In the "Art of the Violin" video Gitlis described Heifetz as a "kind of a God" and Milstein as " lovable". Gitlis was absolutely both! His art will last and grow!
Came to this from Dave Hurwitz's review. Outstanding. Gitlis must have been ambidextrous because there's perfect balance and unanimity between his hands. Great accompaniment by Mander, unafraid of the tutti leaps.

This performance's splendor of words can not arrive. He holds an unchallenged position as an interpreter of Tchaikovsky The beauty of his violin performance is unrivaled, indescribable, and outclassing
If this were a competition, due to confines of what is considered 'appropriate' and 'correct', this performance would graded harshly. However, personally, I love this interpretation - Gitlis being a legend aside, the 'freedom' and uniqueness as well as the emotional musicality of this performance excites me to no end. I have played this concerto many times over, but the technique of this performance and the cadenza, especially at the speed he does, without mistakes ... is phenomenal. He is clearly playing the piece the way he wants - whether others like his interpretations or tempo or not, as a violinist, I recognize that this performance is downright amazing. And yes, please let us know the details of this performance if possible? Considering everything, great job by the conductor to constantly wring and adjust the orchestra to Gitlis's exuberant/exciting rubato :)
Every time somebody plays some piece it is going to be an interpretation. That’s the beautifulness of non-digital-created music, it’s always going to be different from the previous version. So -I appreciated your comment very much- but I don’t think it is possible to evaluate an interpretation, it’s a matter of taste. Presence of errors is the only thing we can look for and criticize, but rubato is not an error!
I initially felt bad for the orchestra sometimes! You’re absolutely right about this great performance. I’m sometimes looking for the proportions I’m used to hearing but the freedom here can be so liberating...
Thanks so very much for your observations about the 'interpretation' of the legendary composer Tchaikowski. As far as I know he never said that every musician must play it exactly as he wrote it. I believe that all great composers expected that both soloists and orchestras would add their little dressings here and there. Humans are not robots. Mr. Gitlis dressed up what he played with panache and his style of playing and listeners with keen observation would appreciate and enjoy it. And that is what SIR IVRY was all about. He was a good man. I am also a violinist.., just average player., started at age of 7 and have played with small orchestras (averaging around a dozen players). Occasionally I would 'toss in' a little variation to spice things up. Some of my fellow musicians were excellent with off the cuff improvisations. At the end of a session we all felt good. Music is tonic for the soul. I am now six months over 80 and because of the wretched COVID KILLER we have no choice but to take a break and hope that the monster eventually dies. (I mainly use a 4 string electric violin.., and sometimes a 5 string (E.A.D.G and C) Love to use it when I play something written in C mainly because I can 'muck around' with the lower notes on the C string. It is a lot of fun. I use a basic guitar amp with reverb. The effect is very musically satisfying. As it is also the same size as a violin it does not throw me out of kilt so to speak. For the benefit of anyone reading this but is not a musician, a viola is about one and a half times larger than a violin both in length and width. It also has 4 strings. (A.D.G. and C) Dave DV.
