Daniel Ibbertson it was a cool part of the video. Along with castlevania 2 another really great game that gets a really bad rap is grabbed by the ghoulsies easily my favorite game for the original Xbox and one I always dismissed until recently.
I actually loved this damn system when I had one as a kid. I actually had two because they were so cheap, but my mom sold them both on ebay when I was in the Army. Sigh.
I'm using the 3D effect on my 3DS, with the right depth it's really good and immersive on the 3DS XL. I think the New3DS is the best way to play it, because the screen adjusts the polarizer to your eye position.
As do I because you have to hold the device in the same position for long periods of time. It even goes against the design of games that use the gyroscope. Ocarina of Time looks great in 3D as long as you don't feel like aiming and shooting at something with your bow.
You don't have to hold it in the same position if you have the New 3DS, as it auto-adjusts for your viewing angle. As for Ocarina of Time, the trick is to move your body along with the system so you're still in front of the screen.
Back in the day, when Nintendo wisely disassociated itself with this..._thing_...at the drop of a hat, my local BlockBusters followed suit with a mega price buster sale on all VR merchandise. While some regional bloke drove to all branches to snatch every branch to buy up all the Virtual Boy's, my branch had two systems without the display boxes. So, I bought one and talked a friend into snatching the other. I also bought every game in stock. So...I bought every common game for the thing AND got the BlockBusters exclusives. Like a carry case, an actual A/C adapter (Nintendo cancelled out before the general store version was released.) and a couple other things. My friend commented that a long session (of about 30 minutes or so) with this was equal to slamming a whole 6-pack of beer and then trying to walk. What gaming device should do that??? What games did come out were all over the place in quality. Red Alarm was a ship shooter. Because of the limited colors, it was near impossible to tell where to go, at times. Nester's Bowling was...just bowling. Roll ball down 3-D alley. Hit pins. Mario's Tennis was...character Tennis. He's done better sports games, elsewhere. 3-D Tetris is beyond bad. How about Golfing...in all red. Or baseball. It doesn't add much. And I liked to mock that this flop of a system had a licensed game to a flop of a movie; Water World. Like a match made in purgatory. TereoBoxer tried to be Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! Only the cart wasn't able to fit it all in. You go from Glass Joe to Bald Bull to Mike, himself. Where's the gentle curve of progress? I kind of liked the Pinball one, the most. (That's not saying much.) And Mario Bros was decent enough. Hardly needed to be in 3D, though. Jack Bros is suppose to be great. Alas, my copy was gunked up and tended to crash. Nintendo couldn't even offer a cleaning solution. As this rebel lemon system used tiny pins over the contacts that every other cart console ever used. The controller holds a ton of batteries that the system eats through. And the stand never evolved from prototype. No adjustments and that plastic bit between the legs will crack from the strain of just holding the thing in place. Ironically, the only good stand was the demo unit, found in BlockBusters and such stores. No, sir. This system is not worth owning. Thank everything that we now have emulators to salvage what few good games really needed ports to begin with. After all, did Nintendo ever get the memo to rebuild and port the good games to their far superior 3DS? Doesn't seem like it, no matter how much of a no brainer it should have been. Oh...and as for that unit I bought. Pawned it when money was tight and never looked back.
i actually have memories of testing this out as a demo unit when i was a kid in the 90s the local video store had a demo unit i think it was mario i played but i remember it being cool but way beyond any hope of something i could afford but i probably played it maybe the first week of release so ill treasure that memory
Great review! To fix the issue of comfort while playing, you can pick up a 3D printed piece that makes it attach to any camera tripod. I use it for my Virtual Girl since I don't have the stand for that one (yet). I've yet to have any of the headaches or eye issues associated with it and that says something. I'm legally blind without my glasses. I hope you get to making more videos on it and its games.
"Is the Virtual Boy Worth Playing Today?" Being I just bought it off Ebay this year, I'd say yes. 6:18 I never experienced dizziness, nausea, eye strain, or headaches. The only thing remotely bad I experienced is dry eyes, but that's my fault for not blinking often enough, because, like that Aerosmith song, I don't want to miss a thing (the 3D effect). 6:30 The best way to play, is having the Virtual Boy on a computer desk, while you sit in a computer chair where you can adjust the height, that way you are not hunch over and you are in a natural position. The games I recommend for the system are: Red Alarm: My favorite game for the system. It's one of the best games on the system to showcase the 3D effects. It's a fun spaceship shooter like Star Fox, but you can roam around freely and even stop the ship still in a hover (though most of the levels are linear). Wario Land: Fun platformer. Innsmouth Mansion (Innsmouth no Yakata): This game may have only been released in Japan, but the Virtual Boy's are region free. This game is a 1st person shooter (which I'm surprised, with a system with virtual in the name, there weren't more 1st person shooters on the system). You are trapped in a mansion with monsters and you have to quickly get through each level as fast as you can to get the good ending, out of 4 possible endings. Jack Bros: A top-down "shooter" where you run around a maze to find a key to move to the next level. Panic Bomber: Puzzle games are one of my least favorite genres, but Panic Bomber is one where there is just something about it I enjoy. SD Gundam Dimension Wars: Another Japan only game. It's a Tactical RPG/Strategy game.
