Also, no new dimension, so he was certain he wanted to save his Morty by giving up his collar, despite the fact that he could have gotten a replacement Morty.
i mean it takes some serious lack of feelings to up and let your grandson die and just be like "oop de doo time to steal another Rick's one" cause there'd be no Morty like the morty from his dimension without Rick changing him into who he is now meaning he'd have to go to a dimension where he steals Morty from a dimension Rick didn't make it back and that Morty would be "mortified"
actually, if you read the comics and take another look at "close rickounters of the rick kind" morties are basically treated like slaves and can be replaced at any time from one of the infinite number of spare morties
The selfless bit is debatable. He's ready to give up his life because he doesn't really care much about living anymore. That being said, if there was a situation where his life was more valuable in some way that another person's, he would abandon them right away. That's just who Rick is.
a slice of pizza I know Rick hasn't gone ahead and killed himself yet - but that doesn't mean that finding a reason to go on with life as normal isn't hard for him. It's not as easy as classifying yourself into either one of two categories - someone who cares about living and someone who doesn't. The entire reason behind Rick going on such reckless adventures and is such a regular substance abuser is to make himself feel alive. Rick doesn't want to die right now because he has a family to live for - But this is something Rick has always considered a weakness. The makers of the show themselves have said that Rick is a 'high functioning suicidal alcoholic'. Rick ends up seeing his intellect as an inescapable curse and unable to make choices that could make someone else happy, but the truth is he doesn't do it because he chooses not to. Not because he doesn't care about Morty and his family, but because he's so numbed to the outcome of not caring. Don't get me wrong, I know Rick can be incredibly brave. When the stakes are high and he's in real danger he's not going to stand around and let it happen. But every occasion where Rick has let something crazy escalate into a mess or caused an incredible amount of drama, the root is 90% of the time Rick being apathetic to the potential danger the future could hold. If Rick cared about living, he'd perhaps not deliberately go to places where his very existence was unwelcome. If he cared about living, he wouldn't do things like get drunk while not telling Morty how to disable a neutrino bomb, give dogs the intellect to pull human testicles off, risk dying in a dream, fiddle with an ion defibrillator that had a possibility of killing him...there's atleast one action in every single episode that only happened because Rick doesn't give a fuck. That being said, I do believe Rick is trying to start caring a little more. It's slow, but there's some progress - which is why right now calling him suicidal may not be 100% right. Tl;dr - Rick wouldn't mind dying at all, but it has to be on his own terms. That's all there really is to it.
Otaku-chan I've been wondering why he doesn't just let himself die here when he finds Morty's collar or why he prays for repentance if he's so ready to die. I wanted to understand what those terms are.
Huh, timelines didn't split when Rick was faced with the decision to save or abandon Morty. Didn't even hesitate or second guess the choice when it came down to it.
I think it speaks volume about Rick's character that in different universes, at the same time and almost the same context, one version of him is yelling at Morty for screwing up and the other one is freaking out at the thought of Morty getting hurt and possibly dying, and both are being 100% genuine about it.

