    I totally understand your frustration from a film maker's perspective. And while I could certainly write a novel on the topic of music licensing & micro-licensing, I'll say that overall it's probably a good thing that a site like epidemic or music bed wouldn't let you use music for anything outside of personal use (Vlogs, personal videos, etc...). I get the frustration on the spec ad side of things, but I think they do it to protect their artists and composers too. Music is so widely undervalued these days, and it often times feels like a crawl to the bottom. I'm trying not to be biased about this at all (For full transparency I am a composer who makes my living from licensing music). I don't write music for Epidemic, Artlist, or music bed, but hearing that art list's pro plan covers commercial use for a roughly $20 subscription plan is definitely not sustainable. I think it should be a case by case basis depending on the client. This is where things can get grey offering micro licenses, because so many youtubers/filmmakers will dabble with commercial gigs too. It's really important to know what type of licenses you're agreeing to. Like I mentioned, I definitely understand your frustration with these companies, but knowing that companies like music bed cracks down on the commercial licenses is a green flag in my book overall. I'd rather put my high quality music in the hands of a company that would protect their artist's rights .
    The second you get any brand involved (Spec ad or not), the license should move to a business license as opposed to the personal license you signed up for. Personal use should stay personal use, and business should apply to more commercial work.
    Regardless, this was a great video and I loved hearing your perspective on this!

      Thanks for your comment. Appreciate hearing this from the other side of things!
      Musicbed went back on this and I respect that they changed their terms after this. Spec ads and reels are now supposed to be covered. Which makes sense, as a lot of young/beginner filmmakers are playing around with spec ads and reels without ever getting jobs from it. I understand that it at some point COULD lead to commercial work, but if it's a self funded video I don't think it should be considered commercial.
      And thanks for the positive feedback!

    I once paid thousands of $ for a music license from Musicbed. A single song since it was a large sponsor. They had a hidden clause that disallowed google ad revenue and so they still claimed my video. This despite me being VERY clear about what I needed from the license. There is other stuff I don't wanna talk about publicly, but Musicbed/Film Supply are not creator friendly.
    I use Epidemic, Monstercat, & Artlist now depending on my needs now and they have all treated me well. Although I agree having to approve each individual video does get tedious with client work.

    We were using Artlist for years. It’s a scam. They say that you have no problems using it on TikTok or RUclips… lies. Flagged all the time. We cancelled. Then they’ve told us the tracks we have licenses for only covers IF we continuously keep the license!!! So anything created after the license end even though we previously had unlimited usage of the track, now it has limits. False advertising. Beware

    This review is pure gold! I used Epidemic Sound to make videos, and that was just fine. Recently I`ve started to create non-talking shorts where the right song will be the key to the specific mood. Trending, uploaded music on RUclips suits me perfectly! But as I know, I wouldn`t be able to monetize those videos (another super-unclear thing), if I`ll ever get the monetization lol. So I was struggling with what to choose: cool mood, or opportunity to monetize in the future! I`m happy that I have a reason to try Artlist, as you brought up your experience and told it`s def not bad))

      Hi, there’s anotger option: working with composers directly to get bespoke tailor-made music for your films should be a viable go-to part of filmmakers’ productions.
      These aforementioned music libraries have a very cheap lure but their licensing can be a minefield.
      Working with composers on a work-for-hire basis and directly licensing their music typically doesn’t cost much for online use. Most composers should be able to help you out with understanding all this.

    Musicbed also don't make it 100% clear that most of their music will get a copyright claim on RUclips.
    So even though you have a valid license, if your channel is monetised, you won't get the money.
    Like, what's the point in the license then? I could've got the song from a digital store for a dollor & let the artist get the youtube money.

    Filmmakers should stop using all three of these amateurish, scamming companies and source music from reputable PRO publishers or directly from composers.

      This is a very important issue. Also something I don't know how to solve as most filmmakers don't have the budget to pay for the composers. How about Audiio? As hobbyist, that may use music for personal projects every now and then, I wanted to have 'non subscription' type option, and Audiio offered it. They have also quite good licensing ("The license covers an unlimited number of downloads for your content, including your personal and client projects", "Your content is covered for promotional use for client projects", "Each license we issue for your projects is for perpetual, ongoing use and never expires even if you cancel").
    But like I said, I'm not professional, and just doing things for personal fun/hobby. But I really would like to know if their lifetime deal is good or not.
    (I think I got discount for it when I get it, maybe it was 50% of or so.)

      Great questions! I think that it really depends on your needs. I have heard a lot of good things about Audiio lately, so I am sure it is great. Personally, I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I should!

    • @HNMusicVideos

      I use both Artlist and Audiio plus a couple of others. If you only want to pay for one, Artlist is the best. Audiio is good, but it's less variety. I purchased a lifetime plan from Audioo for only $199 a couple of years ago, so it's good for ever with no additional payments. They have that same deal running now. If you go that route, that's all you'll ever pay with no need to pay for renewals. However, Artlist has more and better music, in my opinion. I guess it all depends on your taste.

    • @WebworxAgency
      @WebworxAgency 11 месяцев назад

      Audiio is terrible. There library is small and I often found that I was seeing the same track in multiple genres. Also I forgot about the subscription and went to cancel it and found out they charged my card the day before. I asked for a refund and they denied me due to their T and C. I explained I hadn’t used their service for months and didn’t want another year of service. They said they didn’t care. Eventually they stopped responding to my emails. Their customer service was the most unprofessional I’ve ever dealt with. Avoid them at all costs

      @@kriswarwick I only have 350, I spent 3 months last fall doing consistent weekly long form release & weekly live show trying to find my voice and nail down my niche, then took 10 months off then came back full time two weeks ago. Its a struggle, and every little comment, like or sub is fuel. People don't know that, but it's true.
      Also I use Epidemic, and also used them on another channel from 2016-2018 and never had an issue and the music is very good, if a little euro-centric for US market tastes, but so many royalty free sites have homogenized social media music since back then, it doesn't matter as much anymore. It's all sort of the same.

    Thank you for your honest video. You will get more views and subs one day, as this is a direct and honest video reviewing the music platforms available today(2024).
    I considered Epidemic as it felt like a great choice. Got a paid sub, liked a few songs, downloaded one. I got my entire project ready.
    Before posting the song, I'm thinking, should I attribute the song? What does the license say?
    And then I find out, you cannot use the song as just a standalone song, you cannot use the song as just a music listening experience song.
    So if you are doing something like cinematic music videos or motion graphics music visualizer music videos, save yourself the time and the money. EPIDEMIC SOUNDS WILL NOT ALLOW IT, EVEN IF YOU'RE SUBSCRIBED.
    That's how it is. Schade.
    Danke!

    • @kriswarwick
      @kriswarwick  Год назад +1

      I think this is a great question. If you consider the fact that the $400 generates more money for you, it’s not too bad. But also remember that the artists need to get paid, and Artlist has a business to run.
      Today I have a revenue of more than $200 000 USD so I understand that the price might seem more fair to me, than to someone who just started out. But then again, I’ve been paying that since I started out and back then I barely had income.

      If you haven’t paid to use it, or have the rights to use it, you probably can’t use it. By having a subscription with one of the mentioned providers (or any other music service) it will be hard to use music for your videos :)
