    I don't think people understand that Tidus' laughing scene is supposed to sound forced. He's not legitimately laughing. You can hear his legitimate laugh at the end of their scene. Sure, it's a very awkward scene, but I think people just think that THAT is is actual laugh.

    • @MRGilD0

      It was pretty mediocre forced or not. I doubt people think that's his actual laugh. They just hate it either way and for good reason.

      Considering how it's become a meme, people see the laugh and take it without context, which is why it's misunderstood

      The problem was not her voice. Her voice was great. It's her cadence, cause she kept speaking and pausing to match the JP voice lips. People (me included) think it's jarring and unnatural.

      Another funny difference is that Auron is much more rough and strict in the Japanese version.
      In the English translation he feels a lot like a wise and caring mentor who is there for the party at all times, but in the Japanese version he is more like "mind your own business" and never even attempts to sound polite in any way - even when they speak to Seymour in Guadosalam his speech pattern is like "yo, make this short, we want to leave!". xD

    • @JuicyLeek
      @JuicyLeek 10 лет назад +3

      Laurelindo I didn't know that, so thank you! Is there a compilation of all the Final Fantasy X cinematics in Japanese with English subtitles?

      Things are changed in English mostly because things that could be acceptable in Japan, are not necessarily accepted in America. What they change in translation doesn't actually alter the storyline, it's more to keep the general public unoffended.

    • @m.m.2341
      @m.m.2341 4 года назад +4

      The German version of the game is translated straight from the Japanese version, instead of butchering the English version further. They went the "Thank you" route ... But of course there is no German dub, so it was weird as hell with the English dub playing :D

      For Auron, kimari and Lulu I definitely prefer the English version. I'm not any kind of expert in Japanese, but in English they sound unique whereas in Japanese Auron and Kimari kinda sound the same while lulu just sounds like an NPC (I guess)

    • @MaidenLoaf
      @MaidenLoaf 5 лет назад +10

      @@luizfernandodonascimento3413 I think that's just because you aren't used to Japanese. I speak Japanese (studied for like 10 years and lived there for 1), and I played through this in the Japanese language version. For me the Japanese voices have wayyy more character. By the same token, I feel like I'd not see the differences as much if they were in, say, Korean, or Hindi.
      The characters feel different in Japanese, as well. Lulu feels much kinder to me in the Japanese version, even if she has a sharp tongue, for example. Rikku was always my favourite in the Japanese version - the way she speaks is reminiscent of naivete and a sort of young innocence, over-confidence, and brashness - which is fitting given she's quite young. Adds a funny dynamic to the interactions.
      To provide an example, Lulu doesn't say "You truly are clueless" as she does in the English version - it makes her sound like she's looking down a lot on Tidus. In Japanese she says "It's not that you've forgotten... It's as if you genuinely don't know." Has a really different feel to it, and is far more respectful. She also comes across as a lot more distressed in the cavern of the stolen fayth, from memory (been a while since I saw that scene in English).
      I love both performances, but yeah, I guess it comes down to preference and whether or not you know the language.

    You know what? I like both dubs equally. While some actors suggest slightly different interpretations in their corresponding characters, all of them are plausible (e.g. Japanese Lulu being a little warmer than English Lulu, English Tidus being more "average teenage boy" vs. confidently outgoing Japanese Tidus, etc.). While I am biased towards the English dub, I bet the Japanese might prefer their own dub as well, simply because they're more familiar with its nuances. Kudos to the VA teams!