The fact that he truly does care about Morty deep down is what saved his life. If that sacrifice wasn't absolutely sincere then it would have meant that there would have been a possibility where rick didn't give Morty his collar meaning they would have been one collar short to fix their timeline. The fact that no such possibility existed shows he truly cares for Morty.
@@SuperMaDBrothers He says that it's possible that there was another possibility with Rick sacrifice and in every possibility he would do it, there was no possibility of him just abandoning Morty.
@@SuperMaDBrothers but reallity was falling apart and every uncertain decision was creating new realities. "Be good Morty, be better than me. If there is a hell, please be merciful." I love how human this is. Every parent wants their kids to be better than them. It's a way we're programmed to try and fix our mistakes. And when Rick accepted death, he also accepted he would never get to heaven. And he accepted God as powerful over him by praying. Not religious at all, I just really like Rick showing humility here.
The critical aspect of "God" in this sequence is that is the antithesis of Rick's philosophy which is Nietzschist, in that there is no purpose of the Universes, it simply exists, and that there is no right and wrong. For this reason, Rick does not have "moral" which are seen as inhibiters for lesser beings. Rick is the smartest person in the world and his greatest flaw is his pride. The greatest fear for Rick is God, not simply due to the possibility of Judgment but also being wrong. The prospect that the universe is not simply a pointless thing with no meaning but may have a cosmic greater purpose is to admit that there are greater intelligences than himself. It also means admitting that he is not completely in control of his own Destiney.
this is that moment when Rick just starts caring about his grand kids. He went and put his life on the line to save Morty. The moment he saw Morty fall he knew he had to save him somehow. So he put his own life on the line just to save him. Rick, you are awesome for saving Morty and if anyone says other, then just beat their ass!
I love Rick. One of the most badass, funny, cynic, iconic cartoon character ever made. But. There's a but. For the sake of simplicity C137Rick = "Our" Rick. So post-Rick Potion. Do you remember evil Morty? The one who controlled that Evil Rick in s01e10 Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind? It's speculated online that originally Evil Morty was C-137Rick's previous Morty, who was abandoned and became Evil Morty. There's a ton of evidence for this, it's just mindblowing. Not actually, it seems is just left there for us to see. 1) In S01E10 Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind we see (at minute seventeen of the episode) how EvilRick (alias Evil Morty) is downloading the contents of Rick's brain. We see that C-137Rick has memories of an infant Morty. How's that possible? We know for a fact that C137Rick appeared in Beth's life after 20 years. Morty is just 14. How is that possible? It means the Morty in the memory is not C-137 Morty. But another one. 2) At the end of the episode (minute twenty) there's Rick and Morty talking about what happened, about the Rickest Rick and the Mortiest Morty, right? Then Rick says "A cocky Morty can lead to some big problems. It can be a real bad thing for everybody. I'll Explain when you're older." .. That's curious. And that's the scene exactly before the revealing of Evil Morty as the mastermind. Rick maybe tought his Morty everything he knows, leading (after a crysis/abandonment/fight) his Morty to become Evil Morty. We don't know how. We don't know why. But we have all the ingredients. In particular the point number 1. There's a couple videos about this on the tube. Check them out. LICK LICK LICK MY BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLS
+Drunken Hobo Well, only 1 64th of the collars were broken. Technically, 100% of Rick cares about Morty, because 100% of the broken collars had that sequence of events. Only if all 64 of the realities had a broken collar the same as the instance we saw, and then 63 Ricks abandoned Morty, THEN you'd be right. IN YOUR FACE, HOBO
+PonzooonTheGreat yea this was what i was looking for, the fact that there was still a single dot means all the Ricks were certain that if Morty was in danger then they would sacrifice themselves to save him.

Whenever it's brought up that Rick only cares about himself, I have to think to this episode. He didn't even save Morty just for camouflage because he has a voucher for a brand new Morty should anything happen. He could've let Morty die and replaced him, but he chose to save him anyway.
well, exept this is the Rick that was begging on his knees after blaming the kid. The other undecided possibility had collapsed and he has no memory of it. Unless the reverse process works by different mechanics then the mess that started it all, it's two different Ricks.
Arriaan Joshi Have you seen the episodes? That Morty is one of infinite Morty’s in the dimensions and timelines. If that Morty was to die, he could just buy a new one at the citadel. It’s true he’s Morty’s grandfather, but that doesn’t mean there’s only one version of them. Just watch the other episodes and you’ll see what I mean.
what was crazy was Rick waited to put his collar after Morty's. If all 64 Ricks put their collars at the same time Morty dies. It makes you think about the show's opening when Rick left Morty behind with those monsters and maybe something like that may have happened before. #EvilMortyTheory
Rick didn’t make a split reality when he chooses to sacrifice his collar for morty. He was completely certain about giving up his life so morty could live

