on between them, exaggerated visual jokes on camera aside.
Sam is another story however. I ache for the suffering and hurt that he is going through in the romance department. We see the sadness he is suffering in those expressive ocean blue eyes in some photos. A lot of his smiles for the camera seem sadly forced to please his loyal Outlander and other fans. It breaks my heart to see it. He may have had a bit of “the hots” for Cait during the first few seasons in some deep subconscious way, but that seems to have cooled off later, mostly due to Cait (by then wed happily to Tony) putting on the brakes I suspect.
Sam has in truth been dating various other actress-model women at times for what he may have thought each time was the real deal, but these rarely worked out. Sam seems to have commitment issues due to unresolved feelings about intimacy and trust arising from his father abandoning his family when he was a toddler (addressed himself in his Waypoints autobiography). The gold-digging plastic Barbie doll actress-models he has been involved with serially have not helped matters. They all seemed to be using him as “for show relationships” to bolster their own miserable acting or modeling careers and bank accounts by associating themselves with the rising sexy star. A few of these women attempted to entrap him unsuccessfully into forced marriage or into providing child support under false pretenses when impregnated by other less careful other partners they were cheating on him with on the side. No man appreciates women using them like that. Poor Sam, a very responsible type, having to endure this manipulative behavior! He must have hated them doing this to him. Not a recipe in either camp for long term romantic success or in trust building that Sam needs. While Sam may enjoy shagging multiple women as some young men do while sewing all of the joyous wild oats that go with rising Hollywood and BAFTA fame, he keeps picking the absolutely worst emotionally abusive partners with whom he is bound to fail if his intention is to form long-term relationships or to marry, settle down, and start a family. I am not knocking handsome Sam for enjoying all of the male perks (and bevies of available perfect ten women dying to bed him) of being sexy and famous. He endured long years of struggling hand to mouth, living in cold bed sitter flats, and working other less than exciting day jobs to support himself when roles evaded him to establish his career, and feeling professionally invisible, like a loser, and unwanted by most women. Suddenly hitting professional and financial success on Outlander was a happy change for him, so why not revel in the idea of many women who never looked at him twice before now lusting for him and turning his head? It was a big change for Sam of humble beginnings from a broken family to handle all at once I suppose.
If anyone is expecting Sam to get serious and form anything like a long term serious relationship, they will be deeply disappointed at the moment. This is not where he is emotionally. He is enjoying being a gorgeous, available male lusted after by many women (including chat show hosts behaving unprofessionally on set in front of live cameras), but at the moment he is not seriously looking at women who would be more appropriate and suitable as long-term wives and soulmates as well as true friends to him. Apart from the happy perks of easy sexual encounters with many women, Sam at the moment seems to truly fear emotional commitment and the self-revealing vulnerability that necessarily goes with it. He suffers from shyness and low self esteem for some reason at the same time; surprisingly for some reason inside his head he doesn’t see himself as desirable or attractive. He sees only his own faults. While enjoying lots of hot sex with many super-attractive women, he detests at the end of each disappointing superficial relationship finding out that these plastic pillow girls don’t care a crap for him as the sensitive, sweet and kind person that he truly is beneath all of those ultra good looks externally. Sam will be happier in his love life if he goes for the more enduring aspects of prospective dates and chooses more tender, kinder, and compatible partners who share his goals, values, and likes, even if they are not as flawlessly pretty as the plastic ball buster bad actress-model dates with whom he has wasted so much of his time in bed. Our beautiful, sweet Sam is a truly nice and giving guy who deserves so much better in the romance department than the third rate encounters with the wrong women that he has been getting.
