I did the same thing with a refrigerator compressor. You should have hooked a pressure gage to it to show pressure. The intake can serve as a vacuum pump also..

Instate of using starting switch it is better to use running capacitor. It will also reduce current consumption. Will also provide smooth start.

The colour of the wires doesnt make any difference, you can even use the same colour wire for all the connections, as long as live goes to the common N goes to run coil and switch/cap goes to start coil it will work
