Thank you so much for posting. I'm almost 40 now and live in vegas but grew up there when it was Riverside and when the ride came out. Now I have a daughter that I hope to ride this with one day. Just showed her the vid. Thanks so much. Great video
What had really set the stage for riding this was seeing how precarious that thing was shaking as you stood in line. Sure, the steel monsters are scary, but nothing beats the terror of a wooden rollercoaster shaking itself to pieces while you're riding it AND the knowledge that you probably knew better than getting on the muhfuh being your last lucid thought. When all is said and done, The Wicked Cyclone, which replaced this coaster is an amazing ride. I will miss the special discomfort of riding the original, but not that much. : )
The first (and only) time I went on this before it turned into the wiked cyclone, I got stuck at the very top. I was in the third seat too. That scared me to DEATH!
The OG Cyclone was always the first ride you'd see when you got to the Riverside parking lot... and the last one you'd see on your way home, as you glance down lovingly at the plum-shaded welt on the side of your knee that the Cyclone kissed you with as a lil forget-me-not.
@@shmackatrotsky5394 I wish we could have rode together on the Cyclizone, sporting matching bruises on the side of our heads from having smashed into each other on that notorious first curve which threatened to throw so many children to their deaths. Uhp. I'm getting a little feklempt here.
It's now called the Wicked Cyclone so if anyone wants to ride you should ride in the back because it Whips you down the almost 90 degree drop at a speed of only 55 MPH but it goes faster in the rain so hold on to your lap bars tightly!
Ahhh...the good ol' backbreaker. I remember riding it with the original first drop. The first lefty turnaround is very scary as you watch the entire structure shake beneath you and the short left after the right hand turnaround just about snaps you in half every time. Great coaster but only if you are a wooden coaster fanatic like me.
I had the opportunity to get the credit on this ride, it was also one of my first credits, It’s to bad the big old cyclone was taken from us too soon, this vintage coaster made our days fun with its insane airtime and its 109 foot tall drop was the biggest thrill back in the 80s when it was first manufactured, the vintage coaster will always be in our hearts. And wicked cyclone being an amazing coaster ,but we still have to remember who started it all, the king of riverside, cyclone
It lost quite a bit of the extremeness in the corners when they added the breaks on a lot of the corners and shortened the original drop. It made a huge difference as you can see how slow the train comes.
Hello from Manchester England, just an hour away from the mighty Grand National at the equally wonderful BPB...recently renamed PBB. I lived 18yrs in Boston. This was my favourite coaster within close driving range. (Yankee Cannonball and Flyer Comet were perfectly good closer woodies.) Towards the end of our stay over there - myself and my American wife and daughter - the Superman steelie arrived. That was a great coaster but steel is not my thing. I loved the Riverside Cyclone but recognise that some people found it either too brutal or too rough.
Just an fyi to the people who don't know, the coaster wasn't completely replaced with wicked cyclone, they used the old salvageable wood and built the whole new structure to accommodate the new steel rails, making it a hybrid coaster. I unfortunately never got the chance to ride the original cyclone as I was too young when it closed, but it's bones still live on in the new ride that took it's place.
You just reminded me how beautiful this coaster was. Six Flags New England was my home park before moving out west. I wish they had preserved it. Looks like half of what it used to be. It was a rough ride.
I enjoyed going on this ride, even though I have not been at the park for 10 years. I will miss the fact that they are closing this ride that has been at the park for my entire life!
I got to ride this in it's first season in '83 with the PTC trains. It was absolutely the most thrilling and scary coaster ride of my life. It was still pretty good with the Morgan trains after but somehow not quite as intense. Now with the first drop neutered, it's still fun but has lost it's bite. What a shame.
@99melissalynn I live in Connecticut and Maine half half. Back in the late 80's, early 90's the "Riverside Cyclone" was anything short than a violent beating that us older gen came back for more and more. Bruised and banged up, u came back for more. Now it's a poorman's rollercoaster
When me and my friend went on this last year during a school trip, there was barely a line and we went on like three times! Wooden roller coasters are the best!!!
I don't know about that. I haven't been on the Coney Island Cyclone, but it seems to keep its speed throughout. What used to be the "grand finale" of the Riverside Cyclone now has trim brakes that usually slow the coaster down to a near-halt. They also haven't greased the track in years. But I've caught it on good days where it was pretty wild. With the proper maintenance, I think the Riverside Cyclone could be up there with El Toro and Boulder Dash.
Agree that both El Toro and Boulder Dash are superb, fantastic woodies, in the spirit of the old days. Not for the feint of heart. A girl I met sat on the last row of Boulder Dash, damned near passed out, later felt sick and was diagnosed with a concussion.
Never got a chance to ride this, by the time I was tall enough Wicked Cyclone took it's place. Oh well, Wicked is tied for my favorite coaster of all time, tied with Thunderbolt at the same park, which is nostalgic to me because of how much I wanted to ride it when I was too small.
this ride was fucking awesome before they retracked it. Seriously the shortened the pulled up the drops and the train didn't shake as much which takes away from what makes wooden coasters great which is the insane amount of shaking.
it sucks that they changed it! That ride use to shake you to the bones and made it such a rush of intense force while riding it. No it's just another smooth metal coaster
Was awesome til they retracked it in 2002 and got rid of the 1st drop. Nothing like what it used to be. Was an evil air time machine back in the day, I remember riding Superman (Bizarro) and then this back to back and I couldn't decide which was more intense. It's a shell of it's old self now. :(
I feel like I might be the only one saying this, but I'm pretty happy to see this one go. It looks SO fun from the outside but then you drop down that first hill, and realize that you aren't getting nearly the drop you though. Beyond that, it was VERY rocky, moreso than the average woody and to the point where I found it pretty uncomfortable. It was also much more of a twisty turny coaster, it really didn't have as much in the hills department as I'd have liked. Wicked looks pretty fun. Full drop, smooth track (although admittedly that probably loses some of the fun of a woody with a normal degree of shaking), looks like a few more hills... personally don't care one way or another about inversions but they should be cool I guess.
This is probably the most intense roller coaster I've been on - it wasn't much of a thrill, it was more of a 'I hope my neck doesn't break' ride for me. Other than worrying about my life on the most bumpy ride in the park, rebuilt around 1988 (correct me if I'm wrong) , it was pretty fun.
Unfortunately, they did. They shortened the first drop by 20 feet and put trim brakes (brakes that slow the train down) on the twisty part of the ride to save maintenance costs. In 2011, they began a project to re-track the ride with a more structurally sound rail system, and now it's smoother than Batman. Hopefully they will shut the brakes off for good when the whole ride is re-tracked, and eventually restore the original first drop (which you can still see under the current first drop).
Spent my whole summer of 2005 riding this, that sign at top always made me laugh. Love wicked cyclone but so much of me misses the wildness of this ride.
@love4knex It USE to be extremely rough. For the 2011 season, Cyclone is getting a large portion of the track fitted with the Rocky Mountain Construction Co. Topper Track. It was recently installed on the Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. If you heard of what they did at Six Flags Over Texas with the Texas Giant, it is somewhat like that except the Topper Track goes on top of the pre-existing rather than completely replacing it.
It doesn't need a steeper drop or modern trains. The drop is exciting not because how steep it is, but because of how quickly it transitions from a gentle slope to a steep one. The PTC trains are fine; they just need to make the seat dividers more comfortable. And they probably should be careful of where they put Topper Track.
