Pebeo / Illustrated Faith Watercolor Review (Not what I expected...)

  • Hi friends! Today I am reviewing the Pébéo watercolor set by Illustrated Faith. I am not a Bible journaler but I am a watercolor artist and crafter. I am doing my best to provide a fair review. I think both companies, Pebeo and Bella Boulevard/Illustrated Faith, usually make high-quality products so I don't want to discourage you from purchasing other things they make but these watercolors are just..well, watch the review.
Details: 12 half pan watercolors and brush in an attractive white metal tin made by Pébéo and imported by Bella Boulevard fro the Illustrated Faith range of products. amzn.to/2GXkjdw This paint palette retails for $30 but I paid $13 on Amazon as a warehouse deal. These paints can be found in other Pebeo palettes as well amzn.to/2GRf1Qy and the line contains 28 colors. Pebeo is a French company but these paints are made in China.
    Pros:
*The tin is lovely, and the fold-out mixing tray is flat when held or placed on a table.
    *The brush is decent
*Paint holds a crisp line on unsized paper like notepaper and cardstock.
    Cons:
*Odd color selection that is not good for mixing or convenience
    *Colors are weak and chalky
*Big shift in color from wet to dry
    *Pan holder insert is sharp
*Paints look bad on watercolor paper
    *Bad flow
*Paint tends to bloom on watercolor paper
*Mixes go muddy quickly due to fillers/extenders
    Bottom line:
I find no joy in painting with these. They do not move, flow and mix with luminosity which are the qualities I love in watercolors. These could really turn someone off to the medium. However, the do work well on common household papers and cardstock which makes them suitable for bible or junk journaling. Still, the color selection is not great and definitely not worth the full price. The tin is nice tho. My recommendation for a set of paints that would work in your bible or other unsized papers would be Meeden: amzn.to/31r51XA (they have 12, 24 and 48 sets ranging from $14-$29 and there are often coupons) or Arteza: amzn.to/3b6d1lv (12 and 36 sets available ranging from $18-$35) or Masters Touch in the metal tin at your local Hobby Lobby, they are often on sale for %50 off the regular prices of $20 for 24 or $40 for $48. Please note that those recommendations are for watercolor for nonwatercolor paper surfaces or watercolors that are similar in feel to Pebeo but more saturated and higher quality at a lower cost. Those paints are not my recommendations for traditional watercolor painting tho.

Lindsay I Bible journal and I use these. You are right they are not good at all for regular water coloring. But they do work well on my Bible journal. The chalkiness works well on that type paper. I wouldn’t recommend them for regular water coloring on watercolor paper but for my Bible journaling they work well. Since the paper on a Bible journal is a very unique type it seems to work well together. I have even used the cheap $5 sets in my Bible journal and they work well too. I think the cheap stuff is better on thin tissue like paper of most Bible journals. But I completely understand what you are saying. Thanks for the review. And you didn’t sound to negative at all. Glad you were honest.

Thank you for your perspective, Edith. I am glad these work for you and it seems the color selection matching other IF products is helpful to many bible journalers.

Good to know. When we use these on our Bibles, we are sometimes painting over the words in order to illustrate or to highlight them...and if these are chalky...it might obstruct seeing the words. Also, someone in this newsfeed mentioned that the colors match their line of embellishments and I would agree with that. But for those who might be new to this, you can use the cheap $5 Michael’s brand to get similar results. I now use my better quality watercolors....swatched them...scanned them into my computer and can now make my own word art, matching the swatches to the word art or illustrations...saves a lot of money.

I don’t think you were mean or anything. You were giving your opinion as experienced person who deals with paint and you didn’t want anyone especially those new to watercolor to not be frustrated with the medium. A bad watercolor will turn you off to the medium faster than a light changes. Also I would think a chalky paint will transfer the ‘dust’ to other side of the Bible’s pages. Perhaps a good set of 12 watercolor pencils might give the user a better result.