Eh ppl who believe in a god will always jump on the chance to claim a famous nonbeliever (whether fictional or not) as one of their own "seeee he SECRETLY believes. EVERY atheist is like that"
I'm sure Rick would have definitely known it wasn't God but the other Rick still trying to fix the situation, so really he should have been praying for the other Rick to fix his collar.
There must be some unknown, extremely important/meaningful connection between Rick and Morty. When they switched over to another reality where their other selves died, leaving everyone else behind and David Cronenberg'd, Rick was wholly unphased. You'd think it would be simple enough and well within his usual conduct to steal the Morty of another universe if his died, yet he takes only a second to decide to save his grandson's life, at the probable expense of his own.
1:18 I love how in multiple timelines when Rick is faced with death he's actually pleading with God. Soon as he knows he would survive he goes back on it. But its a fun character detail that deep down, Rick thinks its possible, and he wants to account for that, if he has any time where he knows his death is innevitable.
Agnostic isn't a possition on religion but on limited knowledge, he is actually a nihilist which is an atheist but with less concern for morality or peoples feelings and more Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!
Sebastian McIntyre I never said it was a position on religion but it is, since it at least forms an opinion on it. If you haven't noticed yet, Rick is lonely and depressed on the inside, which is why he even says "Wubba lubba dub dub", I think there's a subconscious part of him that wished God exists and that cares deeply for his family although he denies it and keeps a nihilist act up.
Alex Jaegar Being agnostic is a refusal to accept both the existence and nonexistence of any God. I'm pretty sure that's what it is and Rick displays this behaviour even if not accurately to the description.
Deep down, Rick doesn’t want revenge, he just wants redemption. But hell never go out and get it himself because he holds on to his pride far to much so the universe has to force him into a situation where he can be redeemed. In a way it’s tragic how smart he is, he would’ve finally been ‘off the ride’ if he had died in this scene.
Nah he wasn’t revenge, he just never reached it, when he stopped when he realized just how futile it is looking for someone by memory in a sea of finite infinity.
I think the point of Rick's religious moment was just satire relating to the way people turn to religion when they are afraid of death. Religion is a crutch for a lot of people or a billboard of hope when they are in despair.
I agree to a certain extent. I feel like it is satire for both theists and atheists. Most people usually do not directly act as such their religion dictates and when faced with life or death situations, often offer up a bargain of better piety, forgiveness, etc. for a chance at living or a better after-life, only when survived it, typically do not act upon said actions kind of like a giant middle figure to their beliefs, much like how Rick instantly started to swear at God.
Agreed. There are a lot of people out there who claim they don't believe in God but as soon as some shit happens to them suddenly God does exist only to help them or it's "God's fault" and once their lives are back to normal (more or less) its back to "There is no God" or "I helped myself, God doesn't exist" That makes me sad in a sense
+Givemeaminute Although you could take it as Rick keeping in mind that that reality would have a dead rick and morty, leaving behind their whole family. I want to say that in a weird way it makes right what was going to be tragedy for the rest of the family in that reality
+Jodgee ahhh but see, rick genuinely does care about morty and is implied to hate himself as of the season one finale, and he's a lot more complex than msot characters in comedic western animation
It’s so great seeing Rick’s progress over the years, from the Rick who easily abandoned the universe in s1 to the Rick who is now learning to express his love for people again and say sorry.
This moment will forever be the peak of Rick and Morty in my opinion. Because Rick is always 100% certain about things, he would 100% all the time sacrifice himself to save Morty. And like this one quote "peoppe show who they trully are in their last moment", this make the "I'm ok with this, be good Morty, be better than me" trully make Rick one of the best written character, every.
think about this for a second: 1) when rick sacrificed himself, reality didn't split again. he was certain that he'd give up his life for morty 2) rick didn't instantly vanish with summer, so he must've stayed behind intentionally to make sure both morty and summer would leave before him
the second point is exactly it. the certainty vs uncertainty when in the middle, it's his family's life and safety and how he'll do anything to make sure they're safe and sound.
I just realized how much it meant that Rick's sacrifice didn't make another dot. It shows that no matter what, he's completely certain he'd give up his own life in order to save Morty's.

He could have easily saved his skin and gotten a new Morty, but not only does he not put on his collar after realizing his Morty is having issues with his, but he dives in head first to save him.

Well, he is "The Mortyest Morty"
Ryan's Daily Entertainment what if every morty he gets is his mortyest morty?
"Why are doing this for someone who would never do anything for anyone but himself?"
dimb9
Yeah that line made me super pissed off because Rick can be selfless as fuck
The selfless bit is debatable. He's ready to give up his life because he doesn't really care much about living anymore. That being said, if there was a situation where his life was more valuable in some way that another person's, he would abandon them right away. That's just who Rick is.
Otaku-chan rick does care about living, you dont understand his character at all.
a slice of pizza I know Rick hasn't gone ahead and killed himself yet - but that doesn't mean that finding a reason to go on with life as normal isn't hard for him.

The way his tone shifts to be so soft and reassuring when he asks Morty where his collar is is one of the rare moments of showing care from Rick.

@@SuperMaDBrothers but reallity was falling apart and every uncertain decision was creating new realities. Goes to show that Rick isn't a total asshole. and its great that the writers realise this, the fact that he would put his grand childrens lives in front of him despite us as the viewers seeing him as a super intelligent but cruel and condensing piece of shit. Even in comedies, a little character development can attach you to the characters so much more and makes them alot more funny. if the writers decided to keep rick and morty as people the exact same without any real development, it would end up like spongebob and squidwards relationship, boring and predictable.