I have five games so far, Mario Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Wario Land and today I got Red Alarm. Thanks for the input. Always good to see positivity in the direction of these underplayed systems.
The virtual boy does have a bad reputation but I don't know why, I've played 1 my self and I found it really enjoyable, when you get home you need to set it up on a table at a decent hight so you can just lean forward into it, that will make it far more comfortable to play
Yeah he has done that to a lot of games, rob the robot gets a bad wrap because of him aswell but I'm looking forward to eventually buying one and giving it a go for my self
Indeed, I have just come back from the states, the amounts of highly priced copies of Doctor Jeckyll and Mr Hyde I saw for sale behind glass cabinets in retro game stores said it all.
Love idea of nice american families visiting the Grand Canyon only to find a crazy Brit in a Top Hat attempting to use a Virtual Boy. Well played, Sir.
I remember playing this in a blockbuster back in the day. Would love to get it, but the prices are just nuts. I take it your opponent is going for the old Big Daddy look? Moved pretty fluid for such a big guy
Hi Top Hat Man. I've been watching quite a few of your videos lately. I really liked your piece on the Neo Geo Pocket Color especially. On another note, I had no idea you are a wrestler. Can you point me in the direction to some of your matches? I'm from the US so I haven't seen a lot of matches from overseas beyond NJPW. Keep up the great work! I dig the fact that you research the hidden gems on this industry. You and I have that in common as collectors.
+Top Hat Gaming Man Thanks for the info. You cut a good promo. I can see how your wrestling persona translates into Top Hat Man gaming. I don't know if you are eventually looking to take things this far but it would be pretty awesome if you made it to the WWE and did gaming reviews with Austin Creed. I like watching your perspective because I get to see my fair share of the US and Japanese perspective of the hobby but EU is a bit of mystery to me. Watching your videos on the Amstrad and the ZX Spectrum were quite an eye opener and it was nice to see the different hardware. BTW, nice Mega Drive / Genesis collection. If you ever get the chance, try adding Shadow Dancer to your collection. If you like Shinobi games, you may enjoy that one. I see you are a Shining fan as well. The developer that worked on Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force also worked on the Golden Sun series for the GBA and 3DS. You can notice similarities in the in game menu design art.
I've owned a VB for quite a few years now, and I never understood the hate. Yes, it's an example of ambition being limited by technology, but there are some damn fine games, and the 3D works very well. You just need to find a table to put the system on :) Obviously, Wario Land VB is a highlight, but I have a soft spot for Teleroboxer as well :)
Greetings good sir! I agree with a lot of the points made in this video review of the Virtual Boy. I too feel that it has garnered a lot of hate because of personalities like AVGN and others. Is it a good system, no, but it’s better than what a lot of people give it credit for. Without this system laying the ground work, the Nintendo 3DS line of handhelds more than likely wouldn’t exist. Cheers!
hope you get to see a pro wrestling show while you're here in the States. I miss my virtual boy mine bro!e years ago. I still have some of the games though.
Hello my friend, I love your videos and I sincerely find them to be a much needed breath of fresh air. In this currently overwhelming environment that to me is like an endless ocean of mediocrity where the masses of RUclips "reviewers" appear to be content with the seemingly mindless repetition of the same old retro and "bad game" cliche videos , I find your snarky sense of humor and hilariously critical looks at the ignorantly oblivious (and in most cases just flat out moronic) younger generations to be a unique and unbeatable experience. Please keep up the great work and keep living the good life for those of us with less of a disposable income, Cheers! Oh and I was also wondering if you still happen to be in the states? If so, where are you at now on your adventure? I'm a college student in center city Philadelphia and amT really curious/ hoping that maybe you'll make it here to my neck of the woods.
Hi, I am pleased to hear that you enjoy my work. I have just began my final week in the United States and I am now in New York State for the duration of my stay. I am currently in Buffalo, checking out Niagara Falls from the US side. I visited Philadelphia a few months back. It was one of the first places I visited, I made a video there entitled 'The forgotten GBA Punch Out Game'.
It should have been called Virtua Boy. THGM vs AVGN, that could be a possibility. THGM 8 Moves of Doom will spell Disahpear after He makes short work of AVGN........