I think you did the right thing. This is a company who should know better. Thank you for being honest and speaking up about it. I've had pebeo watercolor and it was chalky. It absolutely discouraged me from water coloring. Until I found you and bought better quality watercolor!! ( white knights is my absolute favourite!!!!!) Thank you Lindsay!!!

You are so kind and diplomatic Lindsay! I tried these too a few years ago, and drew the same conclusion. I do love the tin, especially the rolled edges. You don't find that very often. Thanks for sharing the review, and thanks for being honest and kind. That can be a hard combination to nail, but you did.

Honesty is the best policy, Lindsay. Always! I appreciate that you are honest, but also know that for some people, the product will be just what they needed. I hate to admit that I have one of those $6 sets of 36 watercolors, and they are "crap!" They're chalky, don't wet worth a hoot, and the results are drab and disappointing. I got them on a whim, wanted to try watercoloring, and thought they might work. (This was a while ago before I began watching your reviews.) Now I know better. I hate to pitch them so they lay in the bottom of my watercolor storage bin. I purchased some better tube watercolors (can't remember brands) and a good pallet and now I know what you are talking about!! Yay! Keep reviewing and being honest. Thanks!

I appreciate honest reviews whether it's mostly positive or negative and Lindsey, I know you're not mean! Your personality is a lot of the reason I've become such a devoted subscriber. I watched a video earlier where the person had done reviews and given her honest opinions and some of the companies actually wanted her to delete the video and remake it and only discuss the positive aspects of the product. You would think rather than hide their flaws behind nothing but good publicity, they would listen to the consumers and work to improve upon the negatives. It would be unfair to your viewers if you weren't totally honest about your opinions and that's not you! Just stay as you are, true to yourself and those with whom you interact or might influence! You're amazing! Thanks for all that you do!

You weren't being mean at ALL here. You were being honest not hateful!! You didn't bash the company totally or disrespect them. You stated that they are known for good quality with their other products. You gave an honest review about a product and even STILL tried to be as positive as possible pointing out possible uses and stressed any positives that they had. Not your fault there weren't very many positive things you can say! This is why we trust your opinion and why so many of us rely on your reviews when looking at purchasing a new product. Thank you for your honesty.

I find you review of these to be so excellent and helpful. I think a struggle across a lot of youtubers who do product reviews is that no one wants to be negative and upset people and typically just opt to not review the product at all.
However, not reviewing it at all leaves no information for people to go to who are looking into buying them. You’re reviewing a company and the product, not a particular person or individual and I think reviews Ike this are so important because they warn people of whether or not it is a poor product.

Corporations are making very poor quality products across the price points. It's time we start calling them all out. If they make a sucky product they don't deserve a good review. It's our hard-earned money being spent on crappy products.

I really liked the blueberries you did in that paint. The chalkiness made it seem sort of vintage.
I'm sure lots of other people have said so, but you didn't sound hateful at all. I'm glad you give negative reviews as well as positive!

  • @FranNyan
    @FranNyan 4 года назад +14

If a company puts out a product that is poor, it's not mean to call that out. They're a company. The moment you put something up for sale for people to buy, you are opening yourself up to criticism, and that criticism should be fair, and factual. If the product is poor, the review needs to reflect that. You don't need to apologize for saying why the product is poor. You're doing a service for people who might be thinking about buying that product and honesty, *especially* when the product is poor, is *critical.*
You're not being a downer, you're not being negative, you're being honest. *Please* be honest. Companies always put forth blind praise of their own products, and we need people's true experiences to contrast that if we're ever to figure out what products are worth spending our money on.
The poor choice of colors reminds me of the Niji cheap tube set. The two reds they provided where basically the same, one just stronger than the other. The blues were similar. The main difference is that that set cost about $4 with coupon, so you kinda get what you pay for.

Thanks for steering me clear of disappointment. I would rather save up and buy the best colors I can afford. And, by the way, you were far from mean -- you wound up on a very positive note and brought out the set's biggest strength. Great job!

