- Does oven cleaner really help in removing the aluminum plating. Here is what I did to successfully remove the "chrome plating" off my grille. Let me know if you have tried this before and had different results. I'd say due to the amount of work it takes the myth is BUSTED. 🍻
Great job. I would definitely recommend wearing latex or nitrile gloves when handling / touching any sort of oven cleaner. It's an acid. And while you may not feel it instantly, you will after a few minutes. I would also recommend a respirator. I use muriatic acid for various stuff like this and stripping rust off metal.
I'm so glad i found your vid bro. I thought it was chrome plating so i used purple power and all it did was clean it haha
Do NOT sand the paint coats to combat orange peel. Wet sand only the clear coat. The final clear coat.
Appreciate the tip!
On the grill badge. Drill the eyes out of the ram and wire up a small red led light behind it or 2 small enough to fit in the eyes. (Red led Christmas lights)
Good job. Im thinking of painting my front chrome grill.
My truck is a 2006 Dodge Ram with the Inferno red paint job.
Im going to paint the Grill and front bumper flat black.
Your video is great... Keep on Truckin
Looks so much better. Really nice job.
Appreciate it!
Heat gun always does best for delaminating the chrome from the plastic.
Thanks! I priced a new grill for my '97 because of the peeling, $450!
Nice job. It would be nice to do headlights in black and lower part also.
But did the eazyoff help at all? Looks like you just peeled it...
Great job looks very clean next time use 2k clear they sell it in spray can will give it the oem look
This is the vid i was looking for. My jag xtype grill is peeling was under impression is was chrome. Seeing ur vid its aluminum. Thx for posting will start my project next wknd.
Good luck! Thanks for watching!
Can we just sand down that aluminum plating use self etching primer. Nice coat of paint and clear
Does a heater gun work the same? Or with more effort?
Awesome
Nice. It looks good! I did that on another car I had, It was tedious. I had to peel/sand most of it off. I blacked it out but this time I think I'll try matching the body paint like you did.
Thanks man.
Nice! Wondering if my grille on my audi a4 b8 is aluminium plated too… want to chromedelete
Hey man, what’s the link for those grille inserts? Looks good btw!
They are Grillcraft DOD1007B MX Series. I believe they were discontinued. Amazon no longer has them available. Thanks!

Hey bro. I have a 2014 ram, I used some easy off for the middle emblem to remove old plastic dip. Do you think radiation would mess up? I didn't cover it. I only put tape around the emblem
Nice work. Have same issue with My 2014 F250 Super Duty
I appreciate it!
I wish i would have found out sooner... I'm killing myself with the sender...hopefully it will help even with the bumper
I'd just get the sport bumper cover and paint match it. it will save you a ton of time.
@@j.j.sgarage1457 that shit didn't work bro
Looks good, nice job
Thanks!
That is real chrome. I had to peel the whole thing using a razor blade to lift the chrome. I would never do it again. If you want to save money and have alot of free time then yeah peeled it. You can buy a new black grill on Amazon for under $200. Also the aluminum plating will come off by just soaking it in water for a long time.
Looks good man!
Thanks for watching!
Looks like peeling in big strip’s compared mine little at a time
Lol I did the same thing took 8 hours to remove the aluminum plating. I put raptor bed liner on mine 😁 hopefully I'll never half to do that again, If so I'll just buy a new grill. 😅
If the grill cost a whole lot I would recommend it. If it's under $200 to buy another grill, I would just buy another grill
Came out nice!
Appreciate it!
LOOKS GREAT!!! What grit sandpaper did you use to wet sand it with. Going to do this to my 04 Dodge 2500
1000 grit. Thanks for watching.
I will try it out
Um, The chemicals don't penetrate the aluminum to release it from the plastic bond
A pain to remove. I used heat gun. End up destroying a part of it. I will need to put bondo on it.
What did you sanded it off with?
Trying to do this on my 2000 Dakota grill right now as a test piece. The oven cleaner is doing nothing, just dried to a crusty white coat.
Same here
If it’s stuck good, just scuff it and use an adhesion promoter and etching primer.
Hey what did you end up doing
@@medrawz338 I never got the chrome off, tried Oven cleaner again and then put the grill in a garbage bag in the sun, no luck. Pressure washer is working on my town car though.
What sandpaper grit did you use before priming it? and then what grit did you use for the wet sanding? Big thanks love the video!
I believe it was 200 then 1000 for wet. thanks for watching!
Good job man looks real good
Thanks bro!
Did the heavy duty oven cleaner make this a lot easier? I have the fume free stuff but still fighting quite a bit. Debating going to pick some up, working on my grill now
IMO I don’t think it made enough difference to go out of your way and get it. I let mine sit for a few hours and was still fighting a bit. It is a very tedious process. I hope it works out for you.
Damn thats nice where did u get those grill inserts?
Amazon. They are no longer available tho...
I watched this video did the same and really works! Now looks badass! Thank you man
Is easier when you use a water gun pistol to rip off the chrome whit the water pressure after the EasyOff make the aluminum paint pops up
I’m glad everything worked out for you!
Wow looks good where did you get the inserts at thanks
Thanks man! I picked them up on Amazon. Grillcraft DOD1007B mx series. I believe they were discontinued :(
@@j.j.sgarage1457 sweet thanks yeah looks way better painted bad ass

Frickin sick!!..👍🏽..Aloha 🤙🏽...
cheers! 🤙🏽
Is this the same color as the 2007 dodge durango mineral grey
yes mineral gray metallic code I used was PDM.
What grit did you use for your wet sand
Depends on how much “orange peel” you have. I’d typically start with 1000grit.
How about the chrome on the actual grill inserts
Not sure. I feel like those would be more of a pain. I’d just replace them.
where did you get the panels
Amazon but they were discontinued a while ago :(
Can I do that same for my 07 dodge durango I'm tryna make something that no one else has my own custom one
I dont see why not. Give it a shot and let me know how it worked out for you! 👍🏽
Kewl, man
How
If this is aluminum plating why is that not in the title of this video?
Because is what everyone calls it. Apologies for the confusion. I appreciate your criticism.
Looks Bad Ass
Thank you for watching Scott!
The oven cleaner does nothing. My experience is nothing takes off the chrome other than taking several hours peeling it of. I mean several hours
Deadass going to the store rn. Have a 4 gen with that ugly ass chrome smh
Update: that shit ain’t work smh
Sorry to hear that man. From what I’ve heard I was expecting it to wipe right off and that was not the case. I think mine being older helped the situation.
J.J.’s Garage yeh I bought a new grill no worries lol
@@SosaGamer shit shit shit!! I'm looking at this while waiting with this stuff on my grill !
Bleach would've removed that paint easier! All within 10mins
Bleach would take days if it worked at all... just watched a video last night where a guy ruined his bumper. If you haven’t heard by now, ZEP purple
Theirs a big misconception that bleach and other chemicals will remove the aluminum plating on a grill. The plating on the grill isnt the same as the aluminum on a headlight bezel. The grill plating is like a wrap and is simply too thick for any DIY chemical and would need a lengthy acid bath in a 50 gallon drum to remove it at all.
I guess it depends on how you do it, ruclips.net/video/CDF3A3xUYeY/видео.html, this guy used bleach, yeah it does take days. Also worth a read in the comments, could be you need to look for the right chemical in the oven cleaner.
