    Great Video! In case you don't know, lithium Ion batteries are best stored with betwen 40 and 70% of its charge, that way the battery won't get damage if stored for to long. And since new batteries could be stored in store shelves for months they package them with low charge.

    I own this plunge saw I also own a festool 240v plunge saw. with this dewalt plunge saw I find it has the equivalent power of the festool and the plunge motion has grown on me, on that note the plunge motion on this saw actually reduces the risk of kickback rather than the traditional pivot motion like on the festool. The blade is always moving forward during the plunge rather than swinging back in on itself and sometimes causing the saw to bite. I agree the dust extraction isn't the best and its lacking a splinter guard that would help with that problem.

    Any cordless tool will be supplied with about a 60% charge on the batteries. This is because the Li-Ion battery will deteriorate if stored fully charged as well as a 'flat' battery will. If you don't intend to use your cordless tool for a few weeks always charge the battery to around 60%. They will live much longer if you do.

    Nice review. One comment on fires with batteries.
    If lithium ion or lithium ion polymer (li-po) batteries fail and catch fire it’s a chemical reaction that does not require oxygen initially.
    The only safe way to store these types of battery is in a flame proof container.
    Suitable bags can be bought specifically for battery storage or a metal container like an old ammo box is suitable.

      @@jamesbailand4311 If they use the same technology then yes and it's not just large batteries all Lithium or LiPo batteries have the same problem. The world has not really grasped the danger with LiPo batteries. I'm just waiting for reports of bin lorries catching fire because some idiot has thrown their old drill battery in the bin and the bin lorry has crushed it. The fire the batteries generate is very intense and there is a very good chance that one battery igniting will cause the rest of the stack to ignite and this will burn until all of the battery is consumed.

    Batteries are like Pringles once they pop they can't stop being exothermic, so sealing them in an air tight seal won't help they contain the full fire triangle theyll go off in a vacuum so just have to try and manage the heat being released keep them separate enough so can't set off eachother like dynamite, but get decent equipment follow manufacturer recommendations and your golden.

    Hey folks, I'm an amateur home woodworker but have accumulated some solid skills and achieved some decent projects over the years with lower grade tools (floor to ceiling book shelves, decks, stairs etc.). Now I want to progress to an accurate track saw and MFT (more versatile than a saw table), decent router etc. to try build higher finish AV cabinet, couple of coffee tables,couple dining tables etc. I actually already have two 54V batteries for a DeWalt chainsaw I use for camping and firewood, so thought I could leverage them on this track saw. In your opinions, is this saw good enough, accurate enough for my intended purposes? Even not needing batteries it's still pretty expensive, the kit with two tracks and two clamps is the go, but we're talking AU$1,100. Are there any other suggested options, including 240V? Thanks, Mike

      Interesting was if DEWALT can say something about the rip guide for the DCS520 because they put the slot for that, like the Mafell one, or Festool.
      Probably I have to make 1 like I did with rafter hook I put on circular saw and on the reciprocating saw.

I called Dewalt and they said it was out of warranty even though I just bought it the day before and had the receipt. They told me to return the entire table saw to Home Depot even though I would have to wait weeks for a replacement (no other stores had that saw in stock). They finally helped me but only after I made a real fuss and showed them in my Dewalt.com account that I had tons of their tools. Not right to have the warranty based on date code instead of date you buy. Some dealers have this stuff on their shelves for years. Especially the more expensive and less popular tools.

    I think you were a bit.. ignorant about the track being two sided. Ambidextrous? Why would that be a thing when you can just flip the track around if you need to go the other direction. And the cut line does not change when doing bevel cut, so there is no advantage there either. In my mind (I have the corded version that has the same tracks) the advantage is either that if the rubber rip guard gets too worn you still have the other side to use fresh, or, if you use two blades with a different kerf (thickness) you can have one side for each to still have perfect rip protection.

    In the USA by law they can say the Dewalt stuff is the starting voltage even though the products don't run at that voltage.In other places in the world the above is illegal marketing wise and thus has the real running voltage.

      You are right but don't shout about it to the americans as they get really annoyed and they can't work the maths on 18 but 20 is easy for them. That is why its called 20v Max in the states. I have plenty of tools from the states that I use the 18v batteries in because they are all identical the world over. If you actually look at the 18650 cells in the batteries, their nominal voltage is around 3.6v but they can peak at 4v when they come off the charger. So the normal world uses the nominal voltage as that is the correct value for the cell but the americans use the peak voltage cos they are obviously bigger and better than the rest :)

      It's required for transportation, due to regulations concerning movement of lithium batteries, weather buy road, rail or air within the EU. Probably in USA and Canada as well but don't know the laws there. 3 18v batteries are fine but 1 54v one would be too high, so the transport cap acts like a 18v tool turning the battery pack in to 3 18v batteries. In reality you still have the same amount of lithium, and your not adding any additional physical space so I would not bother with the transport cap unless you're transporting it. I'm not sure if it would apply to carrying your own in the back of a van, but definitely applies to sending it via courier as I had to do paperwork with TNT in the past, when sending out field kit to area offices.

