So there were a few comments from people who didn't seem to really understand the power center. A good way to sort of visualize this is to get a friend/family member/acquaintance/friendly neighborhood spider-man to hold a small object next to you. This object is going to represent your power center. While standing still, try to lean into the direction of the object with your whole body. Imagine that it's a magnet pulling you in. Try it out with a few different positions until you get the idea. When drawing it out, you can also just put a dot on the page to remind yourself where the center is. Hope that sort of clears things up.
Ando do you any drawing/animation programs you would recommend for drawing or practicing? (Perfeably a free program) I would like to know and try to improve my current drawing style.
As far as free programs go, I used to use Gimp in high school and I've also played around with Krita a bit in the past few years. I tend to use Clip studio the most, but it isn't free. Still, it's really affordable and goes on sale a lot, so check that one out if you can. Honestly though, never underestimate the power of paper and pencil, especially if you're trying to learn the basics. I'm not sure on what your level of skill is, but I just want to say that fancy tools and programs can really only take you so far if you don't have a foundation to work off of, so if you're still really new to art I would recommend getting a rudimentary understanding of how to sketch on paper first before making the leap to digital. I hope that helps!
The final like 10 seconds of the video I am disappointed in you, Gunjo Fury, you show your lack of culture by not watching videos till the end and commenting Yare yare daze...
second step: realize that Araki got his inspiration for poses from both classical art (esp sculptures) and fashion magazines and use those as references
HEY!! Ando notice this please, I'm a young and beginner artist and I go to your channel for advice on drawing. I really like your artstyle because it is cartoon-ish yet realistic, It has good shading and a nice pallete which is light on the eyes. Your videos are REALLY helpful to me and improved my art well. I am currently making animations and as i look through them they they drastically changed positively. I just like your videos so much that I wrote all of this for you. :)
I have difficulties when trying to pose some of my characters because I like doing them together so.. when I try to get one to pose like an adventurerer(?) My main oc Uzi is actually a friendly and bubbly character but doesn't like running around and acting crazy. She's only like that around friends. She usually acts silent and stubborn until she trusts someone enough to open up.
THIS, is literally helped me in lots of cases, one example is.. i have a strong silent type character (you can see him in my profile picture), I pretty much nailed the posture, and some generic poses, and etc.. But I’ve never really have a energetic or adventurous, and all that type of characters, So i tried to study it , what makes what.. and I’m gladly came across this video, and surprisingly helping me in many ways, thank you @Ando
personally, i'd say i kind of already know how to pose characters since body language is an interesting subject for me. My problem is when people request me to draw their characters, their art style is usually very... simplified, not a lot of expression, not a lot of detail, and my art style is more expressive and leaning towards realistic. i always try to ask them stuff like "what is the characater like?" or "what type of personality they have" but they dont seem to understand how is that related. the only time i draw characters upright and with no movement is when im drawing a reference for them.
Another excellent video! I’ve never even thought about balance, line of action and the center point that much. Thank you! I also love the mixed media you use as examples.
This is the most fucking helpful pose guide!!! A lot of other ones aren’t that great for ways to create dynamic poses without worrying about accuracate anatomy at the same time
This is quite the helpful thing, I can really work on my energetic and prideful character joyfly, and her awkward and gently best friend Micah. Even though they are four legged the overall advice is much appreciated and gave me new ideas to help advance into new poses for personalities. Thanks!
One tip I have... if you want some extra characterization for a silhouette try having the hair flowing outward a little bit... or pulled over the shoulder... or maybe they’re playing with it...
I had this one character I’d use to draw all the weird dynamic poses, with different kinds of clothing in different art styles. It actually helped me develop him as a character and get better and drawing posing. It was sooo fun, and still is. I recommend you TRY the same. If you don’t like it you can just not do it anymore, but it’s an awesome tip that helped me for years
this was extremely helpful, thank you so much! there is always sth lacking in my art or rather I am so clueless what to do with the pose so it always ends up looking too boring or stiff, these tips opened my eyes basically. I'm definitely rewatching this many times to completely get the ideas down!
Ando: *makes a video about how to draw a character posing to better fit the story and their surroundings and all that stuff* Me is working on a comic where I am not the artists I am the writer I have no artistic skill and am going to put in no input into drawing the characters other than an idea of what they look like: mhm yes very helpful 😌
Where you put the center is really up to you. Just pick a point (you can draw a dot to represent it if that helps) and have the character lean into it. Imagine it's a magnetic force that attracts the character to it. A good way to get the hang of it is to have a friend hold up an object near you and without moving from your spot, lean in the direction of the object with your whole body. If you can do it in front of a mirror or take pictures for reference that's even better. As far as where you should put the center, it really depends on your character's typical body language as well as their mood and what they're doing. Positive emotions tend to be higher and negative emotions tend to be lower, but that's not always the case so use your own discretion when picking a center. I know it's kind of confusing (a lot of techniques are) but if you take the time to study them you'll really get the hang of it.
I am so happy to find a guide like this - I always found pose tutorials that helped with making posters or how to draw them - which is good and all, I learned a lot from them. But I had trouble _coming up_ with poses for my characters. I used all the same ones because I didn't really have a good idea what to do. This is really helpful!!
also, something i do: when you are posing a character, you can do more poses for them if they aren't the person that they are in the first pose, like: when a character has a pose that acts like a badass, but then there's a pose where they are more friendly. which is what i do with my characters!

Thank you for teaching me about the Power Centre technique. Even though I've worked for years with Contrapposto, lines of action, dynamism and conveying expression and personality through poses, I have never known of the Power Centre. Mind was blown actually, lol, can't believe I hadn't heard about it sooner. Again, thank you.

I love your videos- but your music is a little distracting and kind of drowns you out (see 8:37 for one of the worst points) songs with strong or sharp piano should really be played a lot lower
In terms of poses, I also try to come up with how, exactly, they might end up moving or what body language they have when feeling certain emotions. To the point of giving them small 'quirks' and 'habits' they do, when feeling that way. Example, an embarrassed or uncomfortable character fiddling with their fingers, or just having the habit of playing with a strand of their hair, even while standing still. Small gestures making a character more 'real'.

"The character may seem at ease"
It hurts a lot more than it looks. Demons sweat on the inside and handle it on the outside with speed stick.
I think the idea is that a character in an extremely uncomfortable position while looking at ease is unsettling, which is a great tool for horror.

Oh my gosh I’ve loved lackadaisy for so long, I can’t believe someone else knows it

I know it's kind of confusing (a lot of techniques are) but if you take the time to study them you'll really get the hang of it.

also, something i do:
when you are posing a character, you can do more poses for them if they aren't the person that they are in the first pose, like: when a character has a pose that acts like a badass, but then there's a pose where they are more friendly.