  • @gomiakayo
    @gomiakayo 6 лет назад +3

    I think the characters were all cast pretty well in English, but it's often the timing or other things that make it fall apart in places. Whether this was cause of questionable director choices or something else, we can't know.
    English Tidus sounds fine in scene where he's saying a lot, but any time he's reacting to stuff happening in a scene, like random "whoa"s or "ouch"es, he just sounds ridiculous. I think it plays a big part in why some people find him so annoying. Some translation choices didn't help either, like deciding to translate "hara hetaaaaa" directly to "HUNGRYYYYY" lmao. Right before Rikku gives him food on the boat. Nobody does that in English; they'd go "ugh... so hungry..." or something. So it like doubles his childish obnoxiousness at times
    Yuna's English VA is really soft-spoken, but it mostly fits the character. The problem though is that there are some serious awkward pauses she does mid-sentence very often that don't exist at all in the Japanese. Idk if they were trying to match cutscene timing, but even though the game struggles with that in general, the other characters don't really have this problem.
    Lulu and Wakka are great. Lulu's are matched like a dream, and they did a great job keeping the feel of Wakka's accent in English. He's a little much in both versions lol.
    Rikku is good, too. I was surprised that her name in Japanese is somewhat different since Rikku already sounds Japanese, but it doesn't matter.
    It's hard to translate her kind of bubbliness into English without it being really cringy. Tara Strong does a great job, though. (as usual)
    Auron: The only big difference imo. But a good choice, because his strictness wouldn't go over as well here. I like it a lot.
    Kimahri: Don't think Kimahri's voice really matters since the whole point is he doesn't bother emoting. Both are fine.
    The issues with Tidus and Yuna are my main problems, and honestly, I think it was probably the director not choosing good takes. It happens with the other characters, too. The fact that they do a great job when they're doing longer segments makes it especially apparent imo.
    I'd like the English a lot more if that wasn't the case.
    ---
    Oh, and before I forget, the most important character of all:
    O'aka XXIII, merchant extraordinaire!:
    100x better in English. Can't compare.

    Really good video here. The voice acting in FFX is good, I just don't like it when Tidus shouts. He has a cool voice when he speaks in a normal tone. I loved what you did at the end of this video by the way!

    Bearing in mind I grew up with the English version...
    Tidus: Japanese (overall - tough to call)
    Yuna: Japanese (sounds more believably human, and less stilted)
    Auron: English (all day every day!)
    Wakka: English
    Lulu: Japanese
    Kimahri: English
    Rikku: English

    anime show-like casting in the japan's version is a bit behind the international version cuz of the graphics improvement when it gets this realistic.

    I always thought that about Auron's Japanese voice as well.
    He has a more merciless 100% raw sound in that version, while his English voice is more understanding and comforting.

    My preferences:
    Tidus: Definitely Japanese, that voice suits him better and sounds more his age somehow. I also think ENG VA's accent is way too strong.
    Yuna: English. They gave her a lot of layers in the dub version that I find missing in undub.
    Auron: Definitely English. He sounds tough, but still warm, like that strict father who's trying to lead you through the right but hard path. In JP he just sounds like the usual deep-voiced lone wolf that's present in every anime and FF game.
    Wakka: English VA has got a lot of character. JP sounds more generic to me.
    Lulu: English, same as above. A deeper voice suits the character much more. She sounds like a generic anime girl in JP.
    Kimahri: Both. They sound very different, but I think both suit the character.
    Rikku: Overall I like both, but she sounds much more emotional in ENG during the Home scene, I also love how she refers to Yuna as Yuny which I think it's missing in the JP version.

    Tidus his English voice is better to me, the Japanese one has its charm, but I just like the english more, to me its more realistic.. more youthful. Auron his English one is jsut magnificent and I prefer it over.. whatever. Wakka his Japanese one is SO COOL. It really fits Wakka, so does the English one by the way. Lulu her japanese voice sounds very wise. I like them both.
    And I think Rikku's speaks for itself. Perfect.

    God it's incredible to actually see the mouths sync up. I know it's impressive that they even managed to have mouths move accordingly to the voices back then but I can't say it didn't ever bother me how badly it was synced because they obviously didn't sync it up for English. It seems a lot of the time they tried to write the script around the lip movements to make it less inaccurate but most of the time it still looks awkward. At least they did way better in FFXII.

  • @Peter_1986
    @Peter_1986 12 лет назад

    @nomiverly That wasn't even supposed to be a real laugh anyway, it was just a desperate attempt by Tidus and Yuna to cheer each other up during their dark and burdening journey, and fake laughter will obviously sound terrible. =P

  • @Turnajon

    I honestly don't find anything bad about the voice acting in this game, honestly. It was handled by Jack Fletcher, the guy who did some of my favorite dubs of all time, CASTLE IN THE SKY, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, PRINCESS MONONOKE, and VAMPIRE HUNTER D -- all solid to excellent dubs. The only issue I have is that the lip-sync is kinda iffy and there are some lines that sound that they were TCE'd, (Time Compression Expanded), but I have no problems with the voices or the acting. I actually met James Arnold Taylor at AnimeNEXT a long time ago, I thought he seemed like a real sweet guy. I honestly didn't hear his Tidus at the time, but doing so now, I do feel bad for the guy getting so much flak; he really does a pretty good job. If he says the laughing scene was deliberately faked, then that's what it is.

