The USA is arguably the most religious democracy in the western world, while Denmark is arguably the least. Will the situation remain this way? Will Denmark stay relatively irreligious, or will religion start to grow stronger in the years ahead? This lecture argues that Danes will remain secular in the years ahead, and perhaps even come to see religion as part of the problem in the world -- the USA included -- rather than part of the solution.

did he ever consider the fact that it might be the USA that will change towards what Denmark is doing. more and more people are beginning to think rationally and logically. which means more atheists will come. atheism is slowly rising in the USA. so i think that that's what's going to happen

The destruction of the welfare state and the eroding presence of communities in Denmark will lead to higher rates of religiosity.

You do get free coffee etc. In Danish church... But you get the same benefits in non-religious communities like housing unions that are supposed to be non-profit by law anyway... Try again. And read up on our community stuf. I'd recommend that you start with almennyttige boliger.. has nothing to do with religion.. just human decency.

Denmark is never gonna be a religious country. We are to smart for that. And not only that, though most of us are athiest, we know history and church is still a part of denmark., its our culture, but we know how to seperate that. As one time, its was Odin and Thor, that was our religion, and we never casted that away either.

Neither, im a athiest/agnostic, but. I do understand, that we have religion in denmark, but we also know how to seperate that from state, so the religion has no power, the people dose, in democracy.
Religion should not have to deside the faith of another person/country. It should be private and preached for thouse who seek inlightment of peace. Not of war.. And often religion is used for that, and end in war..
You have a good day :)

TeggyGoneMad What means you celebrate baptism and Christmas and Easter holiday nor believe in Christianity

    • @TeggyGoneMad
      @TeggyGoneMad 9 лет назад +1

alkis kosh Well, first of all, christmas is not somthing christians created, and easter is and pagan holliday.
We dont go to church, instead we eat a lot of food, and celebrate the light. As we did, before christians ever came to our country old nordic mytholic but ofcause today, christmas is a mix betwen defrent religions and cultures. And ofcause there is danish people who still go to church on christmas.
But, yes we celebrate easter and christmas, and im sure some danish people celebrate baptism.
Anyways, let me explain it, as there many athiest or agnostic who still pay church taxes, cause we like to look at the churches, and we understand, that it use to be a part of our culture there for we still pay.. If person asked for money to there moske, i would gladly help, if i understod, that this would be used for good in the moske. You understand

alkis kosh I will do my best to answer all your comments in one..
Christmas in danish is called Jul, stemming from the old norse world Yule.. Which is the celebration of the return of the sun (winter solstice).. Most danes don't celebrate the birth of Jesus, but a combination of family, tradition, good food, presents and the winter solstice..
The same goes for christenings.. I am a strong atheist even in danish terms.. But my future children are going to get christened.. Just because of one word.. Tradition! My father was christened in a christening robe made out of my grandmothers wedding dress, along with all of his siblings.. And every descendant of them has since been christened in that same robe.. And I am not going to break that tradition..
And as for the "jante lov".. It can be explained much simpler than the article you are linking to.. Of course you are allowed to make it for yourself.. I don't know of any dane who has something against the family behind LEGO.. The only think that matters in the "jante lov" is that you are not a dick (or Kanye) about it... :)

Christianity is a build-in part of many laws in Denmark. The welfare-system is called socialistic by americans, but in fact it is older than socialism and communism. It is based on christian values and partly remains from the viking-age - just read the Islandic Sagas. We feel that death-penalty is wrong - again a christian value, that are built in in our laws. In US you talk a lot about praying and going to church, but it is only on the outside. You wont make any restrictions on guns, even if it is one of the ten amendments.

I don't think any of this is true. And I dont see Denmark as being civilized, sensible and advanced because of what ?? Denmarks is an insane state, with a state and bureaucracy that runs everything and is worse than any religion. It reminds me more of a disphunctional cult. " But we dont have any cults in Denmark. Everything is so nice and civilized and sensible." And we love to show this facade to the US, and when americans buy the story af shangrila. Its a dead seal!

@@signe8321 I feel a bit similar, though it could also be worse. Whenever americans talk about the great things of Denmark like healthcare and social security, i always get the feeling that they are completely blind to the realities. Many people don't get the care that they need, it is all an illusion, and there are bureaukratic traps everywhere, especially in some regions like Copenhagen. If you look at the culture of todays yourth in Denmark, their choice of music, it is all real cynical and depressing gangster rap. On the contrary, in America there is real social security, and most people are generous. I have also been to Britain though, where i felt very unsafe some places , and i would say that i prefer Denmark. In the end each country has their own benefits and drawbacks.

Phil Zuckerman, you're really making me mad. It's as if you want us back to the Stone Age. Denmark was born and baptized over a thousand years ago in Jelling by Harald Bluetooth. Our Lutheran beliefs have retained many of our customs from the Viking Age. We are a very proud people. We trust each other and our social welfare society. What you find in faith in God, we find woven into our culture and extra curricuative activities. We have a community you only can pray for in your church, and if Bernie Sanders were to suggest such a community, you would want him crucified again. You're so totally blind that you can not see it. But you have certainly felt it. It takes a long and hard job as a foreigner to be integrated and become a Dane.
