it was a big dumb Kaijuu action movie, and it delivered on that while being fun and hitting some notes of sadness. Sooo, I'd say it did a good job.

I'm pretty sure that Samuel L Jackson's character does have a reason to go straight from Nam to Skull Island. They seemed to be setting up that he was some kinda war lover, and that he was sad that he would have to go back home after the war ended. But yeah, I'm not a film critic in any way so I might have perceived that wrongly :L

As you normally don't review movies, i'd like to suggest some ways to improve. Through out the video I sorta feel a 'disconnect' with the points your making. The way you list your points doesnt really sound coherient. You sorta just go from one point to the next without it really connecting to each other, or a bigger arguement. For example you talk about the poorly setup plot (the assumption with the russians) then just go strait to the poorly written characters. What you could've done instead is the begining of thr video mention how the film makes you feel "however you feel about it" then when you mention the poor plot, relate it to why it made you feel that way. I hope this comment makes some sense. Anyway, apart from that your points are certainly valid and I enjoyed the video! Keep it up!

Tbh I don't think the movie wasn't so much a mess but rather just a strange movie. It's like even though it went through different writers and it shows, it doesn't seem like a mess, just a very multilayered movie. You could just enjoy it in many ways. I think it's pretty neat, not perfect but very original depiction of King Kong, and that story being introduce into this short of monsterverse. Let's see what happens, so far so good.

I'd say the film was good, not amazing or anything, but good. Being the 2nd outing in the monsterverse I'd say it does a lot better than its predecessor Godzilla(2014).
One place where Kong shines over Godzilla is the character. Godzilla only had 2 interesting and likable characters, Watanabe and Bryan Cranston, whereas kong had quite a few that I enjoyed.
The second thing Kong does better is it cinematography. Godzilla had some nice shots and angles, but the majority are in night and are completely ruined by that- for example: the bluray version is so darkened you miss a massive amount of detail on night scenes. Kong also has the touch of changing perspectives from third to first.
As for Samuel Jackson's character they made it clear he went because he didn't know what to do in life outside of war, which is seen through his very first scene in the office. As for the mission he didn't force his men into it, they were asked if they were up for another one- in which of course they all agree to.
At the end it's a good movie that's better than the opening movie to the monsterverse.

      @evertuyandvidya 7 лет назад

Godzilla was a large disappointment and they understood that when they made this movie, except for the screenwriters. Godzilla was a serious-drama action monster movie while Kong like to be a comedic-monster movie, taking no notes from Kong (2005) or the 70's film. The next Godzilla movie will be a better movie, for the fact that they WILL show more Godzilla.

esponge16 This movie had me laughing out loud and getting my adrenaline pumping at the same time in certain scenes. I haven't had a movie do that to me for a long time and I had a novel experience. Sam Jackson's "Ahab" character was a joy to watch as well. I was rooting for him for quite awhile, sort of man vs monster deal. The one thing I really enjoyed was that I couldn't predict what was going to happen at the movie at any time, it threw gut punches at you the whole time, which makes a movie that much more enjoyable, the unpredictability.

Let's pray for your channel then. But you hit the nail on the head with the tonal consistencies with the movie, I couldn't get it out of my head after listening to the dialogue and a few of the scenes. But I thought this movie was fantastic and easily my favorite cinema experience in 2015 and 2016, and the set up for the monster-verse at the end had me quite excited as well. (End of the credits). I didn't know what to think when I saw Tencent's logo pop up first thing and it scared me, but it turned out better than expected in the end. China is probably attempting to make an impact in Hollywood as the inverse is happening as you pointed out, Hollywood into China.

I liked this movie. It did its job as a reboot and finally shed the majority of the King Kong story. As iconic as it is, the original stories were very pulpy and sexualized. I felt some of the weird choices that you pointed out when I first started the movie. Honestly it was difficult in the beginning not to think of Samuel L Jackson as anyone but Nick Fury. My impression of his original motive was that he was one of those people who are okay with being in war.