I have several friends who are into the Bible journaling that is popular right now so I'm glad to have the 411 on what these are like and your video to share with them. It is interesting to hear what the good points are about them and what they are not. Honestly, you didn't seem subversive to me at all. Demonstrating how things really work or don't in real life is doing us all a favor. Ya can't please all the people all the time as they say. You did an excellent job of being as gracious as possible with this product. I totally understand about wanting to not bum people out too. I have had to approach people who ask me questions about plants the same way. When they are in love with a plant that is not going to work for them it's hard, but to just sell them something that will frustrate them and die or take over their garden, I just can't do that. I've seen so many people get less than honest information from a nursery clerk or even an owner and end up with a monster in their garden or a plant that would fail and them being out time, money and an entire season of enjoyment because someone was more concerned about selling than meeting the needs of the customer. Integrity is a good thing, so keep it up girl!

Good, honest review, and not mean at all. You clearly know a lot about paints-- things I, as a beginner, wouldn't have even considered. I appreciated your thoughts on why you weren't crazy about these instead of just saying they are not good. I could see when you used the blue to layer how vibrant they were when wet, yet as they dried, I could see the "dullness." And, you did point out that they are good when used on cheaper paper. Even good companies can make a misstep. Thank you for your review! (And the tin is great!)

I bought this set a few years ago, before they got branded by Illustrated Faith. Hate to say it, but they are the only pans I've scraped out and thrown away rather than at least saved for my kids (the $5 Michaels palette of 36 is easier to paint with). They were very unpleasant to work with. I was really curious to see if you had a better experience. Guess not; at least glad I didn't imagine it.

You delivered an honest opinion, you weren't nasty about it & your points were perfectly valid based on your experience. You have nothing to feel bad about, they really could have made better choices, as they have the products available. Amongst my palettes, I have the Pebeo Aquarelle Fine, 24 demi godet circular tin set, which was around $20 on Wish (similar price point) & has a varied selection of warm & cool primaries plus green, orange & purple. It also has Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Sepia & Payne's Grey & came with that strange travel brush. The colours are much richer & clearer than the student tubes I started out with, the paint in the godets dried with a shiny or glossy surface, almost sticky on a few, but I haven't really used it enough to comment on how it works or mixes. I can get back to you after I've played a bit more.

I hope it works out for you. Maybe if the colors are more saturated (less of a muted range) they will perform better. If nothing else use them on cards and envelopes. At least you will know if you have similar results in watercolor paper that the paint is the issue and not your technique.

At first I thought they were possibly fake pebeo, but now think that they were made specifically for bible journaling which is fine, but I would like to say that if they are full of fillers, whatever they are made for, surely they should be cheaper. Just a thought from someone who doesn’t know anything about bible journaling, but if the ingredients are cheaper and the uses are limited, then they should cost less than the original full price that you mentioned. It’s great that you try these things for us, thankyou very much Lindsay. xx

As a salty old retail hag, I see sets like these and would never bring them into the store where I work. And HONEST reviews (by you and others on RUclips) are invaluable for my buying patterns for the store. What gets my goat, and I say this as a person who is very much NOT religious, is that it bothers me that these are being marketed to people who may buy them based on deep personal faith. It just seems greasy to me. "Slap some bible branding on crap and watch the lambs buy." It's deeply manipulative and disturbing.

abigail van der Pluijm Have you seen the Gansai pans? There so bright and pigmented. I usually prefer Winsor Newton but their half pans are too small. Thanks for the recommendation!

The Artistic Purr gansai paints don’t work the same as western watercolours like W&N. Layering Gansai is problematic, because they are not designed to be layered so you can’t build transparent luminosity with them and they lift very easily. Having said that they are good paints and great for colouring books and painting styles that don’t require more than a couple of layers and of course great on the Japanese washi/etegami paper they are designed for.

I liked your review. The reason for those colors is the person at illistrated faith uses thoes colors all the time in her books. I think the set was to match the colors in her books. They did not rock my world either.

