Starting at 7:00 minutes in Milstein pulls in harmonics and in listening to tons of recordings of this concerto he is the only one I have heard do this. The Master.
Not only that, even the recording despite the age brings out the individual parts far better than any other I have heard. The cello parts especially are extremely clear as opposed to the rumble we hear in most recordings.
Milstein, a sublime master of his instrument! Where technical brilliance meets sheer musicality! Having heard a dozen Tchaikovskys, not heard better! Thank you for the post! Jamshed K Delvadavala Mumbai.
He gets the sound of the instrument with a light touch and finesse - the complete opposite of most players these days. I really miss his old school style of playing which as you intimate, lets the instrument sing freely rather than the sound being pummeled out of it.
One of the greatest ever violinists, at the top of his game - each note is like a jewel, and all for the purpose of a noble vision of what he wants to say with the music.
Milstein was far more musical than Heifetz, in my opinion; with Heifetz I get the sense of a showman or competitor that had to be 'the best', rather than a pure musician.
As so often with Milstein, their is too much nervousness in his playing. In all honesty, a child (be it a prodigy) like Himari does a better job. She really lets the music breathe.
You clearly can’t tell the difference between a serious performance and an over expressing performance. He is not nervous at all, I’ve played this this for many years, and performed it a couple of times as well, he may not be as great as Heifetz or Oistrakh, but Himari’s performance is clearly not a better choice.
@@Liebes2732 Himari is top, never heard anyone like her, let alone at that age. You don't know me and you already say what I "clearly can't". This says a lot about your judgement. And of course I didn't say Milstein is nervous, I said he sounds nervous.

FABULOUS!
Inimitable interpretation, nobility of expression, fluency of articulation, all perfectly balanced.

Brillante interpretación .
Bravo
Thank you! And happy 2025 year!
A violinist for the ages !
One of the great artists of the 20th century.
The great, timeless violinist! Thank you for sharing video.
Ok, so no one plays like that these days....AMAZING!!
more is the pity.
This is what I call an ideal performance in every possible way. Certainly my favourite performance of this piece.
Yes, quite, but you forgot Ida Haendel, the great Polish violinist.

12-31-23. Happy Birthday, Dear Maestro Milstein ! We miss you and your magnificent artistry.
The most excellent performance!Extra fat is eliminated, and his violin resonates with air.
That is a very knowledgeable comment! Spot on!

straordinario.... ma Heifetz e' un altro pianeta

@@TB-us7elI will say to you what Glitis said: close your eyes and listen to Hrifetz
