This is the best performance of La Campanella.
Gitlis' rendition of paganini, in my opinion, is as close as any of else will ever get to hearing Paganini himself. The way he hangs onto, or delays, a note delivery to wrap the entire phrase up in some musical origami. Wonderful.

His playing is so singular on this one that I keep returning to this clip year after year. It is burned in my memory with Ivry's signature upon it.

The "most Gitlis performance" I have ever heard was his aria in G from Bach. I used to have a cassette tape with shorter pieces of Gitlis, which I unfortunately borrowed to someone (of course never got it back). I bought a cd later with the exact same pieces, but Bach was missing... (probably considered too much of a blasphemy). It lives on in my memory as one of the most amazing performances I have ever heard from anyone.
He was a fine player in his day and quite unique in his approach to the violin.

I had the honour to meet him here in South Africa at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. Even in advanced age he still play so elegantly.
He’s everything Heifetz is in terms of technical virtuosity (albeit a little less perfect) but he just has more lushness and richness to his sound. It’s more vibrant and energized, and it’s so lovely to listen to🤩🤩🤩

Maestro is amazing! Old school is the best. They knew how to play violin :)) nowadays people do play in beat according the orchestra but without feelings... bravo Maestro Gitlis! Bravo all old generation musicians . We don’t have you anymore. It was the best feeling when you value Elizabeth Basoff-Darskaia at masterclass in Graz Uni, saying you should pay the ticket for her performance.. and then you talk to Julia Ricci, right from the stage because you found out that Elizabeth was the best student of legendary Ruggiero Ricci, your long time colleague. You are amazing, legendary violinist! Bravo, Maestro!!!
I just heard his name days ago. He is not as well known as Isaac Stern nor Yehudi Menuhin, but his technique is surely ranking among the best violinist in the world.

Previously, performers showed more idiosyncrasy in their interpretations, which made each performance unique. Now, the trend towards standardization leads to the fact that many performances sound the same.

Not fair, not fair for Ivry !! That damn orchestra is going way too fast for him to even get any nuances on what it’s supposed to be Paganini’s second!!!
Ivry, there is a version of your full Paganini second concerto that is in the libraries and the decent RUclips video is just a dress rehearsal and I can tell that. But on this one, they had your ass probably with one of the only two or three videos left for posterity.