My friends kept telling me to get one and I got a Windows 10 HP laptop as a gift for Christmas. For ages I've been jealous of Steam so that's why I switched to PC. Though nowadays I find myself playing old retro games more and more. I loved this video and that was cool that you were a retired pro wrestler.
Great video. I totally feel the Virtual Boy deserves the reputation it gets. It's a really bad mistake by Nintendo in the mid 90s, even the 32X is more worthy but I'm sure Nintendo fanboys think otherwise...
If it was in color i think it would be a bit more bearable but that red scheme is absolutely dreadful and depressing to look at . I bought a virtual boy nearly 20years ago.. traded a ton of stuff to make the £200 asking price.. the guy was reluctant to sell it with all the health warnings.. took it to a retro games shop recently and was offered £200..is it worth keeping or is breaking even reasonable in this case.. they advertised on ebay for £560 but hard to tell if that legit.
Red as the mono color choice was terrible. The military learned long ago if you can only use one color green is the ideal choice which why night vision used green. Green is the easiest color on the human eye.
It's really bot that expensive dude, I bought a refurbished one with four games for 230 on eBay. I guess that's expensive, but I didn't think so for something so rare and catastrophicly bad
I've played Mario Tennis on one of these. The 3D effect is alright, but the red is bloody annoying to look at. So ugly and lacking in definition. Having to keep your eyes glued to those sockets to do that is not a pleasant experience. Can't imagine someone who'd bought this, being excited to return play. I agree with Top Hat Man, that the 3D on the 3DS is rubbish.
It’s funny how he has problems playing the virtual boy comfortably. I think I have the reason why! IT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE PLAYING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF A DESERT!
I see! this is one of this videos "i am cool because i dont like AVGN, he is wrong"! :) 1) Problems with eyes. "I played 5 min and had no probs" Really!? :) than try to play 1 hour or so you will see the difference! :) black-red is really very bad choice for games. 2)initial price was US$179.95 - just to much for such thing! 3) It isnt atari 2600 any more, as gamer you should beat this games and not "have fun" for 5 min for US$179.95 :) 4) nintendo promised! "totally immerse players into their own private universe." In fact only couple of games had something to do with "virtual reality" So in conclusion it WAS a piece of shit and not "somehow not so bad because AVGN is too hype and wrong" :) ps. Sorry for my english it isnt motherlanguage
hahaha absolutly loved being a part of this :) great video! Yeeeaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Daniel Ibbertson it was a cool part of the video. Along with castlevania 2 another really great game that gets a really bad rap is grabbed by the ghoulsies easily my favorite game for the original Xbox and one I always dismissed until recently.
Daniel Ibbertson lol
People laughing at PSVR in a couple of years?
No, we are laughing at it now :D
Yes, I use the 3D on my New 3DS - I couldn't imagine playing Metroid: Samus Returns with the 3D off because it looks ten times better with it on!
I actually loved this damn system when I had one as a kid. I actually had two because they were so cheap, but my mom sold them both on ebay when I was in the Army. Sigh.
Great seeing you at the Grand Canyon. I was there a few months back too. It's so bloody 'uge!
that was excellent. so glad to have learned about your channel :)
yeeeeaaahhh
Giyot'
The Telepathic anger was my favorite part of the whole video! 😂
Another great video from the Top Hat Gammon. You gave it a chance.
Top hat gaming man got triggered by emulators
I remember buying one of these at KB toys on clearance for 19.99. We threw it away after a couple weeks due to headache and eye strain.
You're a thorough bloke! Great review man! I really dig your adventures along the way.
I'm using the 3D effect on my 3DS, with the right depth it's really good and immersive on the 3DS XL. I think the New3DS is the best way to play it, because the screen adjusts the polarizer to your eye position.
Whilst I feel the 3D works fine on the 3DS, I still find the experience playing it better with the 3D turned off.

