Take it from a 60-year-old who races about once a month: 2:49 is awesome. Take courage. You’re just getting started! Racing and training are different beasts; embrace them both and celebrate every adventure, especially the unexpected and even the occasional disappointments. You have an amazing family. The rest is vanity. Congratulations!

I think it's amazing the standard that you're holding yourself to, wanting to improve on your current PR considering a 2:49 marathon for a hobby jogger is UNREAL! The fact that you're only 49 minutes behind the fastest marathoner is insaaaaane. You've been training for 3 years so there's no telling how fast you can go in the next couple years. You are crushing it! And you have a wonderful wife and kiddos.

nice job. I was rooting for ya! That dip in the 17 18 miles could be nutrition or being in no-mans land if running alone. Good that you rallied. 2:49 is great progression. More marathon experience and you'll keep moving up. My buddy in Coast Guard got 3rd there in 2:43, his debut marathon and runs less than 60 miles a week... but ran in college & was sub 4:10 miler.

Congrats dude. I’m by no means an expert, but would be curious to see what you would run with a block of training that was more quality focused. 2 workouts, total recovery jogs between sessions, and quality long run. Do this cycle for 12 weeks etc. because you have a huge base layer now I think it would work and in order to get to sub 2hr 40 or sub 2hr 30 especially you have to train at faster speeds regularly to make fast Mara pace efficient. More mileage which would mostly result in less quality workouts.

Great video and race,congrats..I like the after race analysis..I always go over mine and figure out what worked best and what wasn't good..every race that didn't go well is usually a poor shoe choice..a fast shoe is usually not a great marathon shoe..if my shoe is distracting in any way it gets into my head and there goes my execution..my best races are when I forget I have race shoes on..poor pre-race nutrition or clothing choices are also issues ..anything that is a distraction takes you off your game..hitting a couple of slow miles around 18-20mi pt is normal..1 other thing is to do your long runs ,22-24 mi, all at the same time..if you want to do double days use 1 of them as 5-6 mi speed run and the other as 12mi farlek run..I never getting anything out of the short speed sessions..start out at conservative pace and slowly ramp up into the pace and then finish with what you got left..AND ALWAYS remember it's just another race so learn from it and start planning for the next one..great job🎉🎉🎉

I thought you would choose to run in the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4....
You ran a 2:55 marathon distance while still in training when you weren't really pushing yourself to the limit...A sure bet, I thought, to give you the confidence that it would serve you well when the adrenaline was really pumping..
Maybe you gave too much weightage to your own classification of the Endorphin Pro 4s as 3 and half hours plus marathon racing shoes...
    My two bits...
Congrats and well done for the PR! All the best for the next one!

Great review and great race. Question.. You mentioned that Sky Paris was not comfortable in warmup and cooldown. How about the Edge Paris? Better in the Warmup and cooldown? I ask because I am a heel striker and slow runner.

    • @JeatBunkie
      @JeatBunkie 6 месяцев назад +1

If you’re a heel striker just go with another shoe. Both metaspeed shoes are designed to go fast, and they are pretty narrow at the heel so you would struggle

Edge felt slightly better to me at jogging paces but neither of them would be my first choice for anything slower than a 3 hour marathon. And even for 2:40 to 3 hours, I think there are better options like Endorphin Pro 4 and New Balance SC Elite v4 - unless you are a Vaporfly fan. Then you will love the Paris shoes

I think 2:49 is fantastic! Especially considering this is your 2nd marathon only. 6th place overall/gender and 2nd place in age group is incredible. I told you so in Strava as well. Celebrate it because you earned it by hard work. Rest and recover and I think you will do better in Chicago.
Note: Post race you want to replenish carbs but most importantly immediately after the race is start with protein so your body start repairing the damaged tissues by breaking the protein to amino acids.
Note2: I think you having a dip at mile 20 or so is because of fueling. Your carb supplementation was not sufficient, and you had dropped from pace until your body could produce more ATP to power your muscles. Maybe a bit slower start could have been better until you were able to more naturally settle into the race.

I feel too many folks chasing super high mileage. I’ve been in 2:40 shape peaking at 70ish. Quality workouts 3 times a week. I found the most benefit marathon wise from a lot of tempo work.

Nice love to hear that. What are your favorite tempo style workouts and what pace do you run them relative to that ~6:00 race pace?

I've been Vegan over 10 years and have been a cyclist road/mtb, Muay Thai, got into running seriously over the last 2.5 years and wanted to just go sub 9 minutes pace for a marathon but accomplished that in my training (kinda dumb but ran 8:57 pace) then 3:40 marathon in S.F. hilly race, then 3:05:21 at CIM, ran some more marathons but didn't do it right but still good times... 2023 CIM ran a 3:04:41
If I accomplish my marathon goal I'm done then going back to my cycling goals. I've Everested twice and wanna do a 24 hour ride and a bunch of other crazy stuff.
Keep up the Rad-Life efforts and Imma sub to you and seriously congratulations because that's an amazing time you should be proud of.

I think you’ve got your answer dude. You didn’t do enough workouts at marathon and sub marathon pace. Simply running miles isn’t it, it’s running miles, at the relevant paces consistently overtime that gets you ‘faster’.

I think you're right that your current mileage is plenty of volume. Given your experience with this race, a 22 mile long run where you hit your target MP at mile 15-16 and hold it for 4-5 miles could train you to get through those miles at pace.

You can't get down about a PR at the marathon, it is a cruel distance where so much can go wrong. I can run a half and I know what my time will be within a minute or 2. But the full can go so horribly wrong at mile 10...but you won't know it till mile 20-22. Take the win, and stack another block, and enjoy Chicago!
Running Chicago 2024 myself, assuming I am healthy, and my Spring marathon is on May 12th...which I'm hoping gets me a bib for Boston 2025.
I know the 5mm drop won't work for me at the full marathon, but I really wanna try it at the half marathon this fall when I hope to go sub 1:30. At the full, it's all about the airpods. I'd even consider running a marathon in the Tempo Next% with zero concerns, those airpods are magical for me.

Congrats on the sub 2:50, I'm sure you'll be hitting sub 2:45 for Chicago! Boston qualifier banked for next year. Fordyruns says a bottle of full sugar coca cola is the key immediately post race to replenish the body's glycogen, can confirm it works.
