    also, if you're in the tri-state area, 93brand/Rollmore/BJJHQ/MMAHQ (They're the same entity) all have amazing flea markets randomly where full gi sets go for 35 dollars. Definitely a great way to pad a collection - last time i went I got a white standard issue 93 brand gi and a hyperfly starlyte gi for 35 bucks each

    Its interesting that your black/mint and white/olive hyperlyte fit differently. I have the white/olive and blue hyperlyte pants in A2 and they are both tapered, not bootcut like your black/mint ones. Maybe they changed the cut. The white/olive and also blue that I have are from the previous run, from 2016-2017. In early 2018 they updated the colors, which is your black/mint. Maybe the cut is also updated, even though the website doesn't say so.

    • @MichaelPhanBJJ
      @MichaelPhanBJJ  5 лет назад

      The white/olive is a reg hyperfly. The black/mint is hyperlyte. I’m assuming this is the reason for different fit. Which sucks since the biggest difference between the two is weight. Thanks for the comment!

    The most frustrating thing about martial arts gear is in the sizing especially if you're a big strong guy because they're all made for slender Asian frames. I'm 6ft tall 300lb with a 50" waist and only a couple products fit me but none of them wrap properly except ones I had to tailor down in height. All they do is up size the entire product... they don't make it for bigger stronger people so if I get a gi that fits me I have to tailor it down from the seven-foot-tall cut they deliver to your door because the ridiculous manufacturers just assume the same frame at the same standard dimensions rather than keeping it of average height/length and just making it bigger to accommodate a larger more powerful individual. When I was 350lbs I only had two gis that would fit and they were hard to find and exorbitantly expensive for what they were...Fuji 10 and MACS 12 (these were the largest commercial Gis available but of course they were cut for people who were 10 ft tall so they are comically long!

    I'm a little worried because the gi I got (*from the place I'm about to start at it) doesn't fit but I'm only 5'1 and the instructor said that it was ok because I will lose weight" and that "its too long on me with the bigger size so I need to have the smaller one" but this one doesn't really fit at all, I don't feel confident and its very tight.

    • @MichaelPhanBJJ

      I would get a gi that you like the fit of and then reassess later if you’ll need to get one of a smaller size.

    I've got 5 gis at the moment.
    Atama Mundial 9 in A2. Love the gi. Cant go wrong with Atama. My only issue is the top shrunk a bit to much. Probably can still sneak in ibjjf standard.
    Hayabusa Gorudo 1 and 2. Awesome gis but heavy as fuck. I like heavy and thick gis. They fit perfect both in A2.
    Hayabusa Marvel edition( the punisher). Awesome fit but had to get in A1 as the A2 was a bit too baggy. The bad is the pants. They say it is rip stop but is totally different of the atama mundial which is rip stop too.
    Last but not least, another Brazilian brand called OSS. Nice and light gi. Pants shrunk a bit a fits awesome the jacket is too long on sleeves.
    Just want to leave my 2 cents here in case people want to check other brands,
    cheers

    Hey, its me again ;). Recently I've saw the " Fuji Sekai 2.0 " BJJ Gi. Do you know that brand ? If yes, could you give me an advise ? Nevertheless, I still have a question for you : I'am 20 years old , weight : 87 kg and height : 177 cm . The Gi has the sizes A3 and A2 L . A2 L's specs are height : 181 cm - 183 cm and weight : 64 - 77 kg. A3 's are height : 180 cm - 186 cm and weight 77 - 91 kg. Well ... To be honest I don't have an idea how shrinking etc. will effect the Gi ... Can you help me ?

    • @MichaelPhanBJJ
      @MichaelPhanBJJ  5 лет назад +1

      I am not familiar with that specific gi from Fuji. According to the small amount of research I did, I think you’d be good with a A2H with your measurements. According to their site the GI can shrink a little even though it’s preshrunk. As long as it hasn’t been used, you can exchange it for a different size if the A2H isn’t a good fit. Good luck!

    • @MichaelPhanBJJ
      @MichaelPhanBJJ  5 лет назад

      It depends on what brand you’re looking at and how you like the gi to fit. A2 would probably be a little baggy for you with most brands. Look for brands that offer L sizes for example A1L. If something like that is a good fit but a little long you can go down to A1.
      As far as specific brands go, depends on your budget. 93 brand is a solid gi that’s on the lower end price wise. Hyperfly makes great gis that are a little more expensive but the fit is on point.

      I would say check out the size chart of the brand you like. With that budget, you have a lot of options for a good gi. If your measurements are on the high end of a particular size, I say get the next size up to give room for shrinkage after you wash. If you’re in the middle or lower end of the size, get that size vs going down a size. Does that make sense? So, if you fall in the lower end of a size, for instance, A2 - get the A2 vs going down to an A1.
      Also, what I would do is email the brand of the gi you want and let them know your measurements. They’ll be able to suggest a size much better than I can.

      It actually was shrunk accidentally before that tournament in the picture. When I initially got it it did fit perfectly, legal sleeve length and all

      @@MichaelPhanBJJ ah i see. Did you put it in the dryer, or did it shrink just from washing? I have a gi that has borderline too short sleeves currently and I'm terrified of it shrinking. Do you have any tips to prevent shrinking, or even enlarging a gi? Thanks

    • @MichaelPhanBJJ
      @MichaelPhanBJJ  4 года назад

      Dryer. I can only recommend washing cold and hang dry to prevent shrinking.

      @@MichaelPhanBJJ when you hang dry it, does it make a difference if you leave it out in the sun? Is it less likely to shrink if you don't leave it in direct sunlight, since it'll have less exposure to heat?

      I think the sun would help dry the gi faster. Not sure about shrinking
