There was a war in Argentina in the 18th century that killed off a majority of the black population, the war of the triple alliance or something like that.
Most comments haven't watched the full video it seems At around minute 5, it is correctly said that the NT doesn't have black players because the country doesn't have black people, amounting to less than 0.5% of the population, and it is stated that this is not racist in and of itself. But the reason why only 0.5% of our population is black CAN be traced to racist origins, from the XIX century and the 90s decade alike

Calling someone Negro in many countries isn’t Racist. In Mexico we do it all the time. I live in AZ for 20+ years now and have come to know about 5 black Hispanics who themselves went by the name “El negro” , just like some light skin Hispanics go by “guero”
Thats inaccurate but just slightly, "negro" can be used as a racial slur just as much as it is used as an endearing term, I'm hispanic myself also so I'm not just talking out of my ass when it comes to this stuff, and more often than not I hear people disparagingly talking about anyone with dark skin using such terms as black or negro, moreno or dark skin, prieto or really black, so on and so forth, I even remember some black people from when I was a child who's nicknames were simio and monkey, you also see this culture reflected in households when a parent finds out their white son or daughter is dating a black person, the feeling is not that of embrace but of displeasure or disappointment, you can also see this culture in telenovelas, the protagonists are never black in Hispanic countries, beauty pageants are dominated mostly by white people, there's also under representation of blacks in politics, surely there are more examples of racism in other cultures throughout Latin America but I'll leave there for now, all this to say that we are no different than say the US when it comes to how we view blacks south of the border, sure we're not killing them or denying them their rights, I happen to think blacks get along with whites better in Latin American compared to how they're treated in the US and Europe but it's undeniable that there is a bias and as a result blacks still get mistreated in Latin America 🙋🏻♂️

Simplest answer: Black population in Brazil: 6,2% pure afrodescent, 39,1% mulato, total = 45,3% Black population in Uruguay: 8,1% [2011] Black population in Argentina: 0,4% [2010]
Longer answer: Yes, there was a larger percentage of black people back on the days of Spanish Colony. It is unclear why it decreased with time. Probably war and epidemics. However, in 1850, Argentine population was roughly of 1,000,000 people. Between 1862 and 1940 6,6 millon inmigrants (mostly white Europeans) came to Argentina. So the incidence of European inmigration was decisive.

Slight correction, Argentina abolished slavery in 1813 not 1853. In 1853 we adopted our first Constitution in which it was set into law that all people born on Argentine soil are free. And whilst the video does its best to summarize the afro-argentine experience, it's quite lacking in some areas, as for instance the understanding of race relations in Latin America in general. Let me preface this by saying that in no way am I condoning or agreeing with these statements, but they're based on the historical understanding of the time periods. Argentina, or at that time the Vice Royalty of the River Plate, was more of a backwoods hold out for the Spanish crown to hold off against French and British interests in the region. The vast majority of the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade ended up going to Brazil (whom as a note only abolished slavery in 1888), and Argentina received a small fraction of it. I do wholeheartedly agree that after manumission was declared in 1813 the vast majority of black slaves in Argentina (or the United Provinces in that time period) were forcibly conscripted into the Liberation Armies as front-line cannon-fodder soldiers, and that's where you see the biggest dip in the Afro-Argentine population, followed by the War of the Triple Alliance. Compound to this the unfortunate decision to exterminate the Southern native tribes in what was known as the Desert Campaign of the 1860's, and the influx of European immigration that had it's peak from around the 1870's to the 1890's, and you have the perfect conditions for developing a nation that would identify strongly with its European roots than other nations in Latin America. One thing that is important to note is that the concept or race in Argentina was secondary to that of social class: call it a leftover of the Catholic Spanish way of running things, it is why the color of your skin in Argentina plays a secondary role to your place in society. And while it's true that later on Argentina had the typical view of race mainly shaped by the ideas of 19th Century Europe, there was a more sui generis approach to our understanding of it. This is why we don't distinguish our European ancestry by regionality: Spanish, Italian, German, French, Russian, Turkish, we don't have the anglocentric concept of hyphenating our national identity (ie: African-American, Italian-American, etc) and thus our views on what you would call race-relations (if you can even call it that) have a different approach than they do in the anglocentric nations. Hope this cleared up some misconceptions and I welcome any questions or discussions. :)
Really! Does this make you feel better! 1813 vs 1853 or 1888! The same story where ever and when ever this race goes! Full stop! Period! Then write revisionist/confusionist history!

