Bill Haley, que nació en Michigan bajo el nombre de William John Clifton Haley, se convertiría en uno de los personajes de mayor impacto en la historia del rock and roll. Sus padres eran músicos, de ahí que no es de extrañar que empezara temprano tocando la guitarra y cantando en presentaciones organizadas por él y otros niños que buscaban juntar dinero para causas locales.
Habiendo quedado ciego del ojo izquierdo desde muy chico, Haley se convirtió en un niño tímido que pudo asimilar el actuar en público. Sin embargo, esa ceguera lo obligó a estar muy conciente de sí mismo a lo largo de su carrera.
Si fuera solamente por la canción, Haley debería tener un lugar en la historia: en ella se funde un tema rithm and blues con una base musical rocanrolera. Sin embargo, su trabajo en la historia del rock and roll empezó dos años antes cuando "Crazy, Man, Crazy", una canción suya, se convirtió en la primera rola en entrar a la lista Billboard. Durante casi todos los cincuenta, Haley estuvo en las listas impulsado por las películas adolescentes.
