@@CarSkullpersonally not a fan of the civic. Really bland/vanilla car. Was planning on getting a bmw 1 series but this seemed much better bang for buck. Plus aggressive front end. Sporty back.
Nothing beats an incredibly amusing yet very informative review. I really liked it and to me the Mazda3 sedan is the best looking compact on the streets.
This is a great city car. The hatchback has a ton of room in the rear. People are always surprised I can fit my whole bike back there without even taking the front wheel off. And the interior just has such beautiful simplicity. It's been fun to drive, and I'll be happy keeping it for a long time.
In the past I have owned two Mazda Proteges. I'm currently driving a 2013 Mazda 3 with the SkyActiv engine. When I get up around 100k miles, I will consider getting my 2nd Mazda 3. Can't argue with success.

David B hmm. cant remember. it was one site. folks in the comment section were complaining about transmission problems. kbb gave it 3/5 stars for reliability. other than that, all I hear is good things.
I think Consumers Reports gave both the Protege and the 3 very high scores for reliability. The types of sites that are more driver experience oriented seemed to enjoy driving them.
Currently shopping for a new car. Never realized how slick and beautiful Mazda have made their vehicles. I made a list of top 10 cars I'm interested in and 5 of those are Mazda. The Mazda3 Sedan is looking awesome and so is the Mazda6. Hard choice.
I've had mine for 4 months and I'm quite pleased to say it's the best car I've ever driven, and I've driven many cars. The manual transmission is so smooth and effective it rivals something you'd find in a BMW or Alfa Romeo.
This is the first car review from KBB I've seen in some time. Enthusiastic, well-presented review, KBB. You covered all or most bases of interest, compared it to competitors, described the trim lines, ect. I like the formula you used here, even though some might describe the host as a bit eccentric, (probably intended) it worked for me. Great review. Was thinking of the Jetta or Elantra, but now I'm heavily considering the Mazda 3. The add-ons are very practical and aren't as crazy expensive as some other car makers.
Noah Harvey - I actually went with leasing a 2019 Honda Civic EX. Great features, great price-to-value ratio, excellent gas mileage. Japanese cars in-general keep their value better I find.
After a lot of thought between all the cars, including leg, headroom, and everything overall, I have to truly say from the bottom of my heart...'No comment'.
I've just bought the Mazda 3 Sport Fastback (Sudan), this will be my 4th Mazda and I think one thing that has been missed for this and other reviews is the reliability of the cars, I've never had one break down, from the 323 F (with pop up headlights), 323F in 2001, Mazda 6 Tamura 2007 to my new Mazda 3 (coming in a couple of weeks, depending on how choppy the seas are from Japan)...
You can't really speak on reliability if you don't have any of those cars 10 years later. There is a reason why vehicles like the Toyota Tacoma and Honda Civic retain such good resale value, they simply just last and you see their older reiterations all the time on the road.
That's why I bought the Mazda3 2014. I love mazda. My fuel combine average is 34.5 and it's a manual transmission. I think I can do better :) Such a sexy car.

The top trim of this car cost $36,000 Canadian here where as the top trim of other cost cost arnd $30k-31k, and the volume seller of this car doesn't even offer as much as the competition. If all you care about is zoom zoom then this is your car. I do like the look of it and handling etc... but hate the price and the stuff you get with that price.
I dunno about that, with that much tech you will have to go way higher than 30k if you bought another brand, think how much you will pay if you get those safety and tech features in a German car. I think its fair for the top of the range model
For 26K+ (Mazda3 S GT), why wouldn't someone get the 2015 WRX instead? 184hp vs 268 hp + awd, zoom zoom or not, 80+ more hp while in the same category (compact car), got to be more fun, right?
Maybe I am getting old, and I am but cannot imagine why anyone would want to drive a manual. Also my 3 has paddles and can use the centre stick as well as sort of manual.
Great video and presentation :) The Sport has an awesome profile! The GT Manual is definitely high on my list as my new daily driver. My dad has 2014 GT and the 184 horsepower is very peppy and acceleration happy.
So far I have the Mazda 3 and Elantra GT has the hatchbacks I am interested in. I'm just waiting to see what Honda has to offer with the new hatchback they plan on producing.
+SKEMETUBE Good choices. The things that point me to the 2016 Elantra GT was the 173 HP and the massive interior volume. My only beef with the Mazda was the screen extending above the sweeping dash.
