This video shows the process for making the lower case which includes the Slant Front Desk, desk interior, 20 shaped and dovetailed drawers with the dovetail joinery is cut by hand, shell carvings, desk lid with shell carvings and the shaped and carved ogee feet.
Part 2 will have the show the upper case, doors and Pediment.

    www.doucetteand...
    www.doucetteand...
Finish used is Seal and Royal Lac from
    www.shellacfini...
    Mahogany is from www.irionlumber.com
This Rhode Island Desk and Bookcase is one of the most famous pieces of American Furniture associated with the Townsend Goddard family of cabinetmakers of Newport, Rhode Island. There are nine know examples of this style Block and Shell Carved Desk and Bookcase, all of which are in museums around the country except for one which sold at Christies of New York in 1989 to a private buyer for a record $12.1 Million Dollars. This desk and bookcase is going to be a version based on 4 of the 9 known examples. The four original Secretary Desks this is based on are attributed to John Goddard and are located at the Rhode Island School of Design, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library. We will be making this Desk and Bookcase out of solid South American Mahogany using a spectacular plank of figured mahogany for the Drawer Fronts, Lid, door panels and pediment panels. The interior drawer parts are all made from a single log of tiger maple. The parts will be re-sawn from the larger planks.
All Carvings are done by hand and all of the dovetail joinery is hand cut.

Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

I have been a cabinet and furniture maker for 35 years. I love to watch other woodworkers the Japanese are some of the best, but you are by far the best furniture maker I've ever seen. Watching you actually makes me tear up with joy. No joke.

I agree with you, and I’ll add that I almost tear up, but with frustration. Frustration that, although I’ve been making furniture and doing interior trim for 30 years, I will never been half as good as this guy. I’d be scared to help him, to just install the hinges, or adjust the fit of a door or drawer, for fear of making a mistake and ruining a masterpiece. Many of us can get good at one thing over a lifetime: maybe casework, or carving, or turning, or finishing. How does one guy (such a YOUNG guy!) get to be so great at everything?

I’m a competent amateur cabinet maker and now know how far away I am from the skills you show. There are two elements to any piece. The first is the design - which is personal; I accept that this piece is following the style of an original but the “fussiness” is not my taste. The second part is the skill involved in the process - which is universal; that is outstanding; I would be very fearful about carving the detail on the large slabs, knowing that a single mistake ruins a lot of money.
Although I’m the amateur, I did own a small cabinet shop making bespoke pieces almost exclusively in the Arts and Crafts style. We found that, here in the UK, the market for truly handmade, bespoke pieces of furniture to be very small with a lot of cabinet makers chasing that segment. We did well for a few years but then struggled to sell at a profit. I own the building and so overheads were low but just labour and materials were so high.
Very good quality antique furniture is so cheap over here, particularly at auctions. I recently bought a working 1820 long-case clock at auction for £80 plus fees. The movement will cost me £450 for a clean etc and the case needs minimal repair. It could easily have been left as-was. So, a 2 hundred year old oak long-case clock for just over £100.
I also bought a very nice Arts and Crafts sideboard with its top unit including bevelled mirror. Again in oak, perhaps 1910? Very well made with beautiful original metalwork. £130.
My point is really how could anyone make and sell those items at even 20 times what the antique originals cost me? I accept that the originals come with the knocks of age; but also history, patina, love.
So, over here, anyone can buy antique “brown furniture” cheaply. If you want 20th century, the prices do rise (current vogue appears to be mid-20th century). If you want new, you can buy from people line Oakfurnitureland which is average in quality but solid “hardwood” (from what I’ve seen staves of far-eastern timbers like Mango) but it’s relatively cheap.
So, it’s not hard to see why cabinet making has declined massively. It seems that so many cabinet makers have to turn to starting woodworking schools in order to make a living, one cabinet maker said that, when he analysed his costs, his personal earnings were less than £8 per hour, even allowing for no rent on the building. He only does it because he loves it.
I sincerely hope that D&W continue to find the right sales for their product. Their output can be low numbers, which is good, and their quality deserves success.
