  • Album: Hymns For The Hopeless
    Label: Southern Records
    Lyrics:
In a box made of pine lays the sweet love of mine
she's been gone for nearly a year
    The river would overflow
if only I could trade a raindrop for every tear
It was the year of ought one and our life had begun
no perils could make us distraught
Together we stood through bad and through good
no hardships that couldn't be fought
She fell ill one dark winter's night
and before too long the passed
It would prove to be true my whole life through
    that nothing good would last
It all ended that day when I saw her ride away
in the back of that long black hearse
I remember so well my personal hell
    began on this here Earth
I've half the heart I used to have and half the will to go on
I've got half a mind to drink myself blind
now that my darlin' is gone
Now the winter's teeth are biting down
and it chills me to the bone
To think about that cold mattress
    and sleeping all alone
So now I know what I must do
the path ahead of me is clear
I must join her now wherever she's at
'cause I ain't doin' no good here

Rips my heart out with every song, and I will NOT stop listening. Sickens me that he isn't world famous with a gazillion views. This man's talent astounds me, daily.... Because I listen to him daily. Absolutely my favorite artist, EVER. Thank you for sharing, and please keep sharing. William Elliot Whitmore has more talent in his little finger than any other artist I have heard in 20 years, he's made me a listener in music that was never my genre at all. LOVE LOVE LOVE

If you get the chance, see him live. I first saw him opening for The Pogues many years ago, and not only does he sound incredible and come across as super friendly, but he could've easily done that show in front of 1,500 people with no mic. I don't know where the power in his voice comes from, but it's genuinely stunning live.
And he somehow even sighs at just the right moment in his darker songs, almost to let you know that he might still be touching the wounds that made him write some of them.

This needs 1 million more likes... One of the most heart wrenching songs ever recorded. 20 years on and Will never gets the recognition he so very much deserves. This is just...sigh...so glad he played it tonight. Never has the impact that this earliest recording does, though, but still good to hear it again.
Thanks so much for uploading it. 💜

The reason I'm awake thru the night is the death of my son. On March 23, 2011 he was murdered; he was 35 yrs old. Life is only clouds of darkness for me, also.

Because the music industry is not interested in true art - they are interested in what will make them money

If music like this was popular within youth today, I believe we would have a better society...

Bass Trammel That's very true... I am part of this youth btw, when I wrote this comment I was really just losing hope in my generation, but only time will tell.

Every generation of all time has felt this, so don't worry. humankind has survived for quite a while.

+Bobo Ayame I don't think I'm born in the 'wrong' generation necessarily, and I don't think being young and liking a song gives you superiority or proves you're a high IQ rick and morty viewer or some shit. Listen and do whatever you want- that shouldn't be what defines you.
But I do believe most of my generation is disgusting in a different way than other generations (even though maybe not worse) and I do agree that if they were more peaceful, and more sad (not blindly depressed) people- they'd be better off and so would the whole world.

what sucks is that it'll take me 260 bucks to see him. I'll keep watching but I guarran-godam-tee you I will not pay that much to see someone that makes me think about hauling hay, brother. Watch yourself. I won't support you doing the things you sing about countering. That's not alot of money, typically. But in todays' terms, it's either all or nothing, man. Goddam, I hate that. I hate myself for typing this. But it is what it is. Ozark, Ark, 130 bucks a pass? come on man.