So what do you think is better? I'm still liking the Mazda over the new Civic mainly because I really like the Mazda's styling. You can get the Mazda with a heated steering wheel which is awesome during the cold winters. Also it has a Bose Speaker System. It can also get 184 horsepower on regular gas. Where the Civic Hatch needs more expensive premium gas.
Which do you guys think looks better? The sedan or hatchback? With current rebates I’m also looking at the Mazda 6 touring? Should I go for the Mazda 3 sedan/hatchback?? Or for the Mazda 6?
GREAT review once again Micah. Rumor has it the 2.5 will soon get the manual transmission. No word on date of release other than sometime in 2014. I like the i Grand Touring but I think the s Grand Touring looks better with the center mounted tach. What's your opinion?
you missed the Elantra-based Kia Forte (noted at the very end); it has the rear legroom even when sitting behind the driver ... I'm impressed...but then you can get the Mazda6 if you want more rear leg space
after 8 years with the great original Mazda3 with no ABS, no stability control and of course lighter...a good car now if I could get in and out without contortions....just could not go fast enough on the street to make it intersting in the Mazda...the Forte sedan does it for me loaded with extras and abn interesting balqance on the well damped ride.
I have a ford focus that has gave me nothing but problems since I bought it 3 years ago... this would definitely get me to trade up and move on. I love mazdas! I grew up with them :) Great machines!!!
I think I have the Mazda 8 and I know I have the Mazda 3 and in my opinion I think they are both sexy cars the Mazda 8 is fully black interior and exterior even the rims are black and the Mazda 3 comes in the chrome-ish red color like the one in this ad
What abut the Skyactiv engine? is it truly better? Is it reliable? is it pricier in maintenance? What about the gear? why regular automatic when rivals are switching to CVT? is it better?
The CVT's I've been seeing are getting lesser gas mileage than this Skyactiv engine. A lot of people hate the CVT because it tends to sap power to ensure peak MPG.
mig ran I own a 2015 3 with the 6 speed automatic. I've test drove the Honda Civic aswell. I can tell you that the 6 speed automatic is vastly superior to the CVT. More engaging to drive, gets better gas mileage then the Civic, and CVT's are much more costly to repair if something goes wrong. Not to mention the power delivery with the 6 speed auto isnt even comparable. Better gas mileage without sacrificing efficency.
mig ran No one seems to have answered your question. My turn. Lots of Japanese brands are switching to CVTs because they're cheaper to build and are supposedly more fuel efficient than your traditional automatic. However, they are not engaging to drive and that's one of the main problems. I've read many articles and comments where reviewers and consumers have complained about their CVTs failing at just 60-80k miles, and the repair cost them over $4,000. CVTs also use different transmission fluid, a fluid that is 3 times more expensive than the one used in a traditional automatic. I've been thinking about getting a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla with a CVT, but after doing research on them, I'm not even going to consider it anymore. I've read some forums and haven't seen anyone complain about engine failure. I think it's rather early to tell how reliable Mazda's Skyactiv will be over time. According to CarComplaints: www.carcomplaints.com/Mazda/MAZDA3/, there doesn't seem to be many complaints. I don't own a Mazda 3 (I might soon though) so I can't answer if it's truly better or if it's pricier to maintain.
I can say that I've now owned my Subaru Legacy (2015) since December 2014 and u have found the CVS to be not only a power sapper, but gas mileage is crap. About 22 to 24mpg mostly for a 4-banger engine. Whatever... My biggest complaint is that it has no power to accelerate from a stop. It has made it stressful to get to even get up to 35MPH traffic speeds on my road next to my home as I go to work. I step on the gas and the computer / CVT say "Nope! Haha! You're going to accelerate about as fast as a Ferris Wheel!"
I really like my 1st Gen 2006 Mazda 3 Grand Touring with manual transmission. I preferred it much more than 2nd Gen interior. haven't tried 3rd Gen, but 3rd Gen interior looks much better than the 2nd Gen. I like the light get go and tossable feeling of the Gen 1 and pop out Navi.
Hi, I have a question you may be able to answer. I own a 2014 Mazda 3 in Titanium Flash Mica. Is this color the same as Titanium Flash Pearl? I'm trying to buy a RH passenger side view mirror.
