    I am from Bangladesh. 🇧🇩
Been supporting Argentina since 98 when I watched Batistuta score a hat trick against Jamaica. It's hard to explain in words what it meant for me when finally the team I've been supporting for all these years finally became the world champion. After all the tragedies (that's how it felt to me) in the previous world cups, I was beginning to think that Argentina will always remain one of football's tragic nations. But thank God for making me believe again. It's like a mountain has been shifted from my chest and I am ever grateful to God for that. I can tell from the people around me of my generation that support Argentina, they feel exactly the same way. It's like we can start over again. We don't have to be bogged down by the weight of the serial tragedies and underachievements anymore. There's fairness in this world after all. Argentina is not just a football team to us, it's indeed a feeling. We feel it the same way in Buenos Aires and thousands of kilometers away in Dhaka. The physical distance means nothing. The language of love and passion for Argentina remains the same. Vamos Argentina!!! ❤️

I'm from Nepal but like my father I'm an Argentina national team fan and because I fell in love with football bacause of Messi,I have even more strong emotional connection with Argentina.
Here in Nepal,Argentina is the most supported NT, Brasil is 2nd.
Only Argentines and Argentina fans can understand how we lived through all the heartbreaks throughout the years and the fact that this was going to be Leo's last chance made it so nervy and tense you cannot imagine.
Messi lifting the WC means football is completed for me and lots of people in the world. Of course being a Barca fan I want my club to not get bankrupt(which was a possibility) and win lots of trophies but even if we don't win anything,I won't complain that much because Messi won the world cup.

I come from the southern part of India. In a country where cricket is the most popular sports, my state Kerala stands out. The scene is crazy. Brazil and Argentina dominate. Massive cut-outs of Messi and Neymar pop up in every small towns and even in villages. This year even in the middle of a river. There has been bizarre incidents like brides and grooms appearing in the colours of the Argentinian and Brazilian jerseys. People need something to celebrate. There's a primitive tribal feeling of unity and belonging when you are passionate about a team. I think football in many parts of the world is there in the roots of existence.

@@desmondachocky537 a lot of historical reasons. Kerala was a very poor state in India when we got independence. So communism grew here in Kerala. Our first elected government was communist. So because of that Latin America and Kerala have a lot in common. The second reason was British considered cricket a royal game while football was for the common man. So Kerala people used to play football with the British police. The other reason is when television got popular in Kerala. They probably saw Maradona's magic in the 1986 world cup and Maradona was communist. Then we got Batistuta, requilmy, Sorin, Ayala, Aimar, masche, Crespo, DiMaria, Jun, Tevez & the goat himself MESSI. So from that moment on Kerala and Argentinas's story was a romantic story.

It was heartbreaking to see Argentina get so close to finals but not lift the trophy in my lifetime. I saw Argentina here in US losing the Copa America final in 2016…It was 3 finals lost in a row. Heartbreak after heartbreak we finally lifted the Copa in 2021 and Finally the biggest prize of All the World Cup this year. My Futbol life is now complete witnessing Argentina and Messi lift this most coveted trophy. If Argentina plays with my home country Ethiopia, I will still support Argentina.

Being from Nepal, most of the people who love football that belong to my father's generation are Argentina fans as they fell in love with football after they watched the '86 WC. It was the first WC to be broadcast on TV in Nepal. I fell in love with football after watching the '98 WC when I was awed by R9. But beginning with the rise of LM with barcelona esp. after the 05/06 season I wanted LM10 & Arg to lift that gold trophy. But man, I never thought during those days that I'd have to wait this long to experience that moment. 16 & half years of excruciating wait, near misses & pain since that dreadful evening in Berlin when LM was never put on the field to showcase the world the legend it will see grow over the next one & half decade the pain has been ever present.
And after WC 2014 & before CA 2021 it felt that people like me will have our dream of seeing LM lift that gold trophy incomplete for the rest of our lives & die with that fact. But boy, has the wait, pain, heartaches & near-misses been worth it with the beauty, magic & art produced on the pitch like no other, the emotional roller coaster like no other, a finale like no other, the storyline & script like no other, a footballing career like no other, a life like no other.
Football has now been complete for me. I can happily retire from watching football now & die a happy man. Felicidades & Gracias Argentina 🇦🇷 & Leo Messi 🙏. Love from Nepal 🇳🇵

Sebastian, as an Argentinian let me congratulate you for this extraordinary piece. I think you nailed it in many ways, especially through the both simple and deep insights of Marcela Mora y Araujo. Yes, our culture is built up upon hardship and suffering, and tango is notably a musical mixture of melancholy and nostalgia, and the same could be said about other Argentine folkloric music genres, like zambas or bagualas. We crave for deliverance from all that grief that runs through our history. Our mythic drama is to overcome extremely painful defeats. That's why the most popular song of the World Cup evokes right in its third verse "the boys from the Falklands whom I will never forget". And a little later puts that dreadful war on the same level as "all the final matches we lost, for so many years I cried because of them". That's how we feel about winning a World Cup: elation, retribution, relief, catharsis, poetic justice, divine compensation. It is a complex dramatic structure, curiously validated (or amplified) by fact --just review at the all the six final World Cup matches we played: no matter if we won or lost, those were utterly dramatic, epic, hard fought, hard lost or hard won.
As you very well know, a narrative is a powerful way of transmitting values, ideas, symbols, hopes, the stuff of myth. For many nations, including Argentina, football provides such a narrative on an immediate and massive level, that no other phenomenon can match. Yes, it would be nice to send rockets to the Moon, to have a powerful and wholesome economy, to live in a well-structured and equitative society, to be recognized as a major geopolitical player... but while all of that is, alas, beyond our current possibilities... oh man, it will be nice to be World Champions for these next four years --at least.
Thanks for your perspective. Hope you enjoyed the event as well! Cheers!

