      @@KomBackHordz I agree. I have a 2006 Volvo S60 T5 geartronic auto. It had 77,060 miles when I signed the papers in November of 2015. It now has 159k something and it's getting a full restore. do88 intercooler, OE radiator, Hutchinson OES engine mounts, FAG wheel bearings (sadly SKF was another $60 per bearing, so I couldn't swing them), Lemföroder front lower control arms rear control arm bushings, AND outer tie rods, Meyle HD front lower ball joints and brake hoses, OE oil cooler seals (sadly no Focus RS500 oil cooler though), Continental overflow and miscellaneous cooling hoses (50ft bulk roll for $22), Pierburg TCV, and finally a 3.5" to 3" catted exhaust with a Magnaflow 3" straight through round muffler. I already have new hood and trunk struts, Bilstein shocks and struts, and Motul ATF. Tell me I can't get another 14 years out of her. (And yes the Timing belt kit was done at 106k with an Aisin pump and Continental belt.)

      I owned an N reg 850 T5 auto. Picked up at 159000 miles, 1 owner from new who had always main dealership service and changed oil every 5000 to look after that engine and turbo. Even had main dealer receipts for bulb replacement 😂Anyway I continued the 5K oil changes and sold the car on with 260000 miles on the clock. Amazing engine 5 cylinder just nicer to drive/sound than a 4 cylinder shame Volvo ditched it no mount for all this emissions nonsense. Ok, the engine had an old smell and was smoking on boost when I sold it but that was honestly all and who could complain on those miles!!! Drivers seat had lots of wear by then, boot struts were shot and paint faded on the spoiler but that was it. Amazing I've not owned a BMW or Merc so don't know if any of their petrol engines last like that Volvo unit.

    Yeah I mean, the Volvo V90 looks nice but the 850 will ALWAYS be the best car ever made by Volvo. No one can beat the legendary 5 cylinder! When I see those RS3's from Audi, I think: this is not how a 5 cylinder should sound... The real 5 cylinder should have a nice manual gearbox and a turbo to mess with those BMW's! ;) I would leave that V90 for the 850 for sure!!

    Great comparison - the V90 only got the jump on the 850 due to the AWD traction, I did expect the 850 to reel the V90 back in a little from the standing start run but that V90 goes nicely! Has to be said that 850 sounds great though!

    • @Colin623
      @Colin623 Год назад +1

      At last a common sense comment, the truth is Mat didn't put the V90 into 'Sports Mode' which would of changed the outcome on the rolling start race, secondly, he deliberately put up a diesel against a petrol, why ? because he knew the diesel output is lower than the higher spec petrol version which would of trounced the 850 T5, the V90 hybrid engine which is a two litres petrol unit, produces 303 bhp even before the electric motor cuts in !
      Don't get me wrong I love the old 850, used to love watching them in the British Touring Car series, but times have changed, I've had a V70 P2 for 10 years, loved it, but it's way behind newer volvo's in refinement, safety and luxury, Volvo interiors have moved on so much over the last 10 years or so, and in my opinion look far better than the for-mentioned 850, which is basically a box on wheels, but a wonderful box with a wonderful engine !

    Turbo lag in the T5 850 in the stationary start, but with the rolling start afforded the 850 some RPM at the start, so little or no turbo lag. The compressed air in the D5 V90 gave it an advantage in the stationary start, but not in the rolling start.

    If you watch carefully you can see, the T-5 is not really slower than the new V90. After the massssssive turbo-lag disappers, the T-5 keeps a constant distance from the V90.

  • @ReferenceFidelityComponents

    I've onwed both an older S60D5 and a T5. The t5 was and remains a fantastic car. The s60 and v70 d5 had a major achilles heal. They ate half shaft joints which were £750 a pop. I needed two. They were also less reliable than the 850T5. The new dirsels are too complex and nowhere near as long lived as the older T5 petrol. All ghe evidence points to modern diesels being less reliable longer term and expensive in garage bills once you hit egr and dpf issues. Bring back the T5!

    If the turbo boost control is set a max. 6psi from the factory on the T5 of course it's easy to beat from the start. I have the same old wagon and I threw out the electronic turbo boost control valve (which opens the waste gate way too soon)... and replaced it by a manually adjustable boost control valve (from Turbo Smart). I can go up to 15psi (~1bar) of boost now. It's making a big difference when the turbo is kicking in.
