Yo actually the old trailer Mike brought up is for Metroid Prime 4, which is separate from Dread. It was recentlyish announced that Prime 4's development basically hit the reset button. Dread's announcement and release were much more tightly packed together time-wise.
Yeah, and Dread is technically Metroid 5 in terms of the 2D games. The number 4 just meant the fourth Prime game. Dread's announcement was also a surprise with no prior teasers or rumors.
Came here to say this. Metroid Prime 4 =/= Metroid 4 (that’s Metroid Fusion). Metroid Dread existed as a half announced rumor that was originally planned for the Nintendo DS.
So hard! But I couldn’t stop trying every day until I beat it, just like the rest of the game. I describe it as an Actual Game, a throwback to what a great game used to be
That boss took me days of trying, plus RUclips videos and discussing strategy (I only watched the form I was on so I wouldn’t spoil it). Then after I finally won, I tried again the next morning and beat it easily. Now the first boss is harder than the last. Lol
@@NicoEvaluates there's maybe a couple of feet of space behind them, maximum, so wheeling in a big CRT would make the set cluttered, cramped, and look awkward and really distracting.
My PS5, 3 controllers and the new 3D headset I got today mainly with cash back on work truck gas all look like an E.M.M.I. Beat it on hard mode under 4 hours. Best final boss in a metroid game in my opinion.
I totally agree with mike around the 30 min mark. It kind of reminds me of when people say there should be an easy mode for dark souls.. Just play the game and get good
I agree and disagree. I think I’d a sequel is much harder than the others in a series or requires a different kind of skill set, I can see why that would be annoying to a franchise fan. Like, if Zelda just became Dark Souls all of a sudden, I can see why people would want it to be different. Same reason people wish there were more dungeons in Breath of the Wild. Fans go in expecting a certain difficulty or accessibility and then they don’t get what they enjoyed out of a series in the first place. Not saying Dread does this necessarily but the game definitely requires a much higher hand eye coordination barrier than previous titles.
As someone who plays a lot of different games, it's hard to imagine someone dedicating so much time to one single game in order to get good enough to run through it as fast as possible.
Upstairs Downstairs Anyone remember playing this trackball game on 80s PC? Best game in computer lab. It’s weird remembering those old systems with a trackball built into the keyboard.
Double Dragon on Arcade Archives is well emulated... if you hate it because it is super slow that's because it was like that on the original arcade board. I wish they added some sort of overclock option in the settings to make it work faster. Metal Slug 2 Arcade Archives has the same problem... it's freaking slow.
Double Dragon isn't bad emulation. The arcade game is actually that slow because the original hardware couldn't handle the game. MAME has a bootleg version of the game that used better arcade hardware so it runs faster. The rom name is ddragonb.
I popped in Mikes twitch and recommended Metroid Dread because it’s a game I think he’d love, dead silence lol. Just thought you’d like it dude! Haha He has probably said “maybe later” a thousand times, I think, after seeing this.
I’ve been watching or at least noting the existence of talk about bands for a while, but I hadn’t seen this one until now. I finally beat Dread a couple weeks ago. It’s the hardest game I’ve ever beaten. The bosses are often soul crushing hard, but since you respawn right outside, you don’t have a good excuse for quitting. You are on some seriously crazy drugs if you thought it looked bad in the trailer. It was one of the most visually hype games I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t believe how cool it looked. The problems only came after really playing it myself. Overall, after beating it, I say that it’s probably the best 2D Metroid, but Super was better for its time. Also Mike can suck a lemon lol. Not everyone wants to play a hard as hell game. Not everyone wants your version of nostalgia. They have both SP and original versions of games, so you can choose which suits you. If someone today plays Metroid 1 for the first time, no cheats, they’re going to probably toss it back. Who wants to put up with all that?
Now I really have an urge to play through a bunch of arcade games. I miss my old copy of Asteroids for Game Boy Color. I really like the discussion about how there is so much unnecessary pressure to play big games right when they release. Gaming should never be out of obligation. It’s also good to wait because of how frequently new games get patched at first.
Just an FYI, the game where everyone is screaming and there is a 4, that was a teaser for Metroid Prime 4 which is still in development. Dread is Metroid 5.
The Switch's online plan is 2-tiered with the N64 games available on the higher tier. Most basic online multiplayer functions can be done on the low tier and since the high tier doesn't really bring much to the table and it's very VERY expensive considering Nintendo's servers, people are reasonably pissed off.
Ryan you should get a fly mesh screen for your windows at screenwave. it is like a net that goes over window so you can open window in summer and no mosquitos n stuff comes in
The one thing I don't like about those Arcade Archives is how there's not that element of being able to discover anything new like in compilations. Like, I bought Midway Arcade Classics for Smash TV and Marble Madness, and then discovered Tapper and freakin' loved it. Like sure, you could easily put down eight bucks for a game you already know you'll play, but back in the day, you'd try out arcade games for a quarter, and if it didn't gel with you, you'd just move on. So that's why I prefer compilations, it's like going to an arcade with a door fee, but everything's on free play.
The original Double Dragon arcade PCB has tons of slowdown, it feels even worse than SNES slowdown. The Arcade Archives replicates it pretty faithfully, the original game is just broken.
Double Dragon arcade is almost unplayable nowadays because of the way it runs. It really chugs. Its funny how few people noticed that defect at the time though, i was surprised when i saw it on MAME years later. The colourful graphics and giant sprites made DD a very good looking game.
Man Mike I have no clue how to pull off killing the final boss ice foot in snake rattle and roll. Played it for 12 hours on Sunday to get good enough to see the boss. Brutal boss. Even had a save state at that boss to practice before doing more legit runs to beat it legit and man..... Brutal. I try to replicate what you did on your winning run but can't pull it off just right. I need more practice.
I was with Ryan on the initial trailer, I thought Dread kind of looked ass from that initial trailer, but I was excited to play it because it's Metroid and man it is easily my favorite game of this year. Such a great game, hopefully Mike gets around to it sometime soon because I would like to see his thoughts of it. Also, I hope Nintendo doesn't remake Super Metroid, the game is perfect imo, and doesn't need to be touched. Just work on getting us that Prime 4 Nintendo 😄
It still baffles me how people thought the game looked bad from that first trailer? I have yet to hear an explanation of what exactly the trailer did to misrepresent what the actual full game ended up being? Dread is a bigger, better, improved, and shinier Samus Returns, which itself was an already pretty well loved Metroid game. If it is only a shallow matter of graphics, then I guess the fact you ended up loving the game proves the opinion "gameplay>>>graphics" as true?
What the developers need to do next is remake Fusion. Can you imagine the Sa-X with the Emmi functionality? Jesus. Plus that was the original game Mercury Steam pitched to get working on the Metroid franchise. It all comes full circle.
Hopefully, we get a Metroid collection on the Switch featuring the four side scrolling games. It’d be nice. I’d love to see a remake of Fusion, but would also love Metroid 6.
I've been loving arcade archives on PS4. $8 is a steal. Haven't noticed any lag whatsoever with any of the games I've purchased so far. Jealous of switch users though as they get Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers on the list. Waiting for Galaga though, like what the fuck?
The problem with the old games that get hacks to make them easier is that sometimes that hack breaks the game. However, other times it can improve it. The original vision of the developers is not perfect, they were wrong often, in fact, more often than not, when you read their talks about those games they look clueless. Like, we were fortunate the games ended up being good because the guys didn't actually know what they were doing, and that's normal... back then, videogames were quite experimental. Kids with 20 years old and with zero experience made some of the most successful games ever. So, I would look each game separately. Sometimes the hack could IMPROVE the experience, at the cost of losing the original experience. The original experience was YOUR experience, and maybe you are fond of it, but maybe nostalgia is talking through your lips. Maybe the new ways to play the game bring out a better experience for most people. Maybe.
I mostly disagree with the conversation around 30:00 . I work for a living, and want to enjoy video games. I'm not good at video games, and don't enjoy struggling. Feel free to think I'm not enjoying them the way you think I should...but I dont enjoy that. And when talking about "cheats"...where does one draw a line? The Konami code? Is someone not allowed to enjoy more of the game they otherwise couldn't without it?

