Brad just really needs to learn his understanding only goes back as far as his age takes him. Brad the 70;s was not even an explainable time. From 1970 to 1975. I went from a greaser. To a jock. To a frock. To a freak and ended with being a dirtball. The amazing thing is nobody cared. We as kids where actually free. Basically no kid has been free like those of the 70;s since then.
Damn ... I was just having this very same discussion today with a neighbor... how free we were to shift around and do a bunch of different things that weren't normally grouped together... and people accepted it. Nobody gave a shit.
David Lee Roth wrote the lyrics around a single phrase, "Go ahead and Jump." He came up with the line after watching the news and seeing a man on top of the Arco Tower threatening to commit suicide. He thought there's always at least one person in the crowd yelling go ahead and jump. There's a lot more about the song. Parts of it were written while in their tour bus long before it ever grew to a full song. They'd keep going back to what they had and fill in the blanks.
some of the chords in Jazz were unheard of by many 60's bands.. but when they did (the Beatles hearing them demoed in a music shop for example) they bought them into mainstream and changed things up a great deal.
A lot of people have told me this was a song about a man who finally accepts that suicide is the better option. Hence, he says “you might as well jump.” However, I’ve always doubted that due to the lyrics and the upbeat nature of the music.
There are lots of upbeat songs that sound fun and happy but have very depressing lyrics. However it's not the case for this song. Not a big fan of Panama, it's literally about David Lee Roth's Lamborghini Panama.
Its not about optimism, its about his woman is saying about how bad life is for her and she keeps complaining. He's saying "well I've tried all I can to cheer you up, if things are really that bad you might as well jump out the window of the penthouse". On a side note when this song was big in the charts there was a traffic jam in new York because a woman was threatening to jump off a bridge, it was on the news and everything, the most requested song on the local radio station during this stand off was Jump by Van Halen lol. So no its not about optimism, what do you think "might as well jump, go ahead jump" means?
@@thatsjustlikeyouropinionma3025 I don't think so, there is too little in the lyrics to go on, but it seems more like he's telling some girl to come on to him. @@maneatingpie2338 No..... that's the story of how the song was written, he is saying shake yourself out of it or you may as well jump out the window. He's not telling her to top herself, he is saying why you gotta be like this all the time, if this is gonna be your attitude towards life go ahead.....JUMP!. Davis Lee Roth wrote the song after seeing a man jump to his death, he then said to his then girlfriend "you think your life is tough? think of that guy" again its not about trying to get her to jump he's trying to change her mindset from being a drama queen and arguing about everything and have some fun. 1984, 14 going on 15, and this album drops. Life hasn’t been the same since, it changed many of us, forever. David Lee Roth, the lead singer retired recently. He's a year older than I am. I always liked their music, and I preferred David Lee Roth over Sammy Hagar.
Van Halen was one of the ICONIC bands from the '80's. The lead singer, David Lee Roth, was one of the Greatest front men. David Lee Roth, during that time studied Martial Arts and that's why he was so athletic and nimble. Eddie Van Halen was one of the Greatest lead guitarist and synthesizer player from the '80's. RIP Eddie Van Halen. Rock On Van Halen!!! 🤘🤟✊🤙👊💥🔥
You have no idea the level of excitement that was in the air when rumor of a new VAN HALEN album coming soon happenned. This was music History alongside the BEATLES with breakthrough amazement.
This video debuted on MTV at the strike of midnight on New Years Eve going from 1983 into 1984. 1984 was the name of the album the song is off of. I was 10 at the time.
The audio from Jump is used a lot around NBA shows from the talk shows to entering game time. The true meaning behind the song is if you want something bad enough you need to face your fears and just jump into it.
Legend say the inspiration for the lyrics came from a guy who was on a roof top menacing to jump from it and put an end to his life. Everyone was yelling at him "Don´t Jump!" and David Lee Roth, watching the event on TV though about the opposite: "Jump!" as "just do it". But not literally to take his life, rather than that "Jump" is telling to that guy to take the bull by the horns and work for his hapiness. In the lyrics you can see how David talks to him: "You got it tough?, I´ve seen the Toughest around. And I know you feel, you got to roll with the punches to get to what´s real". He is telling the guy, that sure life is hard, but you need to put the effort to make it work.
The quintessential Van Halen song. A standard for all Rock songs. When I was a professional drummer I ate this song up in practice a thousand times. Of course I practiced all day too so I can say that about many songs. Man, I dig this tune.

Hey Lex, To answer your question from 5:10-5:13; "people don't change, only times change". That is an absolutely true and brilliant quote. Carol Brady (Florence Henderson) said that on an episode of the Brady Bunch when Bobby wanted to emulate Jesse James, and I never forgot it. TV doesn't have that kind of quality anymore.
