The Spanish empire not wanting to lose what little they had left in the Americas, liberalized the economy of Puerto Rico but also opened the immigration gates to any Catholic (did not matter if they came from enemy nations) who wanted to move there. It included free land. Color did not matter but non-Europeans got half the amount of land of European migrants. The greater majority came from Europe. This resulted in PR. population increasing to one million in one century. I'm Argentine but have lived my entire life in the US and can tell you that this was certainly the case at some point in the past. My DNA says I am 68% European and 28% Indigenous. However, lately this sentiment has changed. There are more and more people of all races coming to live in Argentina. And they are not discriminated as they once were, it has become a melting pot as the US is. You can't blame current Argentines for the sins of their ancestors.

After living there 3 months, it was only a drunk, young, white man who jeered me as a “Cako” (monkey or thug) with after they beat France in the World Cup; a small indigenous boy who gestured like he was shooting me with a gun, and some mestizo servers at an exclusive restaurant who refused to serve me while immediately serving white Argentines who came well after me. So this is the picture of life as a wealthy Black person in Buenos Aires.

I'm Uruguayan and we often come out as the calmer, more progressive neighbors. However, lots of Uruguayans take pride in being whiter than Argentina, and I'd like to say some things about the reality of minorities in here. To begin with, our first president commited a genocide known as the massacre of 'salsipuedes', where most of the native population was erased from this territory. That's why there basically no natives here. Regarding blacks, more slaves were taken to Montevideo than to Argentina (per capita, at least), so black population here is around 10%. A much bigger percentage. That isn't reflected on people's minds. A big example of this is music, with candombe being musical rythm born here from African slaves and, based on that rythm, milonga and tango were born. Both styles are globally associated with white Uruguayans and Argentinians, but candombe is always left apart as an isolated black culture thing Nowdays blacks are, on average, considerably poorer than the rest of the population Idk if this makes for a good video but Uruguay's silent racism is up there with our much louder neighbor

Of the vast majority of slaves landed in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, few remained in present-day Argentina and Uruguay; while the majority were taken to Chile and mainly Peru. What is false is that Afro-Argentine men were taken to the Paraguayan War with the promise of obtaining their freedom. That war was between 1864-1870, and by then, slavery had already been abolished for over a decade. In 1813 freedom of the womb was promulgated, that is, all the children of slaves were born free. And in 1853 slavery was completely abolished; that is, 11 years before the Paraguayan War. Finally, in that same year of 1853 the National Constitution was drafted. This not only abolished slavery, as I mentioned, but also established an open policy towards immigration. Between that year of 1853 and 1950 was when the transatlantic immigration process took place, being between around 1880 and 1920 when the largest number of immigrants arrived. It should be noted that although the immigrants were overwhelmingly European, there were also significant Syrian-Lebanese minorities and from other regions of the former Ottoman Empire. The war thing is more complicated the central government had actually no power at the time to force the provinces to send men for the army for the war so the only provinces that did comply were the ones in the Middle of the conflict (closer to Paraguay Brazil and Uruguay) and those were the only provinces where there used to be plantation so were most of the black population was located, but it wasn't juts them that were forced to go to war, every male there was conscripted. We have so many African immigration and its fine nobody cares AT ALL. I'm pretty sure everybody here is more worried about emigration. argentinian here, my country abolish slavery in 1813, before we were even a formal country. so the slave trade never got to the same level as usa and the porsentage of population of black pepole never was great. the we have a masive influx of europeans mostly italy and spain. this contry never segregated blacks like te usa. and we alwas permited marriages between any etnicity. most of the black population was mixed and assimilated. this country is open to all man who want to inhabit argentinian soil. it's in the constitution.

As an Argentinian with possible black roots, I am forced to answer, there was never an anti-blackness policy in the country, although it is true that they were the social sector that suffered the most during the early and mid-19th century. I'm Argentine but have lived my entire life in the US and can tell you that this was certainly the case at some point in the past. My DNA says I am 68% European and 28% Indigenous. I'm Uruguayan and we often come out as the calmer, more progressive neighbors. However, lots of Uruguayans take pride in being whiter than Argentina, and I'd like to say some things about the reality of minorities in here.
To begin with, our first president commited a genocide known as the massacre of 'salsipuedes', where most of the native population was erased from this territory. That's why there basically no natives here.
Regarding blacks, more slaves were taken to Montevideo than to Argentina (per capita, at least), so black population here is around 10%. A much bigger percentage. That isn't reflected on people's minds. A big example of this is music, with candombe being musical rythm born here from African slaves and, based on that rythm, milonga and tango were born. Both styles are globally associated with white Uruguayans and Argentinians, but candombe is always left apart as an isolated black culture thing