Argentina's population was 36% black in 1816 when it became a nation. Shortly after independence, the white population went on an ethnic cleansing of the black population. While a large number of blacks were killed, another portion of the population got married into white families in order to acquire higher social privilege. Even though a lot of Argentine may not look black or identify as black, a large number of them have african dna in their blood. Complexion and ethinicity are not the same.
It's the Italian immigrants of Argentina that contributed a lot on it's football. Di Stefano, Zanetti and Messi are of Italian descent, among many others. Plus Argentina sent most of it's black population to Brazil.
Football was mainly introduced because of the british railways, most clubs today were founded by railway workers and have anglo names. Although it's true that overall european immigration contributed a lot to it spreading so much.

A lot of the data in this video is misleading or just plain wrong.... Argentina wasn't a "major part of the slave trade", there was barely anyone living in the Rio de la Plata back then. It was a forgotten backwater of the Spanish Empire. Sure, 30% of the population was black in 1810, but the population back then was only 500 thousand people! Add in the fact that 7.5 million European immigrants arrived in the following century (second largest recipient after the USA), and the fact that slavery and the slave trade were abolished very early (1812), and you can see how the black population of 150 thousand (30% of 500k) got dilluted due to that huge migratory wave of Europeans. 0.4% of the population today identifies as black, and genetic testing shows 7% has some black genes (such as that goalkeeper you mention), so it's all perfectly explained in the current demographics of the country. It's true that black people died in disproportionate numbers during the war in Paraguay, and that they were discriminated against during the 19th century, but to talk about genocide here is nonsense. You can bet that if there had been an organized ethnic cleansing campaign there would be historical evidence for it. A lot of this simply stems from not understanding statistics and Latin American demographics. 30% sounds like a lot, but it was a very tiny population that got overwhelmed by immigrants. There was no "one drop rule" here as in the British colonies. And again, 150 thousand black people got 7.5 million european immgrants dumped on top of them. So that explains how those genes got dilluted. Finally, that "97% identifies as white" is bullshit, that's some CIA estimate, Argentina doesn't keep tabs on the race of each citizen like you do in America or Britain. AFAIK, the national census doesn't ask about your race. Edit: Also, the first Argentine President Bernardino Rivadavia was part Black. 200 years before Obama. I can even go as far as to say that this video, full of lies and misinformation, is an attack to Argentines, as it blatantly lies about the reality of the country, hides information, and takes wrong assumptions as facts, like comparing the background of Brazil, when the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarve used to have colonies in Africa, to that of Hispanic America, when no country there or even Spain had access to African slaves, because Spain only had small colonies in Northern Africa (and even smaller when compared to the size of those of Brazil/Portugal, France, England and even Belgium), populated by Arabic people, that had even invaded Spain itself in the past