Encima los forros de los milicos terminan subestimando a los yankies porque pensaron que no se iban a meter y le dieron todo el apoyo a los ingleses.

The penalty win was voted the greatest sporting moment in our nations history, despite football not having the popularity of native sports. That shootout had a tv audience of more than 2 million, when the population in 90 was 4 million.
    The power of football

¡Vamos Argentina!

In South America it's a bit more than that - It's a huge trace of popular culture and identity, especially in Argentina and Brazil.

I was born in Argentina but I live in Chile for the last 36 years (I’m 50), I also lived 1,5 years in Germany, so I think I might give my explanation why football it is that important in Argentinas life. First of all football it is the most important sport by far in the entire South America (with the exception of Venezuela which baseball it is as popular), every corner of South America has some football in it. Nevertheless, there is two aspects of Argentina (and Uruguay) life that might give the explanation why in this two countries football it is even more popular that not only South America, but also the rest of the world. Sports in Argentina are very important, when you meet somebody for the first time you ask name, what do you do for living and what sport do you practice, and if you check the history of the country, Argentina has been very prolific in sports, especially team sports. Basketball, Padel Tennis, Football, Polo, Rugby, Handball, among others are very popular in Argentina and have been source of great pride in the amount of trophies they had archived. But there is a even much bigger reason why Football is so popular, Argentina people used to be very focus on family ties, we meet every single Sunday, the entire family celebrate everything for whatever reason a meeting with all members invited and all involved in this reunion, so family it is a huge milestone in any Argentinian life. But this family ties are no only with your relatives, are also to your friends, your classmates, your working partners, everyone which is somehow related with you has the chance to be part of your very strong network of persons, like a team. This is totally the opposite way of life in comparison to most other countries in the world that are more focus on an individualistic way of life. And this specific Argentinian way of living it is something that every Argentinian family used to passed on to the next generation. When any group of Argentinian are trying to win any world tournament in any sports, the entire nation will join and support them, no matter how, but they will. They can spend a couple of year of working salaries paying flights, accommodation, and expenses in order to be there and support. It is the way Argentinians express their patriotism, emotions and way of life. This is also true even in music, just watch some rock concert from Argentina, even with bands from abroad (check ACDC for example), and you will see the same fanatism involved, we really express our feeling for what we love or admire, when we love something it is part of our life, it is part of our family.

It's been three and a half decades of shattered dreams and disillusionment since. But this year, things were different. Our Selección had a nickname - La Scaloneta - which was unheard of. And if that weren't enough, the nickname wasn't derived from the superstar but rather the coach. The team taught us all to persevere, to work as a team, to have each other's backs, and to put the common goal ahead of personal aspirations.

Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing your experience. I was born in Argentina but I've been living outside the country since 2002. Football is engraved in the culture as much or even more than a religion. I don't exaggerate if I say that you are born as a football fan depending on which club your family supports. It creates bonds and gaps as nothing else. Football news is not just a segment in the news, it's usually the biggest headliner Monday through Sunday. People debate more about football than politics or any other relevant topic. Sometimes it's also a tool for manipulation because football has a powerful impact on the Argentinean population. Football is a strong path for public figures to later get involved in politics. AFA is a huge corporation. It's a powerful force and its leadership is usually beyond the rules that are valid for everyone else. Football is a 24/7 presence in everyone's lives. When it comes to the Argentina national team, it is an equalizer that generates a kind of passion that unites poor and rich, kids and elders, men and women. Everybody is white and blue. I live in the US and can assure you that there is nothing here even close to what football is to Argentina. In fact, as far as I know, no other country has anything like that. I've never been a big football fan. However, I can tell you that each time Argentina won the World Cup were the happiest days of my life. In other words "I can't explain it to you because you won't understand it... Muchachos..." 🎵🎵🎵🎵

You need to know about Messi: a giant of football, and a humble person. For many years he played and succeded in Europe. We are very proud of him.
But he couldn't win with our national team. He loves Argentina and truly wanted to win the World Cup.
He decided to quit this team after some faillures but he came back, supported by every argentinian. And along with a great group of partners, and a humble but talented coach, they started to win.
So everybody wanted to win the World Cup because Messi and this group were so inspiring and Messi deseeved it after so many years.
That's one of the reason of this craziness about winning the World Cup.

True...the messi factor is huge! It explains the almost religious fanaticism...his very last chance to win a world cup!!! In the bigger picture though I can't help that it doesn't really make that much sense. He is a great player, never personally let Argentina down...just didn't have the right circumstances ( until now) to realistically win a cup ( or 2)...and he did it when not at his best ( although he had a great tournament but the effort he put in was incredible. He was on a mission for sure! )