I've had a hatch Mazda 3 for about 5 months. OK, is it just me or is the gauge of steel on this car ridiculously thin? I can flex it with my thumb. The bumper in the front serves no purpose. If you get backed into your grill will break into a million plastic bits. I've already had a minor slow collision in a tight garage which inverted the back plastic ( say "composite" to keep it sounding sophisticated, not cheap) bumper, which I got fixed. Note, I understand the following: That recent model cars are built to take collisions, to collapse to absorb the impact and have good safety records. But in minor collisions, you're really screwed with cars like these! And an insurance guy was telling me that the expense of minor collisions are going up as a result. Even styrofoam was better than nothing between a plastic bumper and steel! Another complaint is getting a car and Mazda expects you to pay extra for their navigation system. This is petty and a needless gouge. I like the utility of the car. I like the way it handles. Sometimes the car will buck when in low gear, when you can't get past 1st or 2nd. I've driven manuals most of my life and never encountered that before. The lesson I've learned here is that a good-looking car can be made very cheaply... and again, I can hear people say, "It's built light to keep the mileage down". And my answer is that I don't want to be paying big bucks for a minor rear or front repair that never would have even happened in car bumpers built 12 years ago. Whatever extra weight it would add would be negligible, given the actual alternative. It's simply an excuse to cut cost and I'm calling B.S. on that one. BTW, the compartment that holds the crappy jack in the back has a cover that is even thinner than cardboard. It's a stunning disappointing when you realize just how skin-deep beauty can be.
HI, I have a question: I own a Mazda3 here in Colombia where services are recommended to be done every 5000 kilometers (3106 miles) which I think is waay too often! I want to know the maintainance in the United States. I found out in Canada is every 8000 mi which is12874 kilometers and when I made the conversion I was shocked, but I also noticed that the said maintainance is made to canadian driving conditions which made me wonder that check ups in Colombia are more often because of the poor quality of our streets... Anyway too much info for such a little info tip I wanna know. And yes im typing this in all KBB Mazda reviews :)
Great review. The worst thing about the Mazda 3 is the pop-up infotainment system. Could it be upgradable? Probably not. And the lack of choices for their interior color. I know the white/beige is an option but it's very rare to see one out there for sale. Black is way too black. I love the front fascia but the way they finished the rear is horrendous. It's like two different designers went at it - "you take the back and I'll take the front." Feels unfinished. Regardless of all this I am actually in the market to buy one used. I hope it's reliable.
+brocky they are quite reliable, and I love mine... but they arent that expensive from the dealership, I'd rather get a new one then wait for a used one.
+brocky I wish more cars would offer a gray interior, like a medium gray or dark gray, that is a great color. I owned the Mazda 3 with black interior, not a good color choice here in Florida, but after owning a previous car with beige interior, I could never do another car with old fart beige interior again, just don't like that color.
I am thinking of getting a mazda 3 base model auto but it is my first time buying. all the invoice prices I find online are ~18100 which is only few hundred dollars lower than MSRP of 18875. I was wondering how much lower I can negotiate. How much did you guys pay for this car, excluding fees such as destination, acquisition, etc. please help!
Awesome video very informative just what I needed. I was thinking between a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze or this Mazda three. I think I just made up my mind :)
The way I'm looking at I will be a mazda man when I am older. Nothing beats how sexy their cars look and run. Some might say girl cars but if you got a hatchback and some nice fix ups it can look very manly will giving you good mpg and power.
Just got done car shopping acura rsx 2004. Badass hatchback sporty car with good gas mileage. Perfect man. Paid it cash. haha. Way better than getting the new mazda. By the time I am older I will not want a mazda lol I'll want subaru or audi.
After 8 years with the Mazda3..great performance and gas milage... 32mpg average...but now I got a Forte which rides like an Audi...surprise ...turned out it was designed by the Audi engineer Peter Schreyer...that explains it
Franz K you think you're. Clever. However, how a car is cosmetically designed has nothing to do with how it rides. And Peter Schreyer is an artist not an engineer.
1) 2016 Scion iA 2) 2016 Honda fit 3) 2016 Honda Civic 4) 2016 Mazda3. I am having trouble deciding on what car I should get. I have shortened the list down to these 4 cars. If I were to purchase any one of these cars, it would be the base model and automatic. What do you guys think? Which car would you choose and why? Thanks for the feedback. I can't decide!
