setting - quiet, comfortable, any other family
perception - ‘what have you been told’ ‘what were you expecting’
invitation - ‘results were not as we hoped, would you like to go into them now’ ‘are you the sort of person that likes to know exactly whats going on’
knowledge - small info, slow, clear, precise language
emotions - ‘i can see this is quite a shock for you’ ‘i can see this wasnt what you expected to hear’ ‘im so sorry’
strategy - check patient understanding, agree on management plan