Rick dancing and talking about it is my favorite gag in the show.
+Despair505 "I'm doing it too" It's like the animators weren't planning on making Summer dance but the voice actress wanted it to happen.
+Snipper Joey Yeah lot of the shows dialouge is improvised. The interdemensional television is entirely improvised.
+991Weeman The inter-dimensional television improvision is ridiculously funny. The way they stutter and sometimes start giggling halfway throughout the shows is gold.
His self sacrifice didn't split that possibility. He was certain that he would sacrifice himself for Morty.
ms. believer if in that possibility Rick had doubts about either saving himself or morty, more possibilities would've been created. When none came, meaning he was always sure about saving morty first.
"Be good Morty, be better than me. If there is a hell, please be merciful."
I love how human this is. Every parent wants their kids to be better than them. It's a way we're programmed to try and fix our mistakes. And when Rick accepted death, he also accepted he would never get to heaven. And he accepted God as powerful over him by praying. Not religious at all, I just really like Rick showing humility here.
Dude, I agree with everything you just said on a spiritual level
I also agree!

I'll Explain when you're older."

It's hilarious how fast he starts praying to God when he thinks he's dying then instantly turns that shit around when he knows he's safe.

He didn't even stutter or hesitate when he said he was fine with it. Wow. It's times like this that make me like the show even more.
U know that ricks mortys grandfather right? And he’s also human. Why tf would he replace Morty ?
I think the golden voucher would become important soon
Arriaan Joshi Have you seen the episodes? That Morty is one of infinite Morty’s in the dimensions and timelines. If that Morty was to die, he could just buy a new one at the citadel. It’s true he’s Morty’s grandfather, but that doesn’t mean there’s only one version of them. Just watch the other episodes and you’ll see what I mean.
PANDAcluTch 88 It doesnt matter he is his only Morty. He replaced everyone but not his Morty

God, I freakin' love this scene. Because you see how much Rick cares about his family. ^w^
you get yo see that in the last episode of season 2 Rick is awesome
alo mtz but he was in prison at the end
No, he just wants the Mulan mcnugget Szechuan sauce, if morty dies, ricks daughter hates him which makes the Szechuan sauce anatainable
Like 10% of him cares about Morty
what was crazy was Rick waited to put his collar after Morty's. If all 64 Ricks put their collars at the same time Morty dies. It makes you think about the show's opening when Rick left Morty behind with those monsters and maybe something like that may have happened before. #EvilMortyTheory
Entire show starys with destruction of world)
A year later I still believe the ''evil Morty'' is Rick's first Morty.
It's just a theory, you don't need to believe it if you don't wanna, and this Rick actually cares for Morty
*o o f*
Rick didn’t make a split reality when he chooses to sacrifice his collar for morty. He was completely certain about giving up his life so morty could live
I could not stop laughing when he yelled "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME MORTY!?"
Lad of velocity you have watched every video on you tube

Atheists in a nutshell lmao.
I love how he was at first like “okay, I accept this.” But then he realised the collar was right there and then he was like “oh shit, nevermind I wanna live!”
Well, there's a difference between accepting the inevitable and accepting the preventable. 😂
I really like how realistic rick is with religion in this type of situation.
Like, I'm an atheist as well, but i immediately start praying when something shit happens to me

@@justanuff Ah fuck off you prick. I personally don't follow any religions but I am up to the idea that an entity or group of entities much higher than us created the Universe. Let people believe what they want to believe. Also before you try to convert me just know that I would never join any religion because there is no proof of any of them.

