I'm not so sure it is, because, it being set at Christmas alone is not enough for it to qualify as a Christmas movie. No, the whole Christmas theme must also play a part in the film's plot, which unfortunately it doesn't. It's an action cop movie that just happens to be set at Christmas. Iron Man 3 is set at Christmas, but most people don't class that as a Christmas movie, and the same for Batman Returns

What's so controversial about it? Die Hard IS a Xmas movie! It's set during Christmas, it has a Xmas party, has Christmas music, has a Santa reference, has a Christmas miracle, has a heartwarming moment at the end. It may not be your traditional Christmas movie, but it is a Christmas movie for sure.
Action buffs NEED this movie on Christmas. Especially as you get older, it can get really exhausting watching all these sappy "traditional" family Christmas films.
This movie and 'Home Alone' are basically the same film, except 'Die Hard' is more of an adult version. In both films, the lone protagonist spends Christmas Eve fighting against thieves bent on committing a robbery. Both are fighting for their lives and hoping to make it to Christmas day and to spend it with their families.
@@jackwilkinson4911 A man flying in from NYC to see his wife and his kids in LA for the holidays isn't a Christmas theme that plays a part in the film's plot? From Spaceballs to Die Hard. Great reaction again, Alyska. Hard to believe that this was Alan Rickman's first ever movie role. He had done theatre for many years, but in his first movie, he becomes, IMHO, the greatest action movie villain of all time. Bruce Willis is wonderful as an everyman turned action movie hero as well. Yes, it's a Christmas movie.
As far as how far sound would travel in those cases for the most part the answer is "not very far", given that the buildings are reinforced concrete and that guns fired are mostly pistols and pistol caliber submachineguns shots fired inside would likely not be perceptible from other floors, particularly when you consider the music playing and all the other noises going on. Shots fired from the roof would likely not be perceptible from the ground in a busy urban environment. The three exceptions would be the Steyr AUG rifle used by one of the bad guys (the guy who gets shot in the end), the M60 machinegun the bad used to shoot at the cop car would basically be about as loud as popcorn from that distance, and of course the anti tank missiles used to destroy the cop armored vehicle would be very very loud. Everybody on scene would have gotten hearing damage from that one. Willis himself apparently did suffer permanent hearing damage from the scene where he shoots a bad guy thru the table as the blank pistol he was using was sitting basically right in front of his face and camera angles were such that he couldn't wear ear protection.
Whether this is a Christmas movie or not should not be a controversy. It has Christmas music, it takes place on Christmas eve, during a Christmas party. It even has a Santa Claus. @@ozchris1 I just wanted to know if his role in Die Hard had a significant impact on his career or if he was already successful before, that's why I asked.
The term “Yippy Ki Yah” isn’t actually from this. He tells the cop to call him Roy. There was another channel old western TV show where a cowboy named Roy Rogers would exclaim it. I think it was on in the 50s, which would put it in John’s childhood. But Roy Rogers actually stole it from an even older Bing Crosby song.
When they were looking who to cast, they want ed to avoid a muscle man like Arnie or Stallone because if the audience sees a goodie with a massive build, they already know who's going to win. @@user-Chris.Alger11 They didn't change their mind. Die Hard was based on the sequel to a novel that Sinatra had already been in a movie adaptation of. The first novel/movie was called "The Detective" and the novel that Die Hard was (in the end loosely) based on was "Nothing Lasts Forever". They offered the sequel to Sinatra, but he declined. That did, however, free them up to make some changes to the original novel. John McClane (originally Joe Leland) was originally a *retired* cop visiting his *daughter's* place of work where she is celebrating Christmas with his *grandchildren*. So, clearly when they cast Bruce Willis they had to age him down and that led to changes in his relationship with who is at the party. Ironically, I think Officer Powell is actually significantly aged *up* for the movie. Also, the twist that the criminals were really just trying to rob the place and "pretending" at being terrorists was created for the movie and the daughter(who would become the wife) fell with Gruber.
If there wasn't xmas tape lying around near the end, John would not have had any way of taping a gun to his back, so there.... Die Hard IS an Xmas movie!!!
I'm so happy you enjoyed the film and Hell Yeah it's a Classic Christmas movie just like Miracle on 34th street and The Gremlins movie :) Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. GG!!!.
The ongoing debate of whether or not die hard as a Christmas movie or not well I'm going to say that I stand on the side that die hard is a Christmas movie because you hear the Christmas music being played throughout the movie every now and then the events take place as you saw during a Christmas party on Christmas Eve and as you heard even the end credits is a Christmas song so yes Die Hard is absolutely a Christmas movie
The candy-stealing henchman is played by Al Leong, legendary stuntman and the henchiest henchman of all the henchmen! He neched in anything and everything, though he had very few lines. Most notable is his death by ice cream waffle cone in John McTiernan's "Last Action Hero" (same director as this here).