    Yuna- Jap, definitely. The performance was more naturalistic and nuanced. The English version, while not exactly bad, sounded to forced and breathy.
    Rikku- English. They both convey Rikku's char, but the English one was so well done.
    Auron- tie.
    Lulu- both good, but English. I think the deeper voice sounds more mature and sultry.
    Tidus- while I suppose the English version better conveys his hyper bubbly nature , the Jap actor sounded like a normal guy. The English one was a lil OTT.

    Tidus: Japanese (gaahhh keep to ratchet James)
    Yuna: meh English, awkward in Japanese
    Auron: English, sounds amazingly badass
    Wakka: English (accent is baddassery)
    Lulu: Both sound.......the same! either way it's fine
    Kimahri: English, creepy dark voice
    Rikku: Either really

    My opinions:
    Tidus: English (Masakazu is awesome as well though, especially in the Vocal Collection. o.0)
    Yuna: Both
    Auron: Both are really good for the character but I LOVE Matt's voice. So I guess in a way, kind of prefer him in English. Xd
    Wakka: English
    Lulu: Both. Paula has a bit more of the intellectual tone but Rio I feel adds more femeninity.
    Kimahri: English
    Rikku: Both. Tara and Marika are so cute! XD

    This might be biased, but I like to understand what I hear.
    In all seriousness, here are my choices for each character:
    Tidus = English. I like both, but the fact that Arnold did such a great job with KH 2's Jack Sparrow wins him this, easily.
    Yuna = Tie.
    Auron = Eng. Fits so well with his character.
    Wakka = Eng. More tropical, like his character.
    Lulu = Tie.
    Kimahri = Eng. Sounds more "beastly".
    Rikku = Eng. Too cute.
    I'll admit I burst out laughing when I heard Jap Tidus' laugh scene!!!

    Huh, Auron's Japanese VA is the only one that throws me off. Love Itachi/Ukitake but it doesn't match him, imo

    I always thought that this game had fairly good voice acting, anyway. The biggest stumbling block is the lip syncing. Japanese have the advantage there as the scenes were created alongside the voiced dialogue.

    I prefer the English version of Auron. he just speaks too fast in japaneese to sound calm and composed which is what I really like about Auron, of course that is not the fault of the Japanese actor as the Japanese language just sounds really fast.

    Tidus: Japanese sounds incredibly good with this one. Personally, his English voice annoyed me a bit.
    Yuna: Personally, I think her English voice is awesome, I adore it to the fullest.
    Auron: I think his English voice suits better. It just sounds like... Auron! The japanese voice was just a regular masculine voice.
    Wakka: Even though people will hit me for that, I still prefer Wakka's English voice. His accent suits his character perfectly.
    Lulu: Wow! Honestly, the English voice actor did a fantastic job! I love her voice, it may be my favourite voice out of all.
    Kimahri: Even though his terrible grammar in the English voice acting was completely unnecessary, I still think that English wins this match. It has that kind of mysterious sound in the voice actor's voice, which is totally fitting.
    Rikku: Definitely Japanese. Her English voice is admittedly good, but in my opinion her Japanese voice is even better.
    Results: The English voice acting wins over the Japanese one, which doesn't mean that the Japanese voice acting is bad. The English voice acting, in many ways, just sounds way better, even though Tidus' voice wasn't the best.

    If they ever remake this for PS3, for the love of GOD do what Atlus did with "Catherine" and edit the lip movements in the CG scenes with better match the english voices.
    Most of the time (at least for me) while playing the english dub it sounded like the characters had speech impediments, as the english voice actors had to either speak faster or slower than normal (sometimes in the same damn sentence) in order to fit the mouth movements of the CG vids.