I liked the film a lot and if they can make the Monster-Verse work then I'm excited for what's to come. I felt that it was a step up from Godzilla, because we barely got to see Godzilla in the movie, but in Kong, they had Kong on screen a lot of the time, and even for stupid scenes like where he killed that Kraken. It was great and not important to the story, but just something to look at.

I personally really loved the movie, especially all the monster stuff, it was awesome. The only human characters I like was Sam Jackson and the dude who stranded there. The other characters was pretty much there to be killed and as eye candy, I guess - but they really need to use less time on human characters in these movies and use more time on the monster.

I dunno, I sort of understood the reasoning behind 'don't let the Russians get there first!' I mean...that's how the whole space program got started? That's pretty much the Cold War, don't let the other side do this one thing first!
Wow four writers? This movie is pretty damn good. It feels weird, good weird I mean. It's a big fun monster movie. This is what Transformers should be. No one pisses me off, people are cool, I can tell what happens during the action. Oh yeah it isn't perfect but...I had fun with this film. It's what I want in a monster action movie.
Also it's a shin-gunto sword not a katana. Getting that sword information wrong really took me out of the review.

I really enjoyed the film, and actually liked it's homage to all the Vietnam films and it's attempts at comedy. I can see how both of those could be detrimental to other viewers, but I thought they gave the film a lot of character. Regarding Hiddelson and Larson, one thing you have to accept about monster movies is that the actual star is always the size of a skyscraper and the human characters are just there to keep the plot moving as opposed to being fully developed or super relatable characters. That's probably the biggest reason why people either love monster movies (like me) or hate them, and it's a chocolate and vanilla kind of thing. There's no "right" answer, instead it's a matter of personal preference. The only point I thought was truly bogus was the point at the beginning about the Russians. Cold War paranoia was one of the biggest driving forces behind the later half of the twentieth century, and the Americans would have spent a billion dollars fishing a beer can out of the pacific if they thought the Soviets might have any interest in it at all or if they could use it for propaganda purposes and vice versa. As such, having people do something just so Washington could say they did it before Moscow isn't a reach at all, in fact it's basically a writer's "easy button" for any story set between 1945 and 1991. Low effort, for sure, but it still works.
Though the scene with Samurai Loki cutting through pterodactyls in poison gas like he was playing prehistoric jungle Dark Souls was honestly one of the dumbest things I've ever seen lol.

I find myself in total agreement, this movie was a mess that did indeed feel like it was about 4 different visions all vying for control, and with no clear direction. The gas mask scene was indeed ridiculous, I'm glad someone else noticed that!
What's most disappointing for me is that I would enjoy a silly B-movie about Kong fighting weird beasts, but we didn't even really get that. The movie trys so hard to be more than this, yet anyone I've seen commenting that they enjoyed it clearly just did so for the monster fights. And yet we have to package it all up inside something with artistic aspirations that are just never going to be fulfilled.
But ultimately this kind of half assed crap will still be churned out, because everything now has to be part of some connected universe that tie into a bunch of other stuff, and the general viewing public seem to lose all sense of critical appreciation provided there's a post credit teaser to get hyped about.
On which note, the post credit scene for this was probably the dumbest, most jarring part of the whole movie. If you were wondering where Hiddleston and Larsson's characters had any purpose, it's seemingly this scene, yet the whole thing was laughable.
Oh well, there still the Universal new monsterverse to look forward to (except have you seen that trailer for the new Mummy? What the actual feck!!)

I liked it, but I can see what you mean. All of your complaints are justified. I liked it because it felt a like B monster movie like the 70s and 80s. Not only that, but I love Vietnam War movies, so I loved the time period. In general, the movie was weird. John C Reilly was funny, but he felt out of place. He was cracking jokes, even though, he has been on this island for decades and is seeing humans like him for the first time. He also spoke English with the natives, so he never learned their language (mind you, he has been on the island forever). Most likely, the writers didn't want to invent a new language for the natives, so they just had the natives blankly stared at everyone and nod.
The script was so lazily written. I am sick of lazy ass shitty scripts written by 10 people that are trying appeal to every human. If Samuel L Jackson and John Goodman weren't in this, then it would've been a piece of shit