Wpuld be great if yall dedicate a whole podcast to you two talking about arcade game systems like Ryan did here, that shit was super interesting.

@mike @ryan You mentioned Metroid dread being Metroid 4 which is NOT correct. Metroid 4 is going to be a completely separate Metroid game in the style of the prime series. This is NOT metroid 4.
Right at the end it bears clarification: the trailer Mike is talking about was Metroid Prime 4 which it’s own separate continuity. Metroid Dread is the Metroid 5 of the 2D series which was rumored for ages starting as a Nintendo DS game that couldn’t get out from development hell. This incarnation of Metroid Dread was just announced this summer at E3 so that Prime 4 trailer from 4 years ago couldn’t have been this game.

Majority of the mainstream games on the Atari 2600 are awesome. Only the unknown games are trash.
@Mike Don't play Metroid Dread. Also just play what you want, don't think of yourself as in the nintendo/retro console box.
without walkthrough metroid 1 is impossible
if you are not a boomer who already paid for nintendo power back in 1770 and read all the secrets and just revel in nostalgia
shooting blocks that look exactly the same as other unshootable blocks?
red doors? cryo? terrible last boss? infinitely respawning enemies? no analog controls but a ton of flying enemies?
well i can do that too fallout is extremely easy game to play you don't even need a manual (because i was already taught how to play it back in me childhood by a guy who was taught by other guy etc etc in a chain of arkane knowledge of bad outdated GUIs passed from guy to guy #)
same goes for zelda with burning bush
what sense of discovery in metroid? you discover a blue room with same enemies after you saw a blue room with same enemies, because it's different from the same room but pink with the same enemies?
Why tf do we have to wait two days

Metroid its a fucking masterpiece
Nothing wrong with messing around with cheat codes now and then. Maybe you just wanna blast missiles and screw jump around.
Hopefully Yaz (Yazoo) sues the shit out of you over that intro song.

@@TalkAboutGames Pretty decent design for an Atari game.
