When eating mochi, it's 90% of time not powder sugar, but the rice flour. Because of it the mochi doesnt stick to your fingers or whatever, that's why they put that flour on it

If you're looking for something more similar to onigiri, there a lot of sweet "onigiri" style desserts that are wrapped in bamboo/banana leaves in a lot of other Asian cultures such as Vietnam, Thailand, and China. These usually don't come with fruit but I think Thailand might have a banana one(?) not too sure on that tho

But due to the large amount of cultivation the bananas grew resistant to the pesticide or something used against the funghi that grew on them, and they went extinct. So the reason bananas taste different to it's flavoring is because todays bananas taste different to old bananas and the flavouring is based on the old ones.
