From Freezing Cold to Housing Insecurity, Migrants Face Crisis in NYC, Chicago & Beyond

As nine Democratic governors join together to call on President Biden and Congress to address the humanitarian crisis faced by migrants, we look at conditions faced by tens of thousands of asylum seekers in New York City and Chicago. Many arrived over the last year on buses from Texas as part of Republican Governor Greg Abbott's anti-immigrant efforts. We hear from a migrant staying in a tent shelter at a former airport site in New York City where they face below-freezing temperatures and a lack of medical services, and we speak with immigration rights activists, including Murad Awawdeh, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, and Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas, who discuss how immigrants have been treated as scapegoats by leaders who have failed to provide services and reform the immigration system. "Migrants are simply making these failures in our society very visible," says Chacón.

American's homeless population needs shelter, resources, food and clothes.
The American Public get the Government they themselves voted for, supported, enabled, facilitated, and deserve...
And who is going to help us? I'm working 2 jobs. I had breast cancer and nobody helped me to pay the expenses. I did it by myself. With 2 jobs we barely making to pay the high taxes.
With all the stuffs that people needs our taxes are going to increase dramatically.

Our country is going to hell in many ways because we keep being the worlds bank book. We are in major debt and the infrastructure, education and many other things are going downhill. Why? because our government keeps using our tax dollars to fix everyone else's problems.. with money.
I an American citizen, was homeless 3 years, i didn't get what these ILLEGAL immigrants get. They feel they're entitled, im just baffled.

you an alchoholic or drug addict? then yeah you would not get the same benefits as others. i was a homeless person for 12 years there was NO difference between my shelter experience and the NYC immigrants. if you are male there are usually not enough services though. Immigrant males also suffer a little more than the families as well. hope their suffering makes you feel better, ugh, you sound inhumane. God loves you too, but I don't.
They really do. I saw a video of a woman ranting because someone wasn’t feeding her child. It’s certainly sad, but the audacity!

This is what our homeless citizens experience EVERY day. Why aren't we, as a society focused on the homelessness issue in our country?
They plan on replacing our military with migrants as our institutions continue to rot and less and less Americans choose to enlist because no one wants to fight for this craphole anymore. That is my prediction.

I am a homeless advocate and I can tell you that our homeless will go out there and not bitch about taking anything that is given to them but all of these illegals will literally turn down something saying it's just not good enough. Also you do not see them on the streets in sleeping bags and stuff because of the fact that they're being housed in buildings in schools and everything but our homeless are dying on the streets. What's even more heartbreaking to me is that Americans will literally sit here and say that these people need our help but then turn around and shun their own neighbor 💔💔💔🙄✌️

Let's hear from the American homeless, let them tell their stories. The American homeless have terrible stories as well but if they show up at one of those migrate shelters they will be turned away to sleep in the cold but we are to feel sorry for the illegals. New York & CA have the highest rent on record but the illegals want the government to pay for apts for them but will our government we pay our taxes to pay rent for their citizens? I need free rent, where do I get in line? I had to get every freaking thing I got out the mud but I'm supposed to give it away to lazy illegals with a sob story, I have my own sob story! This government didn't help me, I had to help myself.
Im homeless and living free in nyc. I feel horrible for these people. At the end of the day, people who risk thier lives to be in this shitty country, and work, they are Americans.

At this point I would like to hear the American homeless speak it seems to me that they have been placed under a rock with no voice and yet we are supposed to be more concerned about the migrants. All of this could have been avoided if these people weren't placed here in the first place here and now, they are forced to be our problem while there are citizens that are struggling just to get a plate of food daily.

Have you seen our TV shows? Those are the promises people in other countries see. They think that the worst housing situation they may have is similar to Full House where everyone is fit into a single house using the basement or attic at times.
If you're living somewhere with no food, no work and plenty of violence, then Full House seems like Utopia.

They arrive hoping for safety and asylum, not entitlements and hatred. The Ecuadorian woman, with two daughters, whose partner died enroute through the Darien Gap is not eligible for asylum. She may be an asylum-seeker but only 15% are successful with their claims. Domestic violence is not one of the criteria for international protection under the 1951 Refugee Convention. She and her children should never been allowed entry to the U.S.
Now that she is here , lets see what happens. I'll predict. Donald Dump will win a landslide election , insurrection and all. Both Donald Dump and Gregoria Abbott & Co. will scam a massive deportation to line their pockets with corruption funds. The reality is that we don't even have an efficiant way to manage or assist our own homeless population
Most places are struggling to secure housing and other resources for homeless and/or poverty stricken Americans. We just don’t seem to have the resources for this because we are busy spending all our money on wars. I’m calling for permanent housing for the 600K homeless American people.
We would have plenty of resources for everyone in need, if we would cut our military budget and tax the wealthy at higher rates.
"We don't seem to have the resources"? That literally made me laugh. Of course we do. It's a policy choice. We just spent 10 trillion during covid. Most of that money went to the rich and drove up asset prices like housing. That means anyone who doesn't own a home has it much harder now to buy one. But nobody even cared. They could build enough housing for a fraction of that money and that increased supply would then drive down housing costs. But that's not what they want. Housing is an investment and those investments are supposed to gain in value.

Hard to to fight for housing and monetary resources we don't have. Can't magically build hundreds of houses daily. This guy is dreaming, if we had all this city housing he's talking about, we wouldn't have so many homeless people in my city. My city, NYC took in over 150,000 migrants, we have no more room. We did our part.

Veterans services can always be improved. many new immigrans will also volunteer for the American military as soon as their papers come through. daddy will sacrifice watching his chidren grow up as soon as they manage to succeed walking to America. i have witnessed it. we are getting people intent on learning and education. don't be fooled by anything maudlin or inaccurate in the media snippet industry. these new immigrants have buying power now, paying back the taxes and the kindness they have received.

@@Applecider-Poetrya couple of weeks ago, I watched an immigrant out right say he didn't come here to work, he came here to get what he was promised, a house, food, money etc... When reporter asked him who promised him all that, he replied the American government. I was shocked at what he said. This interview was done in New York. Don't remember the channel.

The US needs to work with these countries to create support programs for these people. US government policies and sanctions have caused most these problems that cause these people to flee their homes in the global south and the 3rd world.

How sad that those who are really in need are having to struggle so hard to get help. NYC is beyond reasonable for what they charge for a closet to live in, in this town. There is no rent satbiltiy in NYC. You have so many vacant warehouses that could house so many immigrants if they were divided. I lived there all my childhood and on my own life. There is no excuse for what NYC economey does to the rents in this city. I took my son back there for his 20 birthday from California. I paid $300 a night for a closet with two beds . It was the most disappointing experience for my son and myself for my gift to him. NYC is raping everyone. NYC Is a sanctuary city. They are used to this. How long do you think the "wait list" is to get a public housing unit or income based apartment in NYC and other Major inner cities for the low income American Family? Some people have been on wait lists for many months if not years. Other buildings not owned by housing authorities either get condemned or you will have parts of the building end up in the street because it is owned and operated by slumlords before getting it gets condemned and demolished. Then there is another problem called Gentrification, but the thing is not many people can afford the rent for these apartments they are putting in the newer buildings so that is why many of those are sitting more then half empty. The price that is being asked for some of those apartments is more then what many pay for a mortgage for a great house in the suburbs, so most people "who can" afford those choose to buy a house. If you want to be fair you have to look at the many people in America right now who are facing a "Housing Crisis" because it is not just the migrants!