Teoh Yi Chie mentioned this set in an old overview of affordable beginner palettes. He specifically said that the paints were bad but worth it for the tin if you got it cheap. I want it just because the fold-out palette doesn't have the thumb divot - THAT is something I haven't found in a lot of watercolor tins!
I will be using watercolor on cheap/regular paper, in notebooks and planners and stuff, and I'm sure I'll be able to use these for that kind of very basic stuff. But yeah, really I just want a tin without the thumb hole in the flip-out palette... Ugh...

You are so clearly worried about seeming mean in this video, but nobody who watches your channel could _ever_ think you are anything even close to mean! It's not just ok to say what you really think, it's really helpful. I learned so much from this video -- about how paints are made and which qualities make them good or bad for different supports, what a fugitive pigment is, why I should think really hard about which colors are in a set, so much more, AND I learned that you keep a gigantic swatch book which seems like the mother-lode of all pigment wisdom! Thank you for everything you share. I really enjoy your videos.

I'm sorry, but you really made me chuckle getting so (rightly!) animated about a bad product. 😇 😂 Me, I love a salty product review, that's why I follow NerdECrafter! 😁
It annoys me when companies make the packaging look like it's a special collection of some sort but the actual product falls short - I'd much rather have a well made product in very plain packaging.

I’ve seen these paints around for yeaaaaaars but never used them. Been tempted for the longest time because of the lovely tin, but now I know to stay away.
The ones that I’ve used are the Pebeo Studio watercolor tubes (they’re cheap paints that for me work better than the Reeves tubes), and the Pebeo Aquarelle Fine in tubes (these are actually good).
The Studio ones I barely use anymore. They work better on cheap paper, kinda like you describe the pans. And the paints are a bit matte and sort of opaque because of fillers. Putting those in a palette is painful because they dry, crack and flake off, and if I want them to stay on place and nice to work with I need to add glycerin.
The Aquarelle Fine, on the other hand, became my first student grade paints together with (and very comparable to) Grumbacher Academy tubes in 2015 and I still use some of them a lot together with the professional brands I’ve added little by little since then: W&N, Schmincke, M Graham and Sennelier. Also just got the Paul Rubens 4th gen tubes, which are fantastic, and added 6 colors to my main studio palette that has 8 of the 12 that came with the Pebeo Aquarelle Fine set that I was gifted. These are very pigmented and stay in the palette. They don’t crack or travel, they stay nicely in their place and are easy to re-wet.
I’m mostly done with the tubes and when I finally run out I’m not gonna get the same ones again but replace them with similar ones from professional brands, not because I didn’t enjoy them but because they’ve become hard to find here and don’t come in open stock. Also I can afford to get stuff a step above now.
Btw, the Studio are made in China, the Aquarelle Fine tubes are made in France.

Hi Lindsay! Also a Lindsay here! LOLLL - Your disclaimer.. I was wondering how these would turn out for you because I have a set of Pebeo Watercolor that came in a circular tin. I believe the colors were different but they were equally terrible. I love and appreciate your honesty here, and I hope you don't get too much flack for 'negativity'. The moment I heard "You won't have any trouble mixing mud", I laughed OUT LOUD. Because it's true.

The paints looked good on the card stock but definitely not on the watercolour paper! From what I have learn't over the years and perhaps you could put the theory bangs to right if I am wrong! So here goes! I am guessing that with watercolour paper the pigment is being absorbed into the paper leaving the binders to dry on the surface! With regards to card stock which seems to have no tooth texture the binder and the pigment stay on the surface? So I am putting it out there as a question ....Can the binder and pigment part depending on the surface?

I have a love for the truth so I found your review of the Illustrated Faith Watercolors refreshing. BTW, I do own the very thing you are reviewing and I found the same thing you found. I do oils usually (which I am a lover of) but did want to try Watercolors so I bought these, so I found your review true to your words. Have a great week and thank you again for being truthful as it does keep you credible. :)

I am into Bible journaling. I use Winsor and Newton, Mission Gold, and Master's Touch. I did research before buying. I got Master's Touch to try out watercolors. I also use colored Pencils. mainly Prismacolor and Polychromos. Yea, I did some research before buying pencils. Goldfaber is another decent set of pencils.

