I saw a good hint the other day… take the needle out with it still threaded. Hold onto the thread and you can’t drop the needle.

You did not change the thread because you did not thread the needle.
Take the needle out before you pull thread out. Oh, BTW I hope you are not pulling thread out backwards… that will get lint right into the guts of threading components. So here is the order… take the needle out, cut thread at spool and pull the cut thread through toward the needle. If you don’t have a threader… thread the needle with one of those freebie threaders put the needle the flat side back into a needle inserter for installation with the thread running from front to back.
