    As a kid, I was wowed by the brick sized faceted topaz and aquamarines. As an old lady avoiding Covid I toured the collection online recently and was amazed at the beer can sized tourmaline specimens by the entrance, including a reconstructed gem pocket. More on those would be fabulous.

    I’m so glad there are so many specimens for all to see, instead of being in a private collection. As for the Monopoly board, well, it was really quite something. A Gold “Get out of jail free card”, that’s special. Being from the U.K. the Natural History Museum in London has some great specimens as well. If I went to the Smithsonian gemstone exhibition I’d probably take about a week just looking.

    My grandmother found and donated to the Smithsonian a fossilized camel jaw she found in Florida. Supposedly it was the first pregistoric camel jaw to be found in Florida. I cant verify that since it was before i was born. She also found part of a manatee skeleton and the bone she brought home my grandfather turned into a knife handle of a knife he had made. She had it until she died. The bone handle had a kind of greasy feel to it and the bone was very dense. Really cool knife. My great uncle stole it when she died, but i dont talk about him.

    I would love to know the history of the Hope Diamond, even if it’s not housed there anymore? I remember seeing it as a kid many times and it was always the perfect grand finale for the exhibit :)

    the lady who invented monopoly has been perpetually spinning in her grave when that gold set was made 😂 fun fact the game was invented to teach kids about how awful capitalism is. It's still a freaking cool piece and definitely a fun addition to what some people may find as a boring traditional museum. The Smithsonian actually has alot of interesting and fun things.

    Why why why turquoise they destroyed a piece of art

    • @ericaobrien1563
      @ericaobrien1563 2 года назад

      It's a beautiful piece, very intricate. It's not like any other turquoise I've ever seen, very soft pale babyish blue, a lot less green than most pieces I've seen. No veining, or at least not visible through the case. Sad they replaced all the emeralds, it must have been pretty spectacular, but it's still such a finely worked impressive piece.

    the Smithsonian Museums are just amazing and they are tax payer paid so its your money paying for the upkeep. But please stop coming to DC. Just use the Metro and don't drive. No bathrooms, no nice people and too expensive.

    The Smithsonian took the skeleton finds of the past of what they call giant humans and destroyed them and you call them preservers of history after they covered up the existence