    When you go to cut the strip with a new blade etc, you can’t cut from the very end otherwise the saw wobbles off the track and ruins the cut. The blade moves forward as you plunge which misses the start of the strip

    Oh dear, real let down on this video as Roger knows nothing about the battery technology. Good review of the saw but mis information on the batteries is a bad thing. There are no different pins for 18v versus 54v. The pin out is the same on all batteries and the technology to deliver the right voltage is in the battery.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Jason
      Sorry, you feel let down. I am the first to admit that I am not an electronic engineer and my head sometimes has to work hard to understand this stuff. A year ago I asked the people at DeWalt how it was achieved and, as far as I can recall, the man told me.the pins in the 54-volt machine tell the battery to run in one series circuit. rather than three parallel circuits.
      I think you are suggesting that a chip in the tool tells a chip in the battery to switch to a series configuration by some internal switch. If that is so I stand corrected but from the user's point of view, they get either an 18-volt battery with 6 Ahr or a 54 volt with 2Ahr but more power.
      The tradeoff is runtime for grunt.
      As a general point,
      I talk to a lot of sales people and a good many technical people and it is surprising how often a question such as
      How is this done? or what is this made from? leaves them totally stumped. I would love to hear your explanation beause we still have the Showdown to come and I can dazzle Robin with my explanation.

    • @JasonShowell
      @JasonShowell 5 лет назад

      Hi Roger, Firstly, please don't take my comment too negatively. I don't expect many people to fully understand how the battery works and the rest of your review was spot on. My main worry is mis information or bad information. For the batteries to explode or catch fire, they don't need oxygen and they don't care about what box they are in. People cannot truly rely on a plastic box to keep them safe. Metal is better but still not perfect if these batteries decide to explode. Its a chemical reaction that happens and that is the dangerous part. I am not going to pretend to know all the answers on this but there are certainly smarter people than me that know what is going on here.
      With regards to the voltage. The battery only uses 2 pins between battery and tool. All the tools are 'dumb' and just expect power when the battery is connected. The flexvolt batteries have a lot of electronics in them which is a blessing and a curse. It means there is more to go wrong and I have had a flexvolt battery fail but it is also what determines the voltage that is put out. You can see a really good break down of one of the batteries in this video and you can see that there are only 2 pins used to get the power out. Most people expected different pins but that would make battery compatibility harder in the future. The way dewalt has done it is clever as all their tools are wired the same and the battery takes care of the rest.
      ruclips.net/video/bB6CuCzbWl8/видео.html
      Keep up the good work on the channel as I have been a fan for a long time. All I ask is that you be honest if you don't know / understand something or you go find out rather than give people the wrong information. I am the first to admit I get plenty wrong :)

      I met the guys at DeWalt today and spoke to the person who specialises in Flexvolt and he showed me the pin arrangement on the 54volt and how it differs to the 18 volt. I was right in my initial statement. The extra tags on the 54 volt battery will operate on 54 volts machines to redirect the current back along the cells so all three 18 vollt groups are running in series. There are no switches and no micro processors involved in this.

    • @JasonShowell
      @JasonShowell 5 лет назад

      @@SkillBuilder I love that you managed to talk to DeWalt about this. My only issue is that you talked theory of how it's done but if you actually open the battery you will see how it works. Look at the video I linked to. The wires coming from the battery pack are only on 2 pins. Literally no other pins are used. This makes it impossible for it to use different pins to change the voltage. I have opened 2 flexvolt batteries so far and they are both just using 2 pins to supply the tools. Physical beats theoretical in this instance.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  5 лет назад

      Jason
      I hadn't watched that video. It is interesting but it seems to me that those two heavy duty wires go into the back of a distribution plate. On that basis I am guessing that it comes out in 54 volt from the cells regardless of the machine and then goes into a sealed distribution board at the back of those terminals.
      The centre ones are all that is needed for the 54 volt but if it is drawing 18 volts it must connect to the other terminals. In the video they don't seem to be connected but they must be under all that silicone. They must have a purpose. I am still not sure what is happening but, just for fun, I will ask somebody else at DeWalt. There is a chance they might not want to tell me, in which case, I will have to wait for their competitors to take it apart.
