Thanks for this. I hate being asked if it's photoshopped. Makes me want to say, "thanks for stopping by, good day!" Shouldnt matter how an artist creates the art, it either works or it doesn't.
I've done plenty of realism in my aviation art in pencil and the moment an art teacher told me "art is shape without lines" is the moment I realized how much I love line work in ink and also that is the moment I realized art school is the antithesis of art in most situations.
Please do an in depth video on your process of creating your prints and beginner steps on how to start doing them. Thanks Klee and Rafi! Looking forward to your live stream.
I am relatively new to your channel and have been enjoying your perspective immensely. You are kind and funny and your input is salient and accessible. Klee is the perfect foil with her quirky commentary from the blurry corner of your video. Also, your pieces are quite engaging and have a lot of visual umami (to steal a snooty cooking term)...HUZZAH!
RAFI YOU´RE BACK! I was getting withdrawal symptoms :p (If you ever run out of ideas, here's one: let people send in their art and review it! I'd love to hear from you guys what I can do better ;) )
Thank you for the video guys. I feel the true art is freedom and when you have the freedom to create and not be restricted by boundaries that’s when the true art shows thanks again guys you rock!!
I am a ceramicist (and painter, but the painting is not important for this comment), and I do what I call "revisiting old ideas", where I take elements from some of my past works that I really like and try to rework it. I've made various versions of ram, bovine, and deer skulls. Because these animals are so similar on an anatomical level they do come out looking somewhat alike, and are all inspired by one original seed of an idea, but they are each a different take on that basic idea. Another example is that I made a patchwork style cup and like the concept so much that I made a similar one a couple years later. On the second I used a totally different color scheme on and omitted the stitching I put on the first piece. Part of the reason I've done this is that the original pieces are not for sale, so I wanted something similar to showcase my talents that I could sell to potential buyers/collectors. And even if I lined up all these similar pieces, they are obviously not actual reproductions of the same piece. This is how I reuse and revisit old works and ideas, but I get that not everyone works the same way, and this might not be how other artists feel about this. Just my two cents on reproducing my previous works. Thanks for your perspective Rafi and Klee!
I just found your channel today (subscribed) and I'm so glad I did! Within the past months I've been feeling like hey I actually can be an "artist" I've been getting into digital art (which I'd obviously make prints for) but I love the idea of having a series of paintings as well. You're a refreshing person in the art world, which I have very little experience in and I can't wait to see more of your old and new videos.
Wow! I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! I LOVE your messages AND I LOVE the way you do your prints!!! I've been struggling with the print process for years! I don't even know why... So glad I found you! Love your rants and you make me laugh!
I am duplicating a big painting that I painted over in a fit of pique. Fortunately I had photographed it. When I saw the photograph, I realized it was great painting.
I'm going to be 80% digital print on demand. I made this choice because shipping is a nightmare, and I work digitally so it makes a lot of sense till I have enough following and such to get a production up and going. I do want my art to be valued so I will be limited prints and sales on even my clothing items . jewelry will be one of a kind and my paintings will be one of a kind. you're right it depends on you as an artist and what you're comfort levels are and what works for you what stopped me for years was feeling i had to make every item now I have that pressure off my shoulders i can just focus on my art
Somebody once said to me, "just because someone gave an opinion about you, doesn't make it true. No matter who they are." That was the beginning of my journey to rediscover myself artistically. Sadly, I am an artist who is afraid to sell her work, for whatever reason. Actually I am not even sure why. Sad, but true. This is okay & not okay at the same time. This your story, your journey and it will unfold at a pace you're willing to accept. I have learned recently, to let go, just create what move on. It is your life force. That feeling when your are so absorbed in whatever it is you are creating. When time zooms by and feels like mintues have past, but it's been hours. Crazy, but wonderful. That feeling of satisfaction and joy. Wow, we get to experience nirvana and most people will never know that feeling. To me, that's sad, but it makes you very special. You are an artist, because you create. Have fun and love what you do. Okay, I'm done ranting. I just love to vent. Thanks for all your advise. You're awesome. 🎨
I say you do you. Everyone is different and different areas may deserve different types. My area likes prints because it’s affordable and easy to take home. Yet some want originals. Hell try them all, see what works.
In the college context, it's not true at all. Most colleges won't hire you if your not a working artist. Same with other subjects. Einstein was a teacher.
