I think lately there a lot of directors exposing their influence from directors like Terrence Malick, like The outwaters, robin, the director, said that Terrence was inspiration for his movie. A few days ago I watched The Giant, kind of a thriller and it shows a big influence from Malick’s style. I think there is some interesting mixing in styles in horror movies lately.

@@citizenvulpes4562 eh, it was boring for some horror fans not all. It's split as a lot of horror fans liked it. None of us speak for all horror fans and the idea that some of you are "true" horror fans and others aren't is ridiculous. Takes a special kind of arrogance to think here is some people who are "true" horror fans and others who aren't true. True is just a subjective term people make up when they want to discount people who disagree with them, nothing more than that.

I don’t often get scared by horror (i suspect because of some combination of horror is my escapism and my own autism) but I found the end of this movie to be extremely tense. Knowing what the killer was capable of and just watching backgrounds and waiting for him to burst out to continue his spree really worked for me; it’s disappointing that even people who otherwise like the movie hate the ending.

Completely agree! SPOILERS AHEAD. Loved the ending. As the killer is the protagonist, we lose our “villain” and most of the movie isn’t scary for that reason. But the last 15 minutes were harrowing to me: Kris running in a “loop” cued by the repetitive bird sounds and “thwacking” noises was super eerie, and waiting for something terrible to happen during the car ride was very tense. I love the very end, as the “final girl” will never feel safe again. No final jump scare needed.

I loved the ending. I liked that they realistically showed how a person gains a permanent fear. That girl staring at the wood, turns something (nature) forever violent for her. The story about the animal? Just cemented the fact that nature can be irrationally violent in that girls mind and it wasn't a nature documentary. She now understood it because she'd lived it, and had taken part in it of being hunted, and it was her reality at that point, not just a "commonly held knowledge we live with but have no real clue about." that''s why the film and the ending worked on me

My take on the true intention of the "unsatisfying" ending is that not only will the traumatized Final Girl live in fear of Johnny's return for the rest of her life, but we should all know that there could be a million Johnnys out there, in every forest, that could be reawakened by the simplest offense or oblivious mistake. That's what makes the documentation terrifying 😎

I thought it was a bit of a meta homage to horror tropes of the bad guy jumping out. After all his slow walking I was genuinely on the edge of my seat thinking, "If he can suddenly outrun a car..."
The tension was meta and not for the character, but it was tension nonetheless. Any tension is better than a cheap jump scare.

I actually went to see this movie twice in theatres opening weekend. Not because I loved it that much, but because I drank a bit too much the first time and didn't really remember much about it, lol. That said, I did really like this movie, despite its flaws.
I thought it did a great job of bringing the boogeyman back to the slasher. It does undermine that a bit with at least one kill being a bit comedic (despite being brutal) and maybe lingering on one kill a little too long. The ending also falls flat for me - far too dragged out for too little pay-off. But even with those flaws, I did really enjoy it.
I really like what you said about it being from the land's perspective (the Canadian folk song that plays during the end credits, The Blackfly Song, I think really backs that idea up). And I totally agree with you that taking this perspective allows for some meta-appreciation of the genre, a la Behind the Mask.
Anyway, big fan of your channel. I'm gonna actually finish watching your video now.

I would have actually preferred it if they commited more to the POV and only ever tangentially showed the victims until the end. I liked moments like when the killer is coming for them and you can hear them having a horror movie conversation("there's something strange going on here!") but you don't see them. I thought that was great.

I love the premise of little dialogue and no music to take away from the most important aspect of movie making, the visuals. Especially in a horror film, where the kills and fx are the main payoff. I liked it. I think the slow pace following him from behind was good, but it seemed weird. I guess him waling through the woods, it wasn't as scary because he was following the path, so him meandering on the trail where it was easiest to walk seemed to lessen his scariness. It wasn't as menacing like Jason who is walking in a straight line to his victim. It's like, "I'm a relentless killer, but I don't want to walk through that poison ivy either."