There are some inaccuracies in the video.
Of the vast majority of slaves landed in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, few remained in present-day Argentina and Uruguay; while the majority were taken to Chile and mainly Peru.
What is false is that Afro-Argentine men were taken to the Paraguayan War with the promise of obtaining their freedom. That war was between 1864-1870, and by then, slavery had already been abolished for over a decade. In 1813 freedom of the womb was promulgated, that is, all the children of slaves were born free. And in 1853 slavery was completely abolished; that is, 11 years before the Paraguayan War.
Finally, in that same year of 1853 the National Constitution was drafted. This not only abolished slavery, as I mentioned, but also established an open policy towards immigration. Between that year of 1853 and 1950 was when the transatlantic immigration process took place, being between around 1880 and 1920 when the largest number of immigrants arrived. It should be noted that although the immigrants were overwhelmingly European, there were also significant Syrian-Lebanese minorities and from other regions of the former Ottoman Empire. As you point out in the video, the main cause of the "whitening" of the population was the excessive number of immigrants who arrived in a country that was relatively sparsely populated.

Black were a minority because the geography here never allowed to have many plantations for slaves. In 1813 the freedom of wombs was stabilized and later on slavery was prohibited entirely, we never had segregation, most people here have both Europeans and amerindian descent because as I said it was well seen to marry whoever you wanted. The war thing is more complicated the central government had actually no power at the time to force the provinces to send men for the army for the war so the only provinces that did comply were the ones in the Middle of the conflict (closer to Paraguay Brazil and Uruguay) and those were the only provinces where there used to be plantation so were most of the black population was located, but it wasn't juts them that were forced to go to war, every male there was conscripted. We have so many African immigration and its fine nobody cares AT ALL. I'm pretty sure everybody here is more worried about emigration.
People here were racist yes, but just as racist as everywhere else in the word at the time, this video lacks any kind of foundation.

Yes it was that deep. I found out 15 years ago travelling around the world with my best friend from London UK in 2008. I learnt so much about world history during those travel adventures.
It also went on in Haiti when they erased whites and mulattoes and its going on now in south africa but you will not hear about it.
In other nations the same thing goes. Example, the Caucaus region. Erasing historical cultural claims to a region in order to say it was always part of there nation and so on.

On the other hand I can tell you that at the present, discrimination related with black people is nearly inexistant here. It might exist discrimination with asians (as we had may inmigrants and the cultural barrier is high) may be, or reggarding different political beleaves. But I can asure you, we would love to have a black argentinan in our national team.
At the present, we even use the word "Negro" as a friendly way of calling a friend. For us this is not offensive at all! There's a story where a Futbol legend from uruguay was criticized for using that word, without even noticing it even could be thought as something offensive.
So I understand this mught not reflect our past. But I can grant you you will not be discriminated here by the color of yout skin!

Although I am Chilean from the south of Argentine parents, I have to say that I had never seen black people after the last decades in my city that Basically we are between 8000, a thousand people it is very rare to see people of African origin in the streets even in schools they never spoke to us about africans In these parts of the country Basically it was not very common to see them the first time I saw a black person was when I was 10 years old and it was a family that had moved close to where I live... I was very young for that time.. and they were very kind people.they made very delicious food i had to , it was like something we had never seen before and I know it sounds weird.. and exaggerated but in reality it was not common to see black people Since they never told us about them today, Today it is somewhat more common to see blacks on the streets, especially tourists... but it is still something a bit unusual... it is good to know the history behind it... and it is good that This channel is causing dysfunction for Africans since we don't hear much about them in our countries :)

argentinian here, my country abolish slavery in 1813, before we were even a formal country. so the slave trade never got to the same level as usa and the porsentage of population of black pepole never was great. the we have a masive influx of europeans mostly italy and spain. this contry never segregated blacks like te usa. and we alwas permited marriages between any etnicity. most of the black population was mixed and assimilated. this country is open to all man who want to inhabit argentinian soil. it's in the constitution.
