merchant ships that operates non stop for 365 days are required by maritime regulations to undergo routine maintanence at dry dock every 5 years.
It is only during the dry dock that the under water part of the ships can be inspected and maintenance carried out.
There are many surveys carried out to check the seaworthiness of the ships during dry dock.