If the video was objective, it would be just informative, but comparing the past of Argentina, a Spain colony to that of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarve, that had its own colonies in Africa, is just purposefully lying to hide reality: Spain did not have colonies in Black Africa, that's the main reason why Hispanic America doesn't have much black people. You are wrong about the term "negro" it can mean a huge number of things depending on the context. it can have negative intent but most of the time it does not... my family in Argentina is half Arab and half Italian and they use this word all the time without any negative intentions. saying "mi negro" a lot of the time means my friend and is a very loosely used term almost like saying "dude" in the US. not only Argentinians use the word in this way. Uruguayans, Chileans, Paraguayans etc. use it as well.
the US afro people came up with the idea not to use it because since they do not speak any languages they did not know what it meant, they just decided that it meant to label people who were enslaved, someone wrote a book I'm not your Negro so since then they decided they want it to strike it from being used in the US and they asserted they want it to call themselves Black rather than negro, and then 20 years later they decided to call themselves Afro-Americans. Smokey Robinson a Black singer announced on TV that he does not want to be called afro american because he has never been to Africa and has no intentions of setting foot there, he stated he wants to be called Black because of his link to Texas.
@@teresaguerrrasalazar4964 The US hyphenates all non-germanic ethnicities, you have lots of African-American, Italian-American, Asian-American, but not one Swedish-American, Belgian-American or even British-American. People of all skin tones and backgrounds call each other negro in a friendly manner here in Argentina. They also use the term "gordo" a lot which translates to fatty. Imagine being in a place like the U.S or U.K and you hear someone call you "hey fatty!" or "hey blackie!" , many people would take offense to this. But not here in Argentina, its culturally distinct. My mom often calls my dad negro and he often calls her gorda. Hes white and shes as skinny as a twig.
Soccer is just short for "Association Football", and the word was invented in Britain. There are a good few different types of football. In USA, the main type played is actually American Football, so they call Soccer Soccer to avoid confusion. USA aren't the only ones... the real question is, why do Brits (amd other countries) get so uptight about it!

I have a sister historian and once she's gave me that explanation about of none black people in Argentina. Excellent video! I'm Brazilian and I have to say, through the years I saw a lot of racisms cases on soccer in games against Brazilian and Argentines. I think one of my nostalgics and good memories on soccer was the Velez Sarsfield from 94. That team was fantastic! They played Boca, Cruzeiro, Palmeiras... All clubs more traditional and the players never looked nervous playing under pressure. Aways playing a really good football. After that through the years I saw so many racisms cases liked a said before and I start to desliked the argentines, overall. The last decade I think was the best years about relationship between Brazilian and Argentines. Messi aways said how the brazilians helped him on the barcelona and maybe people outside of Brazil and Argentina don't know how específic the relationship between Messi and Ronaldinho, that friendship was important for that. My Brazilian team had a great argentine player from the Velez, Lucas Pratto and in 2014 I went to Buenos Aires and one thing I did was visited the El fortin, Velez Stadium. I went there with my GALO Ronaldinho Shirt and literally everybody was talk with me, some guys was trying to buy my shirt or trading in other shirts, was crazy! The Velez Sarsfield Store, when I went there, the whole staff came to me and we was talking about football. I think was more than one hour and the guys was talking so passionate about the brazilians players and I about the argentines. They gave me a discount on shirt, gifts... One of the best days a ever and I'm not sure if that day would be possible in 10 or 15 years ago.

You should make a video about how the portuguese immigrants club Vasco da Gama opened the doors to black and poor players in brazilian football. It's a great history. Until the decade of 1920s, football was an elite sport in Brazil and non whites and poor people weren't allowed to play (at least in the top teams). Vasco was the first club to allow them and gain a top league trophy (Vasco won Rio de Janeiro championship in its debut year in the first division in 1923). The following year the club was kicked out of the league for refusing to expel 12 players as the other clubs demanded (the episode is known as the "historical answer" and is a milestone in the history of combating racism in Brazil).

Simplest answer:
Black population in Brazil: 6,2% pure afrodescent, 39,1% mulato, total = 45,3%
Black population in Uruguay: 8,1% [2011]
Black population in Argentina: 0,4% [2010]
Longer answer:
Yes, there was a larger percentage of black people back on the days of Spanish Colony.

Thank you for the additional info! Certainly helps to show the whole picture

Seems like a big fact you ommited because it doesn't fit the narrative you are trying to create.
You seem to be hiding something with all this garbage.

The country was dismembered we didn't have any president or higher authority that was really respected so the other provinces didn't want anything to participate on the war. What a fine mix of a woman who is of African decent aswell as Argentinian, that to me sounds perfect as I find Argentinian women beautiful and I really like Black women just as equally. I can imagine the figure she would have with the mix of both genes, my fantasy definitely.