Thanks Lindsay. I saw a brand new set of these on eBay for under £12 & I’ve left my Schmincke travel set at my chaps place so I though perhaps I’d try these (like I haven’t got enough paint to sink a ship). You’ve saved me, I detest chalky paint. I tried a Koh-I-Noor set that I got cheap as it was slightly used from eBay, that was the same & went straight in the bin. Doesn’t matter how cheap it is, if you can’t use it, it’s money down the drain.

I bought a few cakes of these Pebeo when I started watercolour years ago (as they are widely available in France) but I never really used them, nor liked them. But believe me, I found a much worst set of watercolour that Pebeo.
The Daler Rowney Simply line ... a disaster!! I don't know if I got a bad bach but OMG they are horrible.
    Thanks for this video :D

It's possible these are formulated specifically for use on the thin paper that Bible are printed on. The paintings you did look nice. The colors seem very transparent which would allow the print to show through. I've seen Bible journalists use the whole page to decorate, not just the margins and it seems like this product would lend itself to that.

Excellent review... I'm a Bible Journaler and I agree totally about using the best for watercoloring... I'm an Arches and Windsor Newton purist... but Bible paper is extremely fragile and thin so the sharp lines are good in that regard... but I find Illustrated faith is just a big money grab so not surprised they use cheap crap!! I do want this tin though!

Thank you so much for another wonderful and HONEST review. RUclips is filled with so many popular "influencers" it is refreshing to hear a true impression that is clearly without bias. It is becoming so rare, you are a treasure. I am addicted to review videos, for fear of making uninformed purchases. We all work hard for our money and try not to be wasteful. I am not in the market for yet ANOTHER set of paints, as I am working on using what I have! One of my current (and first) pallet is the "pretty excellent" as I am a beginner (and shouldn't own even more than 1-2 pallets). How do you think that one stacks up against the pallets you recommended today? Thanks again!

The colors actually match their paper lines so that’s why they are not the ‘normal’ watercolor pallet colors...I don’t use to mix just more to color in and splatter like most Bible journalers:):) thank you for trying to be as positive as possible!! It’s not for actual water coloring like an artist if that makes sense, use DS and other mixable watercolors for that:):) hope that helps understand the whys a bit better:):) p. S. the brush is great for our splatters we do a lot of😉❤️

With the Windsor and Newton Cotman sketchers set only $14 on Amazon, this set is not worth $5 much less the 13 they're charging. You can get good, student grade paints for the same price as this set.
Plus you get a true split primaries, two green, three earthy, and white(which should be tossed in favor of a convenience color).

I would love to tell all I use cheapo watercolors in my bible. I don’t have a special bible at all. It was my mother’s so why I’m painting in it. Some pages I have prepped with clear gesso but I have also painted right on the page and it does give it a lovely crinkle (if that bothers you) but I kind of like it.

Like they say, "truth hurts"... I'm grateful for your honest review. I've purchased sooooo many sets and have decided that it isnt the paints, it's me. I suck at it! It definitely isnt for lack of trying! I'll keep trying, but when you are horrible with Daniel Smith WC paints, you need to give it up. I'll stick with my Alcohol Ink markers! Which, by the way, Hobby Lobby has a new brush nib marker and I'm really enjoying them! I dont think you have a HL up there, so if youd like me to grab you a couple of coloring blending sets, let me know. I think they come to about $3 a marker. I don't remember 🤷‍♀️

i got the pebeo set for the tin, not the paint. it doesn't have the half circle cutout on the mixing tray. I figured at about 20 bucks, the tin was worth about 10, so for 10 bucks the grand-chiggers some more watercolor for their art box .... and i'll have more half pans.