@@savary5050 I like it how I basically reiterated that it was a joke and I used your own toxic language, but my comment is the one to get removed, nice one youtube or OP.
And that's what's amazing about this show. They can go from a super serious moment that really develops character to a joke in seconds AND make it feel natural.
I expected more comments on Ricks humility. Not
"LOL HE PRAY"
and
"I may be christian but this is FUNNY."
Eh ppl who believe in a god will always jump on the chance to claim a famous nonbeliever (whether fictional or not) as one of their own "seeee he SECRETLY believes. EVERY atheist is like that"
I'm sure Rick would have definitely known it wasn't God but the other Rick still trying to fix the situation, so really he should have been praying for the other Rick to fix his collar.
lmao theres a comment 4 years ago exactly like yours and right below it
Did you mean to say “humanity”?
Odd seeing you here, tell sgt I said hello
There must be some unknown, extremely important/meaningful connection between Rick and Morty. When they switched over to another reality where their other selves died, leaving everyone else behind and David Cronenberg'd, Rick was wholly unphased. You'd think it would be simple enough and well within his usual conduct to steal the Morty of another universe if his died, yet he takes only a second to decide to save his grandson's life, at the probable expense of his own.
With more context, this is so much more heartwarming
What episode is this?
“I never wanna see you again!” “Your never gonna see anything again you little dummy, you killed us”
1:18 I love how in multiple timelines when Rick is faced with death he's actually pleading with God. Soon as he knows he would survive he goes back on it.
But its a fun character detail that deep down, Rick thinks its possible, and he wants to account for that, if he has any time where he knows his death is innevitable.
Rick 's agnosticism is the absolute fucking best 👌
Agnostic isn't a possition on religion but on limited knowledge, he is actually a nihilist which is an atheist but with less concern for morality or peoples feelings and more Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!
Sebastian McIntyre I never said it was a position on religion but it is, since it at least forms an opinion on it. If you haven't noticed yet, Rick is lonely and depressed on the inside, which is why he even says "Wubba lubba dub dub", I think there's a subconscious part of him that wished God exists and that cares deeply for his family although he denies it and keeps a nihilist act up.
Sill, a bit more flat atheist than agnostic.
Alex Jaegar Being agnostic is a refusal to accept both the existence and nonexistence of any God.
I'm pretty sure that's what it is and Rick displays this behaviour even if not accurately to the description.
Alex Jaegar showing my subjective interpretation of a definition makes me "fake intelligent"? Wow, you must be such a buzz kill IRL.
@@ragemaker1202the next episode is gonna be lit. Classic Rick and Morty.
I think the point of Rick's religious moment was just satire relating to the way people turn to religion when they are afraid of death. Religion is a crutch for a lot of people or a billboard of hope when they are in despair.
religion isn't really something I've ever leaned on in times of sadness, I just always thought it seemed more logical
+Crimson Titan either way this was hilarious
+Mr Pickles oh yeah definitely
1:26 that thing on the self. Nice touch.
I love how deep down he still loves and cares for Morty
Notice how no new timelines were made when he sacrificed himself. There was no uncertainty about saving Morty.
Omg I never thought of that
Rick can just get another Morty, though. He has a coupon.
This Rick actually cares about his Morty.
***** Interesting though that this Rick cares enough to constantly save his timeline's Morty but not the rest of his family (Rick Potion #9)
+Jodgee He doesn't want just any Morty, his is the mortiest Morty
"Be good, Morty. Be better than me...."
Awww......
"What the hell, what have you done to me morty!" 😂
I like how Rick when he say's "I'm not okay with this" You can almost hear the Morty impression in him
"im Okay with this , be good Morty... Be better than me "
It’s so great seeing Rick’s progress over the years, from the Rick who easily abandoned the universe in s1 to the Rick who is now learning to express his love for people again and say sorry.
I may be christian but that was hilarious.
I'm catholic and I fucking laughed my ass off
It's actually a very biblical concept. Being in danger and needing God. To getting saved and thinking you did it yourself. I was surprised.
all of the above
Same dawg...

Rick’s transition from “I’m okay with this” to “I am NOT okay with this!” kills me every time! 😆😆😆
"I'm gonna do the cabbage patch dance."
*I'M GONNA DO IT TOO!*
**starts dancing like Rick**
“Why are we doing this for someone who only cares about him self”
This scene was so well done. I love Rick and Morty
I love this scene for two reasons.
1 is the badass labcoat cape on the badass grandpa.
2 is RICK ACTUALLY DOES LOVE MORTY.
"YES, I DID IT!!! THERE IS NO GOD!!!! IN YOUR FACE!!!
*ONE DOOOOOT MOTHERFUCKAAAA!!!!!!!*"
best line imo

I love how he's yelling there is no god but telling him "in your face" just in case there is one. 😂
think about this for a second:
1) when rick sacrificed himself, reality didn't split again. he was certain that he'd give up his life for morty
2) rick didn't instantly vanish with summer, so he must've stayed behind intentionally to make sure both morty and summer would leave before him
the second point is exactly it. the certainty vs uncertainty when in the middle, it's his family's life and safety and how he'll do anything to make sure they're safe and sound.
