  • This is my honest, no holds-barred assessment of my Praktica MTL 5, a mechanical 35mm SLR from the old East German Democratic Republic and the first camera I ever owned and used.

    Hello from Germany,
first, please excuse my bad english.... 😞
The flash sync speed is not 1/30 sec, it's 1/125 sec. The 1/30 sync speed is for old flash bulbs that are not available anymore. The 1/125 sec is for the usual electronic flash. You can also set the shutter speed dial to the small flash sign near the B setting.....the shutter speed will be 1/125 of a second. Or even set the shutter speed dail to the 1/125 sec.
    Greetings from Berlin,
    Denis

    I had a Praktica LTL3 that I owned/used in about 1977 through to about 1988, a great camera.

I collect and use a lot of old Praktica camera's. All working fine. No problems at all. None of them. I like those machines.

Likewise, I have 26 of these cameras and they are all working well. I also have a few Zenits which are also in good nick. The only problem I ever have is the weight, they're all solid reliable and tank like.

@@johngoodfellow168 yes, they are. A lot of metal constructing.

I have an MTL5. However the glue on the covering on the back has come away from the body on the door. Any ideas?

Could you make video about your prakticas?

Interesting presentation. In context I am getting back into film photography and in my bag is a Practica TL1000 and a Pentax Spotmatic. Will be interesting to see how they compare back to back. I only retired my MTL5 because the film counter stopped working after I dropped it off a cliff in the Peak District. Only damage a dent near the winder- Shot the rest of the film without any problems.

I have a LTL 3. It works fine, it is reliable, it is very easy to use. I even think it is a good looking camera. The only drag is that it is a bit loud. And that «easy loading» - which turn out to be not that easy all the time. But it is a keeper. 👍🏻

eBay is full of broken nikons, leicas and canons. Of course, a praktica can break too, like ALL mechanical cameras.

I have a Praktica MTL5B (that you mentioned ) and an almost identical Revue ML and both are incredibly reliable ! I don‘t want to assume that you maybe mistreat your Cameras. But if so many people obviously have no issues at all ….😅

I have just one Jena lens, and I love that it says DDR on the front.

I have Praktica MTL50 and it’s great. I would try SP, but Praktica affordable as Zenit, but far more reliable

I have the updated model of this camera - the Praktica MTL 5B with a Pentacon f 1.8/50 mm lens. I'm going to give a spin with Kentmere Pan 100 black and white film.

I've never had any problems with my (4) Praktica cameras. The results are almost identical to those from my Spotmatics!

@@mueslimuncher1950 Honestly I've tried many SLRs , the praktica I had a very accurate meter. With the same lens I couldn't see any difference In the pictures between east block and Japanese cameras.

Very interesting. I have 3 Prakticas and they are awesome. The LTL 3 is the favourite SLR in my collection

Maybe you had bad luck with the prakticas. I had one, got it dirt cheap ,broke after 2 rolls, fixed it and broke and the 3rd one. I had plenty of Soviet cameras- zenit, fed, Kiev, smena . They all worked lovely with no problems. Most Soviet cameras get a bad reputation from their random build quality, guess I lucked out. But still- I'm not paying north side of £100 for a camera, I don't care how good they are.

The MTL 5 is a bit of a problem child in the range, but not at all typical of the entire range.

Does it have a lightmeter? These long video's need chapters!