You know the ia is typically mazda 2 right? I am leaning to the mazda 3 but for the money civic 2016 with ex-t trim or ex will beat mazda 3 all dayy! You got smart key, apple car play, lcd driver display, electronic break and even remote start for under 20k$. Actually, none can beat civic for now.
are skyactiv engines with direct injection as prone to carbon build up as others? i was looking into getting the mazda6 until i found out it was a gdi.. makes me hesitant. i want a car that wont have to be in the shop every 50k miles to remove the build up... i also know nothing really about cars and wouldnt feel comfortable trying to clean it myself. toyotas dont interest me, honda accord is my other choice however the newer models are also gdi engines.
Some feature on the mazda might disappear over time, like the Navigation in Active Driving Display no more works on North America cars. Other feature may also have same fate.I have a mazda 3 2014 Touring, dont buy looking at the features else you will have my experience.
mazda is nice but the 2017 elantra is very stylish and interior is luxurious I don't think it's a powerful as the mazda I could be wrong but I'm not trying to race out on the streets If that were the case I'd just buy a sports car but I'd have to say comparing both, elantra was a lot more luxurious, smoother ride, and very roomy but everyone has a different taste in what they like I say get what you like if you get behind the wheel and you feel good then that's the one! end of the day a new car is a new car and will get u from point A to B to C ect...
I've seen two in San Francisco with shirts thrown over the protruding dash screen. The average methamphetamine-dependent homeless person may see a valuable tablet on the dash. My whole career is dedicated to this population, so I can make trite digs; you can't. I took a pal to see this car and that was his first and fatal concern----he would not buy this car because the screen is too tempting to street crime for street parking. A garage in SF is $800+ a month. Too bad it doesn't retract; great car.
Wait a second! Why am I seeing a "tail fin" radio antenna??? My 2013 Mazda 3 has no external antenna which is cool! There is an unobtrusive metallic grid embedded in the front window instead.
Tuppoo94 Most European cars have smaller engines than their counterparts in North America. Europeans like smaller engines that are quieter and more fuel economical.
+gsh0ck3d Not bad own a 2014 CX5 with projector headlights and fog lights too. But they are no where as nice as the hid or led headlights miss my CX9 HIDs. I might change them in the future
The quality is just okay!! Cant say it's good cause the HId is way more better and looks cool too. Thinking about buying one, but its 700$ for a pair tho!

Yes. I would take the Mazda over the Civic.
Civic has the cvt and the turbo.
I like naturally aspirated engines, fewer complications.
Which do you guys think looks better? The sedan or hatchback? With current rebates I’m also looking at the Mazda 6 touring? Should I go for the Mazda 3 sedan/hatchback?? Or for the Mazda 6?
I went with the Civic but I enjoyed the test drive with the Sport. Civic won due to my own personal preferences. Cant go wrong with either or.
Civic 2016 with turbo engine is a good sporty car too! with load of tech, including lane keeping assistance that almost steers the car for you.
I grew up with them :) Great machines!!!
no shit, i hate my focus.. am about to switch to a mazda3 sportsline
Nice review, great reviewer!
I think I have the Mazda 8 and I know I have the Mazda 3 and in my opinion I think they are both sexy cars the Mazda 8 is fully black interior and exterior even the rims are black and the Mazda 3 comes in the chrome-ish red color like the one in this ad
Excellent review
I've found the CVT to be a huge power sapper as well.
mig ran No one seems to have answered your question.
I really am interested to know how much this car actually weights in total mass?
I still drive this car and love it, though it's the automatic 😢
Do you find the 2l is good to move from the lights fast?
I really like my 1st Gen 2006 Mazda 3 Grand Touring with manual transmission. I preferred it much more than 2nd Gen interior. haven't tried 3rd Gen, but 3rd Gen interior looks much better than the 2nd Gen. I like the light get go and tossable feeling of the Gen 1 and pop out Navi.
Great review! Great car, well done mazda!!
I've always liked mazda3's, but I LOVE the hatchback versions. They always look amazing, but I guess I'm more of a hatchback guy anyways.
Hi, I have a question you may be able to answer. I own a 2014 Mazda 3 in Titanium Flash Mica. Is this color the same as Titanium Flash Pearl? I'm trying to buy a RH passenger side view mirror.
6'6'' here and I don't have any issues with leg room in the front seats. Hell I don't even have my seat all the way back.