John McClane trying to get to his family for christmas, Hans Gruber's plan needs to take place at the Christmas party, Christmas songs and decorations happen throughout the movie, Ellis brings the "snow", Alan Rickman says "HO-HO-HO", friendships are made, self reflection and personal growth occur. How is this not a Christmas movie?😀
Really one of the greatest action movies ever made. It set the standard for every action movie after it and very few of them lived up to that level. I rewatched it recently and was struck by how sophisticated John's story arc is with respect to his wife - him coming to terms with her success and admitting that his ego couldn't handle it... That's some pretty nuanced development for any character, let alone an action hero from the 80s. Also the music is fantastic. The songs are so unusual but they work perfectly in the film. It's kind of a secret weapon, you don't really notice how great the score is until you stop and think about it.
There's been a Christmas concert by a classical orchestra here in Germany done this year. They played a piece of Michael Kamen's score. As a Christmas song. That should clear up any doubt if this is a Christmas movie or not. It most definitely is.
He knew Hans was one of the terrorists before he gave him the gun ---- The way he held his cigarette was a European way (They made sure to show that after he got the light for it)
You are totally right about everything that makes it a Christmas movie, but there are sooo many more reasons why as well. First off, it is about family coming together, (John, his wife and children,) along with the friendships we make along the way. It is also about miracles...showing how they can be good and bad. Hans wished for the money, and by a miracle he got the money, but that led to his downfall. McClane, on the other hand, wished to help those in need, when he really didn't have to, and by a miracle he was able to survive everything that was thrown at him and save the ones that 'deserved' saving. (Ellis was Judas. Mr. Takagi...well...we don't know much about him really, but he did allow drugs to be used openly and freely, as well as having expensive suits, so considering everything, we can assume that he was probably someone who overall cared more about money than anything else...but regardless, it was necessary to show that McClane is unable to save everyone.) It also relates how commercial Christmas has become, where greed has sadly overtaken everything...pretty much a look into the future our world has become. Then there are TONS of little hidden details scattered all over the place, the most obvious being his wife's name...Holly...a direct reference to the holiday. Personally, I consider this possibly the most 'true' Christmas movie ever made and can't understand how anyone could argue it isn't one, but each person does have their own definition of what something qualifies as to them...
@DieHard0, I'm not at all sure there's much reason to paint Takagi as a bad actor. While he probably wasn't taken by surprise in witnessing Ellis doing cocaine, he strikes me as a responsible corporate higher-up who cared about his employees (if you can accept such a person existing that is). I don't think he was stonewalling Hans about the code though he probably didn't believe his life would be forfeit when he didn't provide the information.
9:00 That was a subtle story about Takagi as a boss...even in a violent action like this, his workers didn't expose him immediately. A nice touch for a short-lived character.
Hi Alyska, I loved your reaction to this action classic, it's awesome and absolutelyis a Christmas film!
Absolutely a Christmas Movie !!! One of the Greatest !
Great reaction. Merry Christmas 🎄
@MartinBeerbom, Also, showed up as the guy from the drug importing crew who tortures Riggs in Lethal Weapon. Riggs didn't appreciate the treatment.
How is this not a Christmas movie?😀
...if you consider the scenery, the dialogue and the sound track, there is a Christmas reference about every 4 minutes throughout the movie 😁
Merry Christmas 🎁🎄 to everyone here! Great choice Alyska
It is a Christmas Movie. Hope you enjoyed
He knew Hans was one of the terrorists before he gave him the gun ---- The way he held his cigarette was a European way (They made sure to show that after he got the light for it)
Smokin' blouse to react in. And you called so many things in the movie. Smart!
When they shot the scene when Hans fell, Rickman wasn't expecting them to let him go. His surprised face is very real.
Absolutely a Christmas movie! I love it!
Top tier Christmas movie!
Of course Die Hard is a Christmas movie. So is Lethal Weapon.
This is your first Bruce Willis movie?? You gotta see The Sixth Sense then.
Tis the season.
Ur FIRST Bruce Willis film?! OMG. Well now u have a lot to react to. 5th Element is next for sure!
A truly great and iconic film! RIP Alan Rickman.
Armageddon really cool movie with Bruce Willis
Yes it's a Christmas movie
Argyle has always been my favorite character in this movie. Or Special Agent Johnson.
@cardiac19, Which one?
...no, the other one 😂
@ The other one. 😹
@cardiac19 , I'm guessing you mean the one who was in junior high at the end of the Vietnam War. OK.
@ hahahaha.
We all know good and well that Die Hard is actually not a Christmas movie, it's a Harry Potter movie.
He sneaks around a tower avoiding Alan Rickman.
Hi Alyska, I loved your reaction to this action classic, it's awesome and absolutelyis a Christmas film! As good as Bruce Willis is in it, the great Alan Rickman steals the show as a deliciously witty bad guy! :) just as he does in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991) as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Please react to that next. Merry Christmas, lovely beautiful lady :) have a fab one x
Welcome to the "Die Hard is a Christmas Movie" club!
Definitely a Christmas movie
You’ve watched pulp fiction and the sixth sense, both with Bruce Willis.
Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best in the series
Imho Die Hard is 100% a Christmas movie. It takes place on Christmas Eve, John is trying to get back to his family on Christmas, There are Christmas songs throughout, there is a Christmas tree and presents on the 30th floor, There are references to Christmas throughout the movie, etc.
Obviously it´s a christmas film!
christmas classic you might say
Christmas Movie! and Thanks!