Lol the rant at the end bloody classic !
I had a go when I was a kid, didn't think it was too bad, but then again that was for just 2 minutes or so while my mate was setting up Goldeneye.

Damn it all, you've earwormed me with Mihen Road. Un-bloody-called for!
Very entertaining video as always 👍
hahahahahaha (Tidus Laugh)
Top Hat Gaming Man what are YOU laughing at, Old Man? *pause* *pause* *pause* I-Hate-You!
Still earwormed and now with Tidus phrases. Eugh.

I think whilst the system is obviously flawed, it is more due the fact that it is cool to hate anything, the Angry Video Game Nerd made fun of.
Yeah he has done that to a lot of games, rob the robot gets a bad wrap because of him aswell but I'm looking forward to eventually buying one and giving it a go for my self

Someone did actually come up to me and ask me why I was playing a virtual boy at the canyon lol.
Top Hat Gaming Man :)
Skies of Arcadia music. Yum!

great video....great idea....subbed
hope you get to see a pro wrestling show while you're here in the States. I miss my virtual boy mine bro!e years ago. I still have some of the games though.
awesome video! keep it up man i liked it haha

I am currently in Buffalo, checking out Niagara Falls from the US side. I visited Philadelphia a few months back. It was one of the first places I visited, I made a video there entitled 'The forgotten GBA Punch Out Game'.
Great Vid as always.
The greatest Tag Team formed over the Virtual boy?!
Anything can happen in the internet
I always play my 3DS games in 3D. Then again, I have two Virtual Boys
Skies of Arcadia
Ironically, I now own a Virtual Boy that I just bought today.
Lol same
I'm getting more and more nervous as you close in on my location.
I need to fix my virtual boy. I loved Wario back in the day, but never finished it.
Well done Ole chap
It should have been called Virtua Boy. THGM vs AVGN, that could be a possibility. THGM 8 Moves of Doom will spell Disahpear after He makes short work of AVGN........
I love your hat.
>Trashing the PS4 in favor of the Wii U
Oh my! This cultured gentleman has edge.
Thank you, its not that I have anything against the PS4, I just find them a bit redundant as everything on the PS4 and Xbox One, you can now get on the PC. Making there existence pointless.
Top Hat Gaming Man. No need to feel bad mate I agree with you. I have a 360 and for ages I had no desire to upgrade to a One because it feels like a 360 1.5.
I genuinely enjoyed the 3d effect , it's very immersive no doubt but it's novelty wore off fast.
I put it back in the box, stored it in a closet for about 10 years and then sold it a couple of years ago .
I got a VB for $10 at a yard sale. So afterall there are more reasons why someone would have one! Haha... I only have two games, WarioLand and Mario Tennis.
The production and quality of your videos has gone way up... Good..Good...
That was fantastic!
Review Waterworld for the Virtual Boy.
such a god video, you never fail to make me laugh
Red as the mono color choice was terrible. The military learned long ago if you can only use one color green is the ideal choice which why night vision used green. Green is the easiest color on the human eye.

Hey top hat gaming I got a old handheld console for you my dude. Atari lynx

It’s funny how he has problems playing the virtual boy comfortably. I think I have the reason why!
IT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE PLAYING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF A DESERT!
Feels good to see Dan here!
it burns the eyeballs out of whoever plays it! That's not what you want a gaming machine to do don’t buy the VB
So... At 10:18 is when we all agree...
Ya know we’re not deaf, mate. Turn your voice down and step away from the mic
lololololol that was funny good video lolol
people don't even need to watch the video to get there answer
You pug nose giyot'; yeeaahh!
name an handheld made in America?
The Microvision by Milton Bradley and the Atari Lynx are two that instantly come to mind...
Anthony Williams. Sega Gamegear.
God damn, you must hate AVGN.
Hell nooo
I see! this is one of this videos "i am cool because i dont like AVGN, he is wrong"! :)
1) Problems with eyes. "I played 5 min and had no probs" Really!? :) than try to play 1 hour or so you will see the difference! :) black-red is really very bad choice for games.
2)initial price was US$179.95 - just to much for such thing!
3) It isnt atari 2600 any more, as gamer you should beat this games and not "have fun" for 5 min for US$179.95 :)
4) nintendo promised! "totally immerse players into their own private universe." In fact only couple of games had something to do with "virtual reality"
So in conclusion it WAS a piece of shit and not "somehow not so bad because AVGN is too hype and wrong" :)
ps. Sorry for my english it isnt motherlanguage
never knew you were a pro wrestler lol
learn something new every video
I can't believe Nintendo made a console worse than the Wii U
a shout out also goes to the N64 DD and the often forgotten IQue
Look at the Wii.
