    One of the things you didn’t cover and why I think some of your top images sell more is actually warm colours. I think most people who buy a print to hang on a wall at home like warm tones as it makes the room feel warmer. I know most of my favourite images of my own are dramatic, stormy and cooler images but my wife prefers the warmer sunset ones for hanging in the living room etc. The cooler images are banished to the hall way 😐

      This is a really important point. People do not want to be at home and feel cold and I have seen other photographers talk about this. I recall Stuart McGlennon say it when I watched one of his videos recently

      I think geography might add some color bias as well. When I lived in TX, a warm climate, I liked ‘cooler’ colored prints. Now that I live in the north east, USA, I prefer warmer colored prints.

      Great point. I love 'snow' pictures, but to some people, the image projects a feeling of 'cold'.

      A very interesting video on what people look for when purchasing a print. I put my photographs on on a site called Ephotozine, to be viewed,voted and commented on, I am surprised as to what people regard as a good photograph to what they see as not so good, I also print my work, just for my own pleasure, beats looking at it on a screen, it's a case of I took that shot, and I printed it...... Thank you for sharing..

    Thanks for the info Niglel. In keeping with your targeting marketing (like your San Francisco image) the best advice I ever got was from Colorado landscape photographer Doug Bennett. " Shoot local, sell local."

    Liking on Instagram means one likes the photo. Purchasing a print means someone likes the print + it fits with ones decor. This added parameter, I think, might explain the variance btwn liked vs sold. Monochrome/ duotone, subdued colors are more versatile for fitting in - thus sell more.

      You are right. But there's even more: There is also a difference between thinking "Nice pic", and being ready and able to invest the money. People might give a like to 100 photos per day but they sure won't buy all of them. And in my personal case: I never buy any prints for the simple reason that I prefer to hang my own photos on my walls.

      It could be a simple case of demographics - the majority of Instagram users are teenagers, also many of your Instagram followers are likely to be fellow photographers and students of your work. Xx

    As photographers, our personal favourites are often closely tied to the memories or experiences we had while taking them. I'm thinking that most potential buyers don't care that you hiked 3 miles uphill both ways in a thunderstorm to get that special shot or about the good time in the pub you had with people you've met after the shoot. However, the journey is as important as the destination for me. Unfortunately, aside from a video, it's difficult to convey those experiential aspects to potential customers. Of course, some just don't care about the backstory and only like the print for what it is. We can all do with some more customers of the latter type.

    Perfect timing with this video. I just started printing my photos as well and it is actually unbelievable exciting. It’s such a huge difference to hold a printed version of your work in your hands instead of seeing is just one the screen.
    I started selling my prints maybe 3 months ago on the streets and I actually can make a living out of it. And it’s not just the money, it is so interesting and valuable in so many ways to do this on the streets.
    Katoomba, my current locations is just perfect to do so, but I can recommend to anyone to give it a go.

      Yeah, it’s actually quiet alright. Katoomba or Leura is a good place for selling. A lot of tourists from Sydney come here.

    I love to see how people work, what workflow they use, what tools (SW, HW, pencil, paper...) and (!) very important for me, what is the mood and atmosphere of the specific working environment. That I love the most to discover. I always look at your room in your videos, the stuff around you, your furniture, I like the good trend of stepping your room onto higher level throughout the years... Great job! And your voice is very comforting, what I appreciate a lot!

    Thanks for this Nigel. Been following you for years and always appreciated the way you articulate things. As an avid amateur African wildlife photographer I’ve really been climbing a mental mountain over not only whether my work is even good enough to sell, but also how best to present it in print form. This video was excellent and gave me some great ideas.

    The Madeira pics on instagram will have been viewed and liked by people looking to holiday there, not just photographers. Prints are sold not just to photographers but to whole families. The beach photo with the strong foreground will be popular with everyone in the family. The blue seascape with the rocks in the front is fabulous but blue pictures will be less popular because they can create a less than homely feeling in the house. Either warm colours or those with a strong talking point are likely to be most popular with a whole family. I love the black and white stark photo of the house, but I wouldn't want it in my home. These are just my views for what they're worth, but I understand that not everyone will agree.