He's saying he lives life at a good energy. you got it tough, he knows just how you feel, he has it tough at times, but be tough enough to handle it. he is saying rolling with the punches lets us get to what we're ready to work for, for what's real. Not letting things get him down, (thinking of himself as attractive )standing with his back against the record machine (checking out ladies) 'hey girl, check me out over here. I know that I ain't the worst that you've seen, c'mon and jump, might as well jump( on this). and someone yells out 'hey, how are you?' so he yells back, 'who said that, baby, how you been?' he's saying you won't know that until you begin. the song is a snapshot. a few seconds conversation. It is a 4 decades long journey as well so the message, wanna know where you'll be on the journey to getting what you want? go ahead and jump, roll with the punches, and get to what's real
Another great reaction guys. Interesting take on the lyric "record machine". I always took that to be him leaning against a juke box in a bar or something, but maybe he is talking about the music industry. Who knows, David Lee Roth's lyrics are usually pretty abstract. Love to see a reaction to Van Halen's Mean Streets or Little Dreamer
The song was written about about a man that was getting ready to jump off a building..and the record producer and David Lee Roth saw him and Dave said might as well Jump...and then the producer was like that's what you have to write about..so then Dave wrote the lyrics for jump
I remember being at high school and a friend lent me a tape to play in my walkman and Jump was on it. That first time I heard it I was in love with the song.
A lot of VH fans were really bummed by this song when it first came out. They didn't like Eddie spending so much of his time on the keyboards... they wanted to hear his soaring guitar riffs, and not much else...
The Chicago Cubs used intro of Jump at all home games, back in 84, 85? 1st #1 song for these guys, then Roth left after one of the most successful arena tours(15,000 + each show). 99 out of a 100 dates sold out. Yeah, they laid the groundwork for great rock shows.
The lyrical story about Jump has something to do with David Lee Roth over hearing on the radio news that cops were trying to prevent someone from comitting suicide by jumping off a bridge. As traffic and all were getting held up, I think thats when DLR came up with "oh might as well just jump!"
This song used to be played constantly on MTV when they actually played music, etc.. Plus, on the radio.. Lex likes 80's music, and it cracks me up.. Brad is always contemplating what the meaning is, but it's not about meaning most of the time, but just about girls, cars, and long cigars and having fun... ! ! ! ! ! 🤣😂🤣 The 80's were so fun.. Guys use to hang around the juke box to talk to the ladies when they went to put a coin in to select a song, you know, flirt. Remember the era here, nothing digital then so that's how you met people back then. Good, fun, all around VH but this was a big change for us with Ed playing keyboards. Missing him big time. RIP sweet Ed, we are all still rockin to ya!! ❤👍🏽
I was 5 when this song was a hit. Jumping was my new walk. No matter what it was. It got me in tons of trouble because I'd jump off my desk, I'd jump off anything I was playing on. At home? Table, sofa, chair, my bed, everything was a place to jump from at 5. lmfao Surprisingly enough, I never had to have any surgery. I never broke my face. lol
Ha! I see it's already been addressed in the comments, but I think part of the confusion is just literally just technological... Brad and Lex likely have never seen an old-school "record machine", aka jukebox. Yeah, they used to have records in them. And yeah, the lyric, he's trying to pick up a girl in a bar (where they had jukeboxes). "I ain't the worst that you've seen... Go ahead and jump!" Take a leap, YOLO, etc. :-) Now I see Lex's Pink Floyd T-shirt... if you actually want to hear a song that is talking about the music industry "machine" there is "Welcome to the Machine". Very different vibe.
Good points on the music industry and bands. So many great bands from the 70s changed their sound in the 80s and lost me somewhat because of it. I know mtv changed a lot of things, but I really wonder what was really going on behind the scenes?
It makes me laugh every time the camera goes to the keyboard since it's covered in dust. You would think they would have cleaned for a video. Totally Van Halen!
It's so funny how you guys see record machine as the industry which is fine since they were before your time. It's a generation thing. Love your channel.
I guess the lyrics are just there to fill out the song. But, I read somewhere that Roth was out walking one day and saw a man out on the ledge and the crowd bellow and, well you get the picture. It really changed the perspective of the song when I read that.

@@mnomadvfx you have a valid point but i tend to enjoy things for what they are i dont look deep into it and try to break it down. if i watch it and i enjoy it through and through then thats that. im also more of an action junkie then i am story. if something has really good fight scenes then the story matters less to me honestly.
@@mnomadvfx but the nostalgia is just a back drop to the message of the movie. And it covers all eras of entertainment.
I just did, guess I was late.
My old ass died laughing at Brad’s “record machine” interpretation.
What's a frock?
@@MrConstant23. a person who smoked pot and partied but still played sports.
@@MrConstant23. A freak-jock...aka...frock.
Really?, kids today are as free as in 1975. You just got old.
