I think that correct positioning of the bridge is quite important to achieve the correct intonation. It is the same with a guitar or bass guitar when you adjust the saddles. I guess it is not quite so important with a violin as it is not a fretted instrument and pitch adjustment can more easily be made dynamically with the fingering while playing. Rosin (resin) should be applied to the the bow hair so that there is friction when drawing the bow across the strings. It is this that sets up the vibration and makes the sound. Sometimes the strings are plucked with the finger. This is called 'pizzicato'.
I would say that learning to play violin, or even to set up the instrument, is quite difficult without tuition.

The thing with violin... only the high prices models sounds good. The bottom tier sometimes is just a piece of wood with strings. Well just like a saxophone. Been there myself.

The yellow thing you have there is resin. You smear that on the horse hair so it has an attack on the string.

Hi Miss Juna, Congratulations on getting a violin. First thing to do is to take it to a luthier (a person who specializes in building and repairing violins) and have him set up the instrument for you. There is a lot to do to set up a violin properly. The bridge (the thin wooden piece that holds the strings) must be placed properly between the F-holes (the opening in the top of the violin) and in the correct position in relation to the sound post (a wooden rod inside the violin that fits between the top of the violin and the back on the violin). The sound post will probably need to be adjusted or replaced for the best sound quality. The pegs (the black things the strings attach to) will need to be properly fitted so that they will turn so you can tune the instrument but also stay in place so the string tension doesn't cause them to slip. The strings may need to be replaced depending on the quality that came with the violin. The luthier will tell you. Hope you are able to find someone to help you with all this.
I am not a violinist, but are violins also made with geared tuners similar to those found in modern guitars/bass guitars, or do they just come with those traditional friction tuning pegs. These have always seemed to me to be a quite unreliable way of tuning an instrument. Perhaps the extra weight of geared tuners would upset the balance and resonance of such a small and lightweight instrument as a violin.
@@Bogallan there are geared tuners for violins, but they are rare. They require special fitting and can be difficult to install. For a violin, in my opinion, it is not necessary. Properly fitted pegs with Hill's peg paste and the strings properly wound on the pegs are easy to tune and quite reliable in holding the string and not slipping.
@@weldonwilson Well, I guess they've been made that way for centuries, so they've had plenty of time to decide that's the best way to do it.

Awesome Juna! I'm pretty excited that you decided to try the violin! My favorite violinist of all time is Don "Sugarcane" Harris! He played with Frank Zappa and also had a solo career! If you get a chance, check him out on the Hot Rats album from 1969, in a song called; Willie The Pimp! His solo is after the lead solo. Oh, and the bassline is fantastic by the way!