      I agree. When I printed some of my own pictures for my living room, I also wanted something a bit warm and welcoming, so I decided against one of my favorite pictures that was taken in cool bluish snow.

    Nigel, I’m a wedding/portrait guy from the 80s/90s out of the working craft for many years. Now making my way back in and I find your work inspiring and motivating. Would you mind sharing some of the sources you’ve found for things like your packaging, shipping and presentation materials? Maybe your certificates and stamps? No one seems to cover the more practical aspects of the daily experience of selling prints. Thanks!

    My hobby started to get to a point to be handled more seriously....without loosing the fun of making pictures I started the whole process of website, select my photooos, profiling my screen and output, select paper and just start having even more fun. Thanks for helping me out...I really like your posts on your youtube channel....I might start that as well.. but will never be so good as yours. Thanks Nigel!!

    Nigel,
    I always enjoy your videos and your work. It is some of the best in landscapes. In my fifty years of photography I have made more prints (mostly darkroom) than I could ever sell. I am a much better photographer than a marketer. I think many photographers fail to ever reach an audience for their work. It is easy to focus on that aspect and lose the main desire to make new images. I recently have been donating my work and on occasions I randomly send out a large unsigned photos to unknown people that live in an area I have photographed. Keep up the good work and the inspiring videos.

    Nigel - surprising that I am one of only two purchasers of Janela. I loved the shot, but bought it primarily because of the name and its resemblance to my deceased Dad and my loving 2-year old grandson, both named James Annello. Thanks for sharing your goodness every Sunday with us.

    Great video once again. I find printing my images has helped me grow and helped me learn by physically being able to see my faults that are sometimes lost on my computer. Printing them and looking at them for a matter of time really helps you spot those mistakes and also more importantly what you love about what you love about the image you’ve taken.

    Out of all the image you've shown today, the two I like the most are the top two. It's not any 'fairy tail' content but the drama and mood that appeals to me. Last year I was challenged by sister to post an image on FB each day during the first Lockdown. Most of which were landscapes images. It proved a cathartic process; kept me occupied, improved my processing skills, and a vast LR catalog got a thorough sorting. Many overlooked photos were given new life, a few of which are now portfolio images. It resulted in a book, the likes of which I would have never of thought to produce. However, by far the most surprising aspect was which images proved the most popular. With an audience of mostly friend, relatives and photographers, the fairer sex and non-photographers seemed to prefer the more colourful, scenic, and what I'd describe as more postcard-like images, men and photographers tended to choose the more moody, dramatic, and B&W. I'm posting again this lockdown, but now often choose images based on what I think my audience prefer, but still get some surprises. Food for thought.

    Interesting stuff as always Nigel...I've sold my images for a while..without doubt my best (as in unique/hours spent achieving/composition/difficulty rating) images are some of my wildlife images but wildlife images just don't sell in any numbers. Not many people want a Barn Owl on their wall (sadly!!) and easily my best sellers are waves/landscapes/beaches. My take is that it helps if the image is flexible in that it can go on most walls in a house. So my best seller of a huge wave crashing over a Harris offshore rock is (as you mention) 2-3 pastel colours dominating, some drama, small details that draw you back to it and could go on any wall in any room in the house. Innocuous and easy on the eye seem the key factors ! Agree with you re pricing as well. All photographers should value their work and time properly.

    Great video. Videos like this help flush out the whole photographic process of getting a photo hanging on a wall. Your packaging is very classy and that helps target a specific upscale market that appreciates such things. I would buy a print for a gift for one of my clients because of it.

    Recently, I've been receiving requests for prints and I'm just not set up to do it at all so I'm sadly turning people away. My first thought was to drop ship from a reputable lab, but this video made me question that. While I'd still order from a lab, the boxing, the custom tubes, the process really... I'd love to see a more detailed look into your workflow and how you even found these custom products/knew what to look for.