The low black population in this country is, among other reasons, due to the high black infant mortality rates in the mid-19th century.
By the beginning of the 20th century, 30% of the Argentine population was immigrant.
Take into account that European immigration (Italians, Spanish, Germans, Slavs) explained more than half of the growth of the Argentine population in the mid-20th century.
I love the way you speak up on so many things without bias. Big up you Alfie, you're a real one.
maybe next topic should be why Nigeria has no Vietnamese players? Or why China has no Hispanic players? Just a thought
Or why is there no black player in some teams in most places. Geeezus this maybe old but all these woke questions really need to go. Their urge for quotas are really starting to make other people despise woke stuff even more.

The segregational hyphen is a privilege reserved for those whose ancestors didn't natively speak a Germanic language

Hes white and shes as skinny as a twig.

why usa insist to calling football as "soccer"?
Soccer is just short for "Association Football", and the word was invented in Britain. There are a good few different types of football. In USA, the main type played is actually American Football, so they call Soccer Soccer to avoid confusion. USA aren't the only ones... the real question is, why do Brits (amd other countries) get so uptight about it!
Why are there no white players playing for Japan?
Because they lost the war, and after WW2, there was a mass amount of protests!! It's documented. Japanese players from the J league, wanted a pure Nippon team, that help them win the world cup.
They will soon

African does not mean black
Yes, black woman due to cultural pressure went out of their way to breed with lighter skinned or white europeans. One of the many contributing factors to why people feel awkward about being black in that country.
@@Isuckatgames No it doesn't, but the context here is presumably people of black African heritage who were transported over to South America as slaves.
If everybody had a DNA test this whole race problem could go away... pretty much everybody, ESPECIALLY those in the New World, are mixed to some degree.
You missed Roberto Telch who played for Argentina in the early 70s. Clearly he has Africa roots.

Argentina and Brazil are closer than you can imagine. In plenty of ways.
We are both pretty chill countries. Sometimes football gets violent and politicians spice things up, sadly.
VAR SIL, SIL! Just kidding haha. So

The substitute goalkeeper for Argentina in the 1978 World Cup was black, his name is Baley. He was the last black player that the Argentine team had. Most of the black players who play in Argentina are foreigners. There are very few black and Argentine players, in the future there will surely be them and descendants of immigrants who have entered our country in recent years. Best regards.
Chocolaté Balley! I remember him well.
He must've lost his start to Fillol, because a lot of team photos from '77-'78 are with Balley.

Could you kindly explain, Mr. expert, as to why you dispute his sources? You are quite vague and nebulous in your critique! What part of his video do you have issues with? Do you wish to white-wash Argentina and spuriously claim that they did not participate in the slave trade? Or there was a substantive Black population until the nation's political leaders made a conscious decision to import Europeans to Argentina to make the nation whiter? You are entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts...
@@nounnoun My doubt came with the section of the word "negro". It sickens me how a man that does not live here and doesnt know our culture has the audacity to pretend he knows how we talk, the word negro is so versatile that we use it in many kind ways, and also you can use it in a mean way if you want to. But you have to add a negative adjective next to it, doesnt it happens to every word? Its not like the American or brittish N-word. they try to adjudicate their poblems to us. Like the Cavani incident, he saluted a friend in twitter that his nickname was "negro" and the Premier League penalized him. I mean, if you think that word is bad who is the racist? If you dont live here and know our culture, shut the fuck up
Referring to Maradona as white is totally incorrect. His heritage is southern Italian and Guarani (native South American).
Yeah i was gonna say. Theres plenty of argentines with amerindian decent, they make up 20-30% of the total gene pool for them according to genetic studies.

The following year the club was kicked out of the league for refusing to expel 12 players as the other clubs demanded (the episode is known as the "historical answer" and
is a milestone in the history of combating racism in Brazil). Pelé is openly a Vasco fan since his childhood and says that Vasco opened his door in football.
the correct question is : why should they?
The best starting eleven but you’re only allowed one player from each league
Y por que deberíamos tenerlos? El caso no es el color de piel, sino la calidad del jugador.