I just realized how this song was mostly drums and keyboard, a rarity for 80's rock.
These guys were actually jazz musicians cashing in with some of the best pop rock ever created, love it! 🙏
some of the chords in Jazz were unheard of by many 60's bands.. but when they did (the Beatles hearing them demoed in a music shop for example) they bought them into mainstream and changed things up a great deal.
The lyrical meaning of the song boils down to take a chance (Jump) at life, whatever it is, only then will you succeed, or get what you're after.
you weren't listening to the lyrics, obviously
@@paulstanitz2723 Yah, that interpretation was based on Ed's solo. Please, enlighten us...
@@dominysynclair "You can't deal with the record machine so you might as well jump"(off the nearest bridge)

Pull up the lyrics . This is a song about optimism and living large.
This album is epic.
Have you done Panama yet?
But I suppose music lyrics are usually meant to be interpreted differently by different people. Everyone gets something different out of it, that's how art works I suppose.
@@maneatingpie2338
No..... that's the story of how the song was written, he is saying shake yourself out of it or you may as well jump out the window. So yeah its pretty dark. rolling stone magazine put it down as one of the most misinterpreted songs ever along with Bruce Springsteen's born in the USA and the police single I'll be watching you.
This song is ICONIC 1980s and played everywhere, and it makes me so happy! I absolutely love this song and fun video. VH was just so amazingly good.
A lot of musical artists tend to exhibit a hard appearance by scowling at the camera but Eddie always had this big warm smile that just made you happy to see him.
1984, 14 going on 15, and this album drops. Life hasn’t been the same since, it changed many of us, forever.
It really does make me sad the rest of y’all missed out on these years, everyone is just so miserable now. Why can’t all of you just get off Twitter, grab a drink, put on some music and enjoy life? It’s really not that difficult, and is a lot less stressful than being freaked out all the time.
These songs, and this period, is one of those things that defines us as Gen X. Music is our medicine, it makes us right.
Amen brother. Most people born after Gen X are pussies and always look for a reason to feel sorry for themselves.
Seeing that Pink Floyd Shirt on you ...makes my heart smile.i am so happy when you really love a Band because then we can all share in the joy. Thank you so much for listening to the songs of my youth. ❤❤❤
Diamond Dave was really into martial arts. I saw them in concert several years ago in New Orleans and he STILL can jump like that!
Dave's leaning up against a jukebox, and is telling the girl who's checking him out to JUMP at the opportunity.
The song is about jumping at an opportunity. Taking a risk.
lol nope. The record machine is actually the multri-track. If you listen to DLR interviews he very rarely listened to anybody else's music. SO why would he leaning on a jukebox? To play his own songs? Not even Dave was that vain. Check my earlier post I explain better there.
No the song is about suicide JUMP off a building. DLR said when he wrote the lyrics.
Maybe I’m simple, but the record machine is literally where you select your tunes and is good place to check out women coming in.
Roth is not the go to for profound lyrics.
'Mean Street' has to be next. Has a slightly darker/cooler groove to it, and of course...it bangs. Listen for the amazing guitar intro
And then "Push comes to shove" from the same album.
Yeah, Jump is probably my least favorite song by DLR.VH.All other pre 1984 VH songs are better..IMHO...Fair Warning is my favorite VH album...Again IMO,"Unchained" is one of the greatest riffs of all time
Van Halen is all about fun and great energy !..And how cool is it watching Lex enjoying Van Halen wearing a Pink Floyd T Shirt !!! ..
You both got the meaning of the song without meaning to. It's about rolling with whatever life throws at you & getting through it. 💙 from Texas!
Ohh 😯 look who decided to do a music video finally. Keep em comin'!!! ✌️
Jump !!! Van Halen musique d'intro du club de football français (Marseille) Olympique de Marseille 💙☝️🔥😁
This came out my sophomore year. I would walk in the parking lot and it seemed like every other car was blasting this song. A classic!
This video debuted on MTV at the strike of midnight on New Years Eve going from 1983 into 1984. 1984 was the name of the album the song is off of. I was 10 at the time.
The record machine is a jukebox
The audio from Jump is used a lot around NBA shows from the talk shows to entering game time. The true meaning behind the song is if you want something bad enough you need to face your fears and just jump into it.
This was my "clean your bedroom" song when I was a kid!!! Put it on my record player and let it spin over and over.
Agreed, songs are a feeling, emotion a complete overall vibe ,lyrics words ,give everything substance
3:38 -- Cracks me up that VH couldn't even dust off the keyboard for the video. Come on, guys! LOL
one of my all time favorite videos--great song, charisma, grinning Eddie, gymnastics--GOT IT ALL GOIN' ON!!!!!!!!!
The quintessential Van Halen song. A standard for all Rock songs. When I was a professional drummer I ate this song up in practice a thousand times. Of course I practiced all day too so I can say that about many songs. Man, I dig this tune.
