    BAEGU (SOLOMON ISLANDS):
Sasi sasi o to aro aro
O angi si nau boroi amu
Ni ma oe e fasi korona
Dolali dasa na, lao dai afuimae
Afuta guau mauri, Afuta wela inomae
Sasi sasi ae o angisi nau
Boroi nima oe e fasi koro na
Dolali dasa na, lao dai afuimae
Afuta guau mauri, Afuta wela inomae
    ENGLISH INTERPRETATION
Young brother, young brother you be quiet
Although you are crying to me
    Your father has left us
He has gone to the place of the dead
Protect the head of the living, Protect the orphan child
Young brother, young brother hey? Although you are crying to me
    Your father has left us
He has gone to the place of the dead
Protect the head of the living, protect the orphan child.
At the core of Sweet Lullaby is the voice and melody of Afunakwa from the Solomon Islands who comes from the island of Malaita (Fataleka). Her singing was recorded in 1969 by ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp in an effort to archive the traditions of a fading culture. This interpretation and lyrics come a translation by her grandchildren. The song is said to be very old and hence the new generation does not understand every word. The song is about a young child crying because he does not see his father with the family. In response his elder sister sung this song to comfort as well as tell him the reality, with an appeal for their deceased father to protect this child in the land of the living (local ancient belief is that the dead care for loved ones they left behind). The old woman also said that the sample, if listened to carefully, used some words and sounds that were added to make it sound more melo. Expression of some words twice, as well pronounciation of most of the words are different from that of normal conversation. Eg. ‘O’ should be OE’, Angiangi should be angisi. This is very common with local traditional songs.
Thanks to the people of the Solomon Islands for the lyrics, translation, and interpretation.

When i listen to this song i imagine night sky, big fireplace and people dancing in a circle holding each other hands in somekinda magical island, no hate, no jealousy, only love and caring. Material things come and go , true friendship lasts forever, respect nature and each other. Peace to you all :))

Thank you SO much for posting this. I heard the original version of this on Gaia Radio this morning (first time in 15 years,) and just had to find out the title and artist. After 4 hours of Googling, etc, I came upon this by chance. I LOVE this song still. It sends a chill down my spine still, all these years later.

I gotta thank my brother for allowing me to appreciate this type of music. Before I only listened to mainstream and would laugh at something like this, now it seems to be the other way around

I can't remember exactly how many times I have listened to this music. If I remember correctly, it was the year 1992 when I was a grad student at IIT-Bombay and one of my friends who happens to be a music lover was playing this music in his room and to say in a word I was simply "spellbound". It opened my eyes in the world of "music". Although its a sad music but I can't stop listening to this music and I feel like I want to live in this beautiful world forever.

The melody clears my mind, but the meaning makes my soul crying...
    "
Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place..." (english translation)

I am reminded of driving my huge four wheel drive while burning fossil fuel with a 450 hp V8 up and down highway 17 listening to this tape, yes tape, full blast...just driving and listening. I loved the music, but missed the message. Ah, to be a teenager for me was blissfully unaware, oxymoronic bliss. I killed some trees with that truck which I would now drive off a cliff...in an environmentally friendly way.

This is a very valid point, and it is an understandable problem. But it's more of a problem with society than this particular piece. Because this is not the first time this has happened.
Nor will it be the last.

in 2012, the maya calendar will end as they made it, but we have computers that exactly calculate from that point, the maya's did calculate that the time would change cause of the moon being some further away (few miles), and therefore changing the calendar... so much for, the end of time and days, its just a minor shift in calculations :)

I really want to listen to this song Deep into the madagascan or Amazon rainforest...lying there on a giant leaf with rain trickling on my face, smelling the strange aroma's that fill the jungle air, whilst strange exotic creatures slowly cum out to greet me with a curious but harmless approach; checking who this new eccentric creature is, who warms their territory. ( picture this scene with a setting almost like Avatars Pandora forest whilst at night with its bioluminescent lights)

Im thinking about starting a stage performance with this deep forest music as the theme,(this song and songs like this song) Plot: a boy falling right down deep into the cracks and crevices of the earth deep into a big sinkhole or something, and then meeting strange weird eccentric creatures, unknown to man because he has fallen sooo deep into the jungle where all these untouched strange troglobite creatures are living in the DEEP FOREST with there adapted bioluminescent patterned bodies.