Fuck yeah! I've been struggling with this avenue for a few months now and once again I have found clarity via your video Rafi. Cheers mate and keep being awesome 😁🤘
I totally agree. I created a painting of the F-14 Tomcat with the commanding officer's modex number of 100. A guy wanted me to change the number only to match his wish. I could have made the extra money, but to me an exact copy with a different modex number would just spoil the originality of the work. I offer giclee prints. They are so close to the real thing most people don't know the difference when viewing; and they get it for a much lower price than the original painting.

This gives me a great idea! I’m a watercolor artist but making a print and doing a mixed media piece with it might lead to extra income for craft shows. (Plus would be so fun to make it unique!)
4:57 Matisse created a lot of versions of the blue nude before settling on the definitive one we all know, I’m sure he wouldn’t have been against those being up for sale too though. They’re all slightly different. My your mind is amaze dudes are all different after the first trail and tribulations I found a way to reproduce, won’t be as detailed as the one which sold but I can make them to order , all different but one of the same.
I wanted to sell copies of my drawings. I learned printmaking as an artform. Etching, collagraphs and eventually photograms. The first two are done on a printmaking press and the third is done in a photographic wet darkroom. Unfortunately i no longer have access to a press or darkroom but I can still prepare my prints. I use copper, aluminium or lino for the print making or glear acetate for the photographic processes. But this is a different concept to making prints from photos of paintings or drawings.
I agree with you on so many levels... but... there are some individuals who are self-appointed “professional” artists. For instance, I like to sing in the shower and in my car, but I can’t carry a tune. Even if my friends and family enjoy my singing, I would never approach a coffee shop or bar and ask to perform gigs. That should be reserved for karaoke. 😂 I believe the same principle really should apply toward art. There still should be talent and technique considered before claiming to be a “professional” artist. If a person enjoys creating, that’s awesome... but creating a painting in a paint and slip class does not make one an “artist”! Btw, awesome video series! Thanks for all your tips and advice!👩🏻🎨
I replicated an original work by request. The collector who owned the first one got quite miffed. Even though it is my intellectual property, and I'm free to paint whatever I like, I get it. I understand his point of view, and have since decided that I will not likely do it again.
couldn't agree with you guys more ... question on prints you make: when you do multiple prints of the same piece do you, or have you considered doing, numbering them as in a limited edition series (23/150?) ... and how do you yourself create prints of your work - do you like go to office depot? once again, thanks for sharing all your incredible life lessons!!!!
Great advice as always. I plan to go all in. I will have to go back to my old career briefly. I know have a game plan to invest in my own high end professional printer to do my professional prints. I believe the investment in self will be well worth it. Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work.
LOVE the prints on wood! Couldn't quite see how you attach the hanging wire on the back? I do oils on small canvas or wood panels and trying to find the easiest, best way to attach wire? Also what model of Canon printer ? Tyvm!!! 😍
Hey Rafi. Struggling with the Print Paradox lately as well. One gallery would not carry my work if I was known for making prints of my work. Only wanted originals...no prints EVER! I have decided to do prints of some pieces. Like your idea of mounting on wood and 'finishing' each one a little differently. Would you share your process/wood mounting and materials ? Thanks Rafi💜🙏
What an artist does with his or her work is their business. If you're in business to sell your work it's the public perception that will determine what's acceptable and what's not.
I think you have to make yourself happy first. You can drive yourself crazy trying figure out what other people like. It just varies too much. At least that has been my experience. As far as compromise, what are your thoughts about someone like Bob Ross or Terry Redlin? Did they compromise themselves into irrelevance?
I'm actually thinking of expaning my 'Lady in Red' since it does so well and I already have 2 so why not? I combines all the stuff i love to illustrate.
Hi you awesome guys, could you please show me the hanging contraption on the back of your wood prints. I guess I could bend the wire, but how is it connected to the wood? Forever grateful! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
I feel kinda like you about prints. I always feel like it’s sort of cheating the customer. I think it’s cool for every piece of art I do to be one of a kind and sort of market myself that way. But also if someone is going to buy my art, I want to give them quality. If they couldn’t afford it, I would even go so far as to negotiate a lower reasonable price. But quite a few people have said to me that if I keep doing that, then it’s not fair to others who have bought my art cuz it devalues the art (and myself) and makes it seem like it isn’t worth the canvas it’s painted on. 😄 Idk what do you think? What about selling prints of a peice you are not willing to sell? Is that OK because I have a few peices I could never sell the original of but I still want to share them with people.

Hey Rafi, I want to make ´fan art´, but I don´t know if it´s legal if I sell it... I want to make massive landscapes out of films. Do you know if I can sell that? I will be making changes to make the paintings ´my own´, but still, the concept is still out of a film. Will the film companies request a part of the profit? Or won´t it be legal at all to sell this?