"Will things ever change, or will we just perpetually be the same" - Lex 2021/ love the quote

We still party to these songs from our era. Great times and great songs!
I was 13 when the album "1984" came out, how I wish I could turn back the clock. So much amazing music was made in the 80s the charts were on fire with hit after hit coming out you could hardly keep up.
I love her excitement
Hey Lex, To answer your question from 5:10-5:13; "people don't change, only times change". That is an absolutely true and brilliant quote. Carol Brady (Florence Henderson) said that on an episode of the Brady Bunch when Bobby wanted to emulate Jesse James, and I never forgot it. TV doesn't have that kind of quality anymore.
80's were my teen years! the best era of all time hands down!
It is a 4 decades long journey as well
so the message, wanna know where you'll be on the journey to getting what you want?
go ahead and jump, roll with the punches, and get to what's real
Why do I like watching your videos so much. Its so weird that I feel good about watching vids with two strangers. What ever it is keep it up.
Another great reaction guys. Interesting take on the lyric "record machine".
I always took that to be him leaning against a juke box in a bar or something,
but maybe he is talking about the music industry. Who knows, David Lee Roth's lyrics are usually pretty abstract.
Love to see a reaction to Van Halen's Mean Streets or Little Dreamer
Means Streets for sure…
I always misheard that line. I always thought he said "wrecking machine" and was leaning against a car. Still a great song.
@@russellgarmeson6605 Me too. Not that it matters much. His lyrics were more about vibe than meaning, seems to me.
The song was written about about a man that was getting ready to jump off a building..and the record producer and David Lee Roth saw him and Dave said might as well Jump...and then the producer was like that's what you have to write about..so then Dave wrote the lyrics for jump
So glad you did the original video. It gives a visual of the band having fun with a fun song
It did make everyone a VH fan though. 1984 launched them to the forefront of 80s music.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to these 80’s songs. It was an extremely awesome time to grow up in!
The song is about "just going for it"...taking a chance....jumping into something head first regardless of the outcome....hence the title "JUMP!"
They were so much fun to watch back in the day on MTV when it was Music TV! My kids were teenagers and it was great!
It brings me GREAT JOY SEEING YOU GUYS BEING SO INTO......ALL FORMS OF......VAN HALEN.....I luv u guys & girls...!!!??
This song used to be played constantly on MTV when they actually played music, etc.. Plus, on the radio.. Lex likes 80's music, and it cracks me up.. Brad is always contemplating what the meaning is, but it's not about meaning most of the time, but just about girls, cars, and long cigars and having fun... ! ! ! ! !
🤣😂🤣
The 80's were so fun..
Thanks guys for these reactions.. You guys are good kids, (kids to me..I'm old.. ) 🤣🤣
This was used in the trailer for the movie Ready Player One a couple years ago. Perhaps why it sounded familiar. It's also a super popular song.
Lex you are absolutely right it was an awesome time to grow up as a teenager listening to all these wonderful bands , and I wouldn't change a thing rock and roll forever...✌️ holler at your boy from Texas 🤠
He has a great voice!! And is a great front man.
R.I.P.. Edward Van Halen...🍺🤘🏼
What a time to be alive maybe the biggest understatement Lex ever uttered...loved and miss the 80’s great times
RIP Eddie, u are surely missed by millions, u were/are still the best!!!
David Lee Roth looked like he was taking the piss constantly, he always cracked me up.
What a fun time to be alive back then.
I was 5 when this song was a hit.
Jumping was my new walk.
No matter what it was.
It got me in tons of trouble because I'd jump off my desk, I'd jump off anything I was playing on.
At home? Table, sofa, chair, my bed, everything was a place to jump from at 5. lmfao
Surprisingly enough, I never had to have any surgery. I never broke my face. lol
Glad you're digging Van Halen. My favorite band of all time.
This is the summer of 84....watching the Chicago Cubs all summer on WGN and this was the song for the NL East Champs...the Chicago cubs!
Now I see Lex's Pink Floyd T-shirt... if you actually want to hear a song that is talking about the music industry "machine" there is "Welcome to the Machine". Very different vibe.
I always interpreted the song to mean if you're going to do something, JUMP in feet first with all you've got. Don't take tentative, weak baby steps.
Being backed up to the "Record Machine", is a reference to the old JUKEBOX, that you used to drop a few coins to hear good music to bad Diner food.
It's so funny how you guys see record machine as the industry which is fine since they were before your time. It's a generation thing. Love your channel.
This song has been everywhere since it came out!
I guess the lyrics are just there to fill out the song. But, I read somewhere that Roth was out walking one day and saw a man out on the ledge and the crowd bellow and, well you get the picture. It really changed the perspective of the song when I read that.