      If it’s any consolation, I’ve found a good percentage of requests for prints result in no sale. I’ll make the print available and then they won’t buy. People are fickle

    Very very good video👍 About Foreground: My thesis is that paying customers are not
    interested in stones and grass but in great mountains or a beautiful sea. They see stones and grass at home
    around the corner.
    The theme foreground seems to be primarily a visual obsession of landscape photographers.

    Excellent vlog, I remember a comment when I went on a course is the best feeling is to print, that way you can see things far better than the screen - so my favourite prints get printed to at least 15x10 and I tend to use different style of papers to see the different way a print reacts. I currently have a favourite picture from the recent cold weather of a frosty morning but as it was a blue and misty but it makes people feel cold and people want warmth. I feel with your photos, like your books, you research everything and making the whole process more about quality. keep up the good work

    This was really great, thanks! Would love to see a video on your actual workflow and process for getting an image from the computer to the printer and how you get it to the customer. For example, are you using your own printer or do you outsource it, how do you determine shipping costs, and how do you package it and what materials do you use... This would be fascinating to see.

    The main thing I've taken away from selling prints is, as you've proved, that it's hard to read the room for what people want. My images are known for and filled with warm tones, yet my most sold print is cold, dark and blue from a stormy day... It might be location and gallery dependant, but having an exhibition doesn't guarantee many sales - found that out the hard way 😬🤣 How well landscape photography prints would take, I don't know, but interior designers can be a key to some bigger sales 👍

    I go on Instagram and like every photo from everyone I follow, I usually don't look for too long but wanna show my support to the photographers I like. Instagram just makes a lot of beautiful photos look decent and it's a bit sad.

    Very interesting video. I admire anyone who sells prints, especially images of places people may not have personally visited. The Golden Gate Bridge sales are an excellent example of a buyer having an emotional/physical connection with a location, and the Facebook marketing campaign was a really clever way of marketing to those people living in the area.

    Very helpful, many thanks. I recently rented a small atelier/studio in our old town (mainly as a non-home home-office for my day job), but placed a couple of prints in the window and already sold one. It was one of the few black and white images I have. Being able to sell framed work with direct contact enables some implicit storytelling around the pictures and having the work framed on display is good for impulse buyers, I guess. But framing it right (to the image AND the customers interior) adds another level of complexity.

    Awesome video Nigel! I really like these sort of videos because it demystifies some of the angles of printing images for someone like myself who is looking to sell my work in the future. Btw, your packaging for your prints looks really nice. There's lots of good details that a buyer would notice like the embossing, Pebbles sticker, etc.

    Make prints for yourself, I do... because for me the underlining message in this video is my chances of selling prices to a general audience is about nil...and the number one way that most make sells is from a successful YT channel.

    A wonderful video. I greatly appreciate your presentation, sharing your personal experience. It is good to know that there are potential customers for prints, especially the larger variety. I had begun to think that few people wanted permanent prints of images larger than those shown on their iPhone. BTW, I try to watch all your RUclips videos. Most enjoyable. Please keep it up!

    its colours that sell, brown more popular than blue, print the blue pebbles in beiges and it'll sell better

    Thanks for the tips, I’ve just lost my job and I’m having this idea in my mind that this might be a good time to focus more on my hobby (photography) and perhaps make some money in the process. Awesome video by the way

    Thank you so much. I'm just learning. I went back to school at 52 to learn to be a good photographer and I love all of your video's. I would love to one day sell some prints. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. What kind of paper do you print on and is it matt or glossy? I already love the sound of the paper when you hold it 😅🥰🤣

    I love the tactile perspective of not just the physical prints, but also the embossing on the certificate of authenticity and thought given to quality and design of the packaging. I've been asked about digital prints and I think this video really nails down some good arguments of why digital downloads style sales aren't a good long term idea.
    I doubt I will ever get enough sales to justify the cost of purchasing an A1 printer or the inks. What are some of the things to look out for when utilising a printing service?