Where did you shoot this? I'd like to check out the scenery myself.
I liked the older one even with the smiley face
The 2012, and 2013 Mazda 3's for some reason look more substantial to me.
And yes im typing this in all KBB Mazda reviews :)
here in germany its every year or 20.000km. Depends on which is first.
I hope it's reliable.
racist
How much did you guys pay for this car, excluding fees such as destination, acquisition, etc. please help!
just buy used. got a 2006 for 7k
+ちらし덮밥 buy it now and shop around in different dealerships there is all sorts of incentives right now.
I have a 2012 Mazda3. I love my car, but OMG these are gorgeous. I really wish they came as a hybrid though.
+Lindsay Resnick then again, it doesn't really need to be a hybrid with its efficiency
+Lindsay Resnick then again, it doesn't really need to be a hybrid with its efficiency
***** That's true. I've been thinking about that a lot with my unrealistic dream of getting one of these.
+Lindsay Resnick They actually do come as a hybrid. The fine print is that you can only get it in Japan, it's based off of Toyota's hybrid system.
Awesome video very informative just what I needed.
I was thinking between a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze or this Mazda three. I think I just made up my mind :)
Wow that ipad looking dash is eye candy for the thieves..
On my third Mazda. Fantastic, sexy cars for the price.
how is the 2016 mazda 3 on a video posted in 2014 ?
nothing changed from 14 to 16
The way I'm looking at I will be a mazda man when I am older. Nothing beats how sexy their cars look and run. Some might say girl cars but if you got a hatchback and some nice fix ups it can look very manly will giving you good mpg and power.
I'm too old for the new Mazda
I never get how some people say that Mazda is "Girls" car? .. how I just dont get it
Does mazda still have the old engine where it drinks a lots of oil engine?
Yeah man I agree. I need to test drive the civic and see how I like the cvt.
are skyactiv engines with direct injection as prone to carbon build up as others? i was looking into getting the mazda6 until i found out it was a gdi.. makes me hesitant. i want a car that wont have to be in the shop every 50k miles to remove the build up... i also know nothing really about cars and wouldnt feel comfortable trying to clean it myself. toyotas dont interest me, honda accord is my other choice however the newer models are also gdi engines.
Some feature on the mazda might disappear over time, like the Navigation in Active Driving Display no more works on North America cars. Other feature may also have same fate.I have a mazda 3 2014 Touring, dont buy looking at the features else you will have my experience.
English???
mazda is nice but the 2017 elantra is very stylish and interior is luxurious I don't think it's a powerful as the mazda I could be wrong but I'm not trying to race out on the streets If that were the case I'd just buy a sports car but I'd have to say comparing both, elantra was a lot more luxurious, smoother ride, and very roomy but everyone has a different taste in what they like I say get what you like if you get behind the wheel and you feel good then that's the one! end of the day a new car is a new car and will get u from point A to B to C ect...
Great review Micah!
Why are all the reviews cars' color red?
Would you recommend this car to a college student? For the price and all?
ItsEganTime yes. the Mazda Mazda3 is easily one of the best deals and in my opinion has the best car:price ratio. hope this helps :)
Coal Durnehviir Thanks, I will think about it.
itsThatTime EGAN I FOUND YOU AGAIN
good review.. . but check out the 2014 Lexus CT 200 H
Got two small boys now. 3 year old, 2 month old.
This, the Cx3 or cx5?
CX5 would be a no brainer for families. The Mazda 3 would be 2nd.
The only reason to choose the CX3 over the Mazda 3 is if you need AWD.
2.5 liter I4 sounds a bit big for a compact car like this. In Europe this car is available with a 1.5 liter I4 as well as the 2 liter I4.
Tuppoo94 Most European cars have smaller engines than their counterparts in North America. Europeans like smaller engines that are quieter and more fuel economical.
Hey guys, how did you find the light quality of the headlights at night?
+gsh0ck3d Not bad own a 2014 CX5 with projector headlights and fog lights too. But they are no where as nice as the hid or led headlights miss my CX9 HIDs. I might change them in the future
The quality is just okay!! Cant say it's good cause the HId is way more better and looks cool too. Thinking about buying one, but its 700$ for a pair tho!
Which one of all handles best?
1st gen Mazda3 hatchback.
handles like a sports car. fun fun fun car!
