Hi Herbert, greetings from the U.K. Great to see Sandy on top form here. I too am an engineer, and 58yo. Sandy is just so experienced and competent in the automotive field. For years I have pondered the obsession with remaining at 12v for car electrical systems; early combustion cars had 6v systems, but the arrival of the electric starter motor put an end to that ‘standard’ because at 6v you couldn’t get the power for the motor to crank a combustion engine without massive cables and a huge amperage battery capacity; which would fry itself internally. The car industry could have saved itself a fortune by moving to 48v back in the 70’s, it’s not just cable thickness, but also relays. At 12v you need relays to handle the current (amperage) for car electrics like wiper motors, blower motors, rear window heaters, electric windows. However at 48v, many of these features can be operated by the dashboard switch itself because the current (amperage) drops by a factor of 4, reducing the wiring loom and complexity even more. Another big advantage of a 48v system is the strain on the battery to cold crank engine is much reduced, also if you love your music, a sound system can be much better with a 48v feed.

I think Herbert is confusing the un-boxed model with the new Cybrtrk manufacturing method. Tesla had to use a new manufacturing technology for the Cybrtrk because of the exoskeleton-like design of the Cybrtrk. New manufacturing machines were needed to make the folds in the steel exoskeleton structure, but the overall linear or serial manufacturing process is roughly the same as the way all cars are currently produced. The un-boxed manufacturing process is a modular, parallel manufacturing and assembly process.

There seems general agreement that CT pioneered a lot of new technology and approaches that enable the Model 2.
It’s also likely that many of the CT assembly techniques will also apply to M2.
I don’t know how much stainless steel cost can be reduced once you relax the “bulletproof” requirement. However, in low-income countries and market segments, a durable vehicle body would be a strong advantage.
Regardless, the stainless steel processing innovations could probably be applied to other metals possibly even composites.

Sandy, The trap is 48 VDC. Once you make the commitment, there is no going back. The same is true for first principles, castings, poka yoke design, melding design and engineering, humanoid bots, and unboxed assembly.
Based upon your cybertruck factory tour, do you think the breaks in the automated production line were designed to accomodate a humanoid robot?
Humanoid robots in the factory have considerable idle processing time. Why not use the idle time to do on the line QA?
The fractal nature of unboxed assembly is perfect for minimizing mass motion which reduces energy consumption and production costs. Segments can be duplicated to bring the slowest steps down to achieve optimum production speed vs cost.
PS: What is a gas station? You mean they sold explosive flammable fluids to the public from pumps. I thought static electricity can explosively ignite gasoline vapor. I heard it used to cause thousands of gas station fires per year.

The unbox system will allow for automation of the assembly of wiring harnesses and increase the run rate to less than 30 seconds, something a person would struggle with. Unboxing allows the engineer to orient the assembly so they are not fighting gravity, this is big. What is unclear to me is how to join all the sub-assemblies and assure structural integrity, I have no doubt that it is clear to the Tesla Engineers.

Imagine if you will ..... A World where cars had ALWAYS been electric. Now someone comes along and tries to convince you that the way forward is to
    (1) Pour 12 Gallons of highly flammable liquid into a tank, just behind where your kids sit.
    (2) Replace the single spinning rotor with 4,6, or 8 heavy pistons that compress and explode the flammable liquid 100 times every second + a thousand other frantically moving metal parts.
    (3) The pistons travel vertically, creating huge loads on a shaft that runs 90 degrees horizontally, then that shaft also has a 90 degree change of direction to the drive wheels.
    (4) the engine runs at extreme temperatures and loads, and so requires coolant (with anti-freeze of course) plus various types of oils throughout the drivetrain.
    (5) .... I mean, what did I miss? Oh yes....
    (6) Timing belts/chains, to ensure that the pistons don't smash into the valves and destroy the whole engine in a millisecond.
    (7) A regular and expensive service to ensure all that complexity is lubed and adjusted.
    (8) The pleasure of pumping gas at a greasy, oily, smelly, gas station every week (and handing over a hundred bucks or whatever for the privilege).
How could you ever possibly ever float that concept, unless the only alternative was 19th century horse-drawn buggies?

I like listening to Sandy. Unfortunately he is wrong about hydrogen. Even if it’s limitless and renewable, it is not clean-burning. It has significant NOx emissions (though I don’t think this is an issue with fuel cells). It also has global warming impact as its fugitive emissions slow the breakdown of methane. Even if it were an easily managable fuel (it’s not) it isn’t clean.

I read in several places that since Hertz like all rental companies finances its cars based in part on the residual value, ie the amount they get when they sell it to the secondary market, that they miscalculated, they couldn't get as much as expected because Tesla was constantly cutting the price of new cars (a good thing!) So new ones were competing with used ones. Hertz didn't deny it. I also read that Hertz was running its Tesla fleet to 100, 000 miles whereas they usually sold ICE cars at 20,000 miles. Don't know if that's true but it was a reasonably credible source. Not sure how that would impact their decision. I never heard Elon comment.

    • @azscott
      @azscott 7 месяцев назад +1

Maybe it’s because car rental companies have predictable lifecycles for ICE cars. By the time you get past the cheapo maintenance items like oil changes, brake pads, windshield wipers into the big-ticket items like new seals/gaskets, alternators, starters etc. that car is on it’s way to Mannheim, or some other third-party auctioneer. Teslas can go a million miles, sure, but everything that CAN break is a big-ticket item: expensive low-profile tires, suspension components, batteries that some idiot ran down to zero… I wonder if folks who are inclined to rent a Tesla have a larger-than-average percentage of “drive it like you stole it” tendencies? Maybe the bean-counters at Hertz just can’t wrap their heads around how to craft actuarial tables for EVs, so they just decide to throw up their hands and cut their losses. Going to be a world of hurt when EVs are, say 50% of the market, and suddenly no one wants to rent an ICE car anymore. Disruptive tech eats short-term thinking for breakfast, lunch and dinner 😅

      @@azscott
I don't know if I'd say the "cheapo maintenance items" are really that cheap.
It still takes expensive manpower and downtime to change oil, brake pads, and other items.
Hertz could easily restrict the "drive it like ya stole it" behaviors just by changing the setting that restricts speed to the posted speed limit. I believe that is keycode protected so users can't defeat it to drive however they want. Low profile tires are on the performance models. I don't know that Hertz would want performance models over the long range, but they certainly didn't need them. Just go with a long range, and choose the smaller tire size with the larger sidewall. Those have a less bumpy ride anyway.
I'm getting a new X in March and I went with the smaller tire size. I have the performance Y already and I wish I'd have gotten the smaller tires on it. You get a little extra range and a little smoother ride quality. Going over railroad tracks or potholes is brutal in the Y.

Scherr did not get rid of Tesla rentals because of maintenance costs - contrary "“The reality of EVs and Tesla’s being the best-selling car will, at some point, render them the best rental car.” Scherr.
German rental car company Sixt said in December it was selling its fleet of Teslas "as part of our regular de-fleeting process".
It still plans to offer a range of electrified vehicles and "stick to our goal to electrify 70-90 percent of our rental fleet in Europe by 2030".
The decision was based on the increased costs of crash repair from Uber drivers who drive their rentals hard for long hours in dense urban traffic, the higher cost to customers renting an EV from Hertz and the high depreciation on resale after two years as Tesla continues to drive down costs. Hertz never bought the 100 000 Teslas they used in their PR and had no contract for that from Tesla. They have had three CEOs in recent times and appear rudderless.
