I have this shovel and have dug out some shrubs. It absolutely works and dramatically cuts back the time it takes compared to regular spade type shovel.

look into a B'root Bar root cutting tool. It's for cutting large roots not finger size. It's a heavy tool, just under 20 lbs but that it what forces the blade through the roots.

I use that root slayer for digging plugs metal detecting. It’s heavy but it’s a tough ass slayer !