I loved this one. 8/10. The direct, realistic, stripped down nature of it was the spooky/unsettling aspect to me. Yeah, you gotta walk in the woods for 5 minutes to find your prey. We hear headlines like 'stabbed 29 times' well, this is what it's like 😂 takes a while. I think we are overly critical of bad writing and trope-y characters sometimes. We are all trope-y characters with bad dialogue in real life.
Our theater in Albany, NY was like 70% full. Quite unheard of these days, esp for spooky movies. Quite a few of us had a good laugh too. I felt like I was among 'my people'.

“The gore? Beautiful.” You’re a sick person Emma 😂. Great non-spoilery review though. Always love to hear your impressions about films.
As for this one I’ll pass…I’m not really one for realistic horror but I can appreciate that there are many people who are. I personally like the horror tropes (the rules, as you put it) that allow me to escape my anxiety/depression, so something about vampires or a campy Freddy movie is more my thing. Or supernatural shenanigans.
Can’t wait for your next review. Hooroo ✌🏼

I just got to see this movie in the cinema today. I loved it. I didn’t find it boring, the slow pace was very relaxing to me. The best scenes were when we are just following the killer slowly walking through the beautiful scenery. The weakest stuff was all of the lame characters/dialogue. I would have been happy if the whole movie was just following the killer with the occasional gory kill.

I dont know if this is a spoiler so beware... but I guess I had a problem with what the perspective or motivation of the slasher was. The movie hints as if he was an allegory for nature itself, no feeling, just kill. I thought though he was very creative in his killing, like Daddy didnt think I was a talented artist so Ill show him. I wish i got a better sense of what the core theme was for this movie was. I thought it was great other than that though. It was a fun movie watching experience altogether.

I was anxiously awaiting your review but didn't want to bug, I knew you would get to it! I haven't seen it yet but I am definitely going to! People are really divided on this movie, the biggest complaints I hear are that it's painfully slow, cheesy acting and unrealistic decision making by the victims, but isn't that what a slasher is? Everyone is in agreement that it is brutal in the violence department! So I'm going to kick back and enjoy myself a nice slow brutally gory slasher!😁...pssst I really enjoy all your review's, awesome content!😊👍

I like slow burn movies when there's a good reason for it but almost every modern burner is just wasting time due to lack of budget and they try to play it off as artistic. Either make the burn worthwhile or tighten things up and make it a short. I find most indie films to be largely style with the illusion of substance and this sounds like more of the same.

I love the idea of this. I've waited too long to watch this, I usually try to avoid even trailers. I guess I'm gonna watch it anyway but my impatience may have ruined a lot of it for me cos I watched all these reviews. I think that's great Damien Leone has some competition now. Let's keep horror gory! PS. Love your videos as always, Emma.

I actually liked the cheesy dialogue, despite the arthouse, quiet atmosphere.
It was as if we were watching a typical, cheesy slasher but from a completely new perspective. It's the same story, with the same dialogue and setup, cheesy as all get out, but with a fresh, artsy perspective.

So I saw it and I see both sides to what people live and what people hate. Literally hated what everyone else did and literally loved what everyone else loved. The kills, OMG some of the most creative and brutal I’ve ever seen!! YOGA!!! Enough said! In saying all that…I don’t know what you would even call this movie…there wasn’t a second of this movie where I was scared or terrified, like at all. Probably the most un scary/horror I’ve ever seen. It gives me a good idea of what A24 could do with a Friday The 13th property should that ever happen. Just scarier I’m sure.
All in all it’s the first movie that I can genuinely say that I didn’t love or even like…but didn’t hate. If that even makes sense?? lol

Interesting. I feel that I'm a bit in the minority of horror fans in that I don't actually like slasher films, for whatever reason. However, I think I will have to watch this one, because I do love a good slow burn horror, I love that it's doing the slasher thing differently, and I'm for sure interested in the idea that it has that experimental nature.
