Lyrics:
In a box made of pine lays the sweet love of mine
she's been gone for nearly a year
The river would overflow
if only I could trade a raindrop for every tear
It was the year of ought one and our life had begun
no perils could make us distraught
Together we stood through bad and through good
no hardships that couldn't be fought
She fell ill one dark winter's night
and before too long the passed
It would prove to be true my whole life through
that nothing good would last
It all ended that day when I saw her ride away
in the back of that long black hearse
I remember so well my personal hell
began on this here Earth
I've half the heart I used to have and half the will to go on
I've got half a mind to drink myself blind
now that my darlin' is gone
Now the winter's teeth are biting down
and it chills me to the bone
To think about that cold mattress
and sleeping all alone
So now I know what I must do
the path ahead of me is clear
I must join her now wherever she's at
'cause I ain't doin' no good here
Rips my heart out with every song, and I will NOT stop listening. Sickens me that he isn't world famous with a gazillion views. This man's talent astounds me, daily.... Because I listen to him daily. Absolutely my favorite artist, EVER. Thank you for sharing, and please keep sharing. William Elliot Whitmore has more talent in his little finger than any other artist I have heard in 20 years, he's made me a listener in music that was never my genre at all. LOVE LOVE LOVE
If you get the chance, see him live. I first saw him opening for The Pogues many years ago, and not only does he sound incredible and come across as super friendly, but he could've easily done that show in front of 1,500 people with no mic. I don't know where the power in his voice comes from, but it's genuinely stunning live.
And he somehow even sighs at just the right moment in his darker songs, almost to let you know that he might still be touching the wounds that made him write some of them.
Saw him open for clutch in 04 or 05 and have listened to him ever since
Love WEW, so many great shows from Roxy to the Ace of Spades. Always looking for him to show up in a city im in.
This needs 1 million more likes... One of the most heart wrenching songs ever recorded. 20 years on and Will never gets the recognition he so very much deserves. This is just...sigh...so glad he played it tonight. Never has the impact that this earliest recording does, though, but still good to hear it again.
Thanks so much for uploading it. 💜
Every time I listen to this song I get something in my eye.
Well written tune. Very well written.
The reason I'm awake thru the night is the death of my son. On March 23, 2011 he was murdered; he was 35 yrs old. Life is only clouds of darkness for me, also.
Hi, I clicked like on your post a few years ago. I hope the clouds have lifted a bit for you. X
Same as Dave Horn, I hope your clouds has clearde in some way.
fucking shit man, im crying for you some
Hope you’re still weathering the storm
Hurts me every time
how can someone with such strong lyrics and message still be singing in bars? ...love this!
Because he actually has talent that is why and not to everyone's liking
HE plays reasonable sized theatres here, I'd love to see him in a bar
Because the music industry is not interested in true art - they are interested in what will make them money
Because not everyone wants to hear something depressing and feel like hanging themselves.
If music like this was popular within youth today, I believe we would have a better society...
Never underestimate youth, they'll change the world without you seeing it.
Bass Trammel That's very true... I am part of this youth btw, when I wrote this comment I was really just losing hope in my generation, but only time will tell.
Every generation of all time has felt this, so don't worry. humankind has survived for quite a while.
I'm doing my best, man
+Bobo Ayame I don't think I'm born in the 'wrong' generation necessarily, and I don't think being young and liking a song gives you superiority or proves you're a high IQ rick and morty viewer or some shit. Listen and do whatever you want- that shouldn't be what defines you.
But I do believe most of my generation is disgusting in a different way than other generations (even though maybe not worse) and I do agree that if they were more peaceful, and more sad (not blindly depressed) people- they'd be better off and so would the whole world.
Wow man the horrible pain you must be in. Just stay focused on the here and now and don't get caught up in what is gone. If you listen to amazing music like this we need ya here man.
Wow..this man is so inspring and refreshing to hear..makes me wonder where my life is going..all of his songs give ya something to think about
recent "artists" just do not have this calibre of talent
I Love this wonderful Song and Voice 🤗
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for all of your music, seriously.
Just found this guy...holy shit
I'm sorry for your losses, but there is beauty yet in this world. I hope that you find some happiness.
Possibly his best work.
He is a pure genius. I can't pick a favorite. He is the Dylan or Twain of today. Thank you.
Digging my grave 👌🏻
Absolutely. Literally, the most underrated artist today. He is my all-time favorite singer-songwriter, point blank. No one is better at ripping the heart out then Will is.
Everyday brother. God bless.
godamn fantastic.
I love it
I can relate to this comment. XD
hmmm...going to see him tomorrow for 12 bucks...
Man go to a local bar and see him for 15 bucks 1000x better.
Lmarie
i;m sorry but i've listened to tom waits and bob dylan a lot but W.E.W is better
what sucks is that it'll take me 260 bucks to see him. I'll keep watching but I guarran-godam-tee you I will not pay that much to see someone that makes me think about hauling hay, brother. Watch yourself. I won't support you doing the things you sing about countering. That's not alot of money, typically. But in todays' terms, it's either all or nothing, man. Goddam, I hate that. I hate myself for typing this. But it is what it is. Ozark, Ark, 130 bucks a pass? come on man.
